Due to ongoing instability in the real estate market, many people that might at one time have bought homes as young adults are choosing to forgo such purchases in favor of living in rented accommodations.

(A) that might at one time have bought homes as young adults
This choice has the relative pronoun "that" which does not refer to people correctly. The correct relative pronoun for referring to people is "who."

(B) that as young adults might once have bought homes
same as A

(C) who might once have bought homes in young adulthood
This choice uses "in young adulthood," which is not equivalent to "when they were young adults" in meaning. Additionally, the placement of "in young adulthood" is awkward in this context.

(D) who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes
This choice has a similar issue as choice (C) with the awkward placement of "in young adulthood." Moreover, "might have at one time bought homes" is less concise compared to the correct answer choice.

(E) who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought homes
Fixes all the issues. It's correct!

My Answer: C

Option A, B: Between that and who, who is a better choice when referring to people. Hence, A and B are eliminated.

Option C: Can't find anything wrong with this option. might once have bought homes in young adulthood conveys the correct meaning and who is used to refer to people.

Option D: in young adulthood at one time seems redundant and doesn't convey the intended meaning.

Option E: Same as D and also very wordy and awkward.

I don't have much explanation but lets go through the options
(A) that might at one time have bought homes as young adults => looks good that can refer to people, as is used to show role
(B) that as young adults might once have bought homes => Not good
(C) who might once have bought homes in young adulthood => young adulthood really?
(D) who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes => same as above
(E) who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought homes => who, when not right

IMO, the answer should be C

(A) that might at one time have bought homes as young adults

'that' should not be used with people

(B) that as young adults might once have bought homes

'that' should not be used with people

(C) who might once have bought homes in young adulthood

clear and with no mistakes.

(D) who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes

contender, but not as concise as D

(E) who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought homes

awkward

C uses the preferred relative pronoun, who, to refer to many people.
"might at one time" and "might once" both are correct. But "once" is precise as compared to "at one time". So, "once" is preferred.
formal and logical parallelism in the wording of the relative clause and the main clause: first, adverbs( once and now),

A and B: Incorrect because "people" need to be followed by "who", not "that"
C: Incorrect; "in young adulthood" sounds awkward. Sounds like they are buying a home in a place called young adulthood
D: Correct; No grammatical error here
E: Incorrect; Changes the intended meaning of the sentence and also kind of makes it nonsensical. "when they were young adults" implies a time in the past and "might at one time have bought homes" implies a hypothetical time period.

So, IMO, answer is B

'That' refers to inanimate objects and 'who' refers to people. As the sentence refers to people, one can eliminate options A and B.

(C) who might once have bought homes in young adulthood
Conveys the correct meaning in the most concise manner.

(D) who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes
This refers literally to people who may have bought houses when they were young adults. The sentence wants to compare young adults in the past to young adults currently. Also 'once' is preferable to 'one time' both for meaning and conciseness

(E) who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought homes
Same issues as above.

Answer C

Who is a relative pronoun that’s used to refer to a person previously mentioned in a sentence and verb will be used after that as per the antecedent, which is "people" in this case.

Let's evaluate the options:

(A) The use of "that" is incorrect when referring to people. We should use "who". (eliminate)

(B) Again, the use of "that" is incorrect. We should use "who" when referring to people. (eliminate)

(C) This option is concise and uses the correct pronoun ("who"). There are no other errors (let's keep this)

(D) "who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes" - This is grammatically correct, but it is wordy. (let's keep it for now)

(E) "who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought home" - This seems to be grammatically correct as well, but it is even more wordy and awkward. so, (eliminate)

Between C and D, C is more concise.
I will go with C.

(A) that might at one time have bought homes as young adults
Explanation: This option uses the correct relative pronoun "that" to refer to "people." The phrase "at one time have bought homes as young adults" is grammatically correct and conveys the intended meaning.

(B) that as young adults might once have bought homes
Explanation: This option changes the original meaning by placing the phrase "as young adults" after "that" instead of before "have bought homes." The original sentence implies that they might have bought homes when they were young adults, not necessarily that they are young adults at the moment.

(C) who might once have bought homes in young adulthood
Explanation: This option changes the meaning slightly by using "in young adulthood" instead of "as young adults." While the change in meaning is not significant, the original phrase "as young adults" is more concise and idiomatic.

(D) who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes
Explanation: This option changes the word order of the original sentence, which affects the clarity and flow. The phrase "in young adulthood" is less common and natural compared to "as young adults."

(E) who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought homes
Explanation: This option is wordy and redundant. The phrase "when they were young adults" is unnecessarily long, as it is already implied by "young adults." Additionally, "at one time" and "once" are redundant and add unnecessary complexity to the sentence.

A is the Correct Option

(A) that might at one time have bought homes as young adults
Incorrect. That is not used to refer to humans. Who should be used instead of that.

(B) that as young adults might once have bought homes
Incorrect. That is not used to refer to humans. Who should be used instead of that.

(C) who might once have bought homes in young adulthood
Correct. This statement correctly uses who to refer to humans. Also, the use of once before the point of reference (young adulthood) is proper in this statement which suggests that they bought homes once in young adulthood .

(D) who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes
Incorrect. The use of at one time implies a faulty meaning that all people might have bought house at one same time.

(E) who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought homes
Incorrect. The use of at one time implies a faulty meaning that all people might have bought house at one same time.

Due to ongoing instability in the real estate market, many people that might at one time have bought homes as young adults are choosing to forgo such purchases in favor of living in rented accommodations.

(A) that might at one time have bought homes as young adults
this is used for people and hence incorrect
(B) that as young adults might once have bought homes
this is used for people and hence incorrect
(C) who might once have bought homes in young adulthood
who is used for people. in young adulthood modifies bought homes and makes sense. hence this looks correct. lets check other answers
(D) who in young adulthood might have at one time bought homes
who is used for people. in young adulthood now modifies might have and changes meaning that they bought homes in young adulthood.
(E) who, when they were young adults, might at one time have bought homes
who is used for people. when they were young adults again changes the focus and when denotes the time and is in a comma separated. So it denotes it is not essential element of sentence.

So overall C looks right and is the answer
