Sentence: Entomologists have recently discovered what appears to be a global mega-colony of ants, a massive complex that consists of over 22 million interconnected anthill networks constructed by over 200 billion Argentinean ants some 100 years ago and sprawling across the Americas, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Meaning Analysis: Entomologists have Entomologists global mega-colony of ants, and this massive colony or complex consists of over 22 million interconnected anthill networks. This networks which are constructed by 200 billion Argentinean ants some 100 years ago and this network is spread across Americas, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

So here constructed ..... and sprawling => Modifiers modifying the anthill networks and these modifiers are connected with and so there is no parallelism issue and original construction is right so ans is A but lets check other options

(A) sprawling -> correct so ans
(B) sprawls -> this will make contruction "modifier and verb" construction which is wrong
(C) sprawled -> again sprawled accorss can make it a modifier after the and but it will change the meaning so not the ans
(D) it sprawled -> again parallelism error will be introduces as construction will be "modifier and clause"
(E) is sprawling -> same as B

So the ans is option A

IMO the answer should be A.

(A) sprawling

no issues. 'constructed' and 'sprawling' are both participles modifying 'anthill networks'. Such parallelism makes sense.

(B) sprawls

this choice seems to make parallelism with the verb 'consists' and modify 'a massive complex'. This could make sense, but if it used 'that' to be parallel with 'that consists', this choice would be a contender.
Eliminate as A is better.

(C) sprawled

wrong tense.

(D) it sprawled

wrong tense

(E) is sprawling

unnecessary continuous

Parallelism stem: ".... a global mega-colony of ants that consists (verb) of .... and [___] (verb)

A - parallelism issue - we need a verb after and - sprawling is a present participle
B - meaning issue - sprawls changes the intended meaning - it says "mega-colony sprawls" as if an inhumane object can sprawl (spread itself)
C - parallelism issue - we need a verb after and - sprawling is past participle
D - structure issue - using it after the stem "that" is clearly wrong
E - is sprawling - verb correctly used and the meaning conveyed is correct - "global mega-colony that is sprawling across America, Europe, Asia.."

Therefore, option E is the correct answer.

The underlined part needs to be parallel to "constructed", which in this case is an verb-ed modifier.

Given this one can narrow in on Answer choice A, which, although ending in -ing is a verb-ing modifier which is parallel to "constructed" and illustrates that the anthills

(A) sprawling
Correct. Although ending in -ing, in this case 'sprawling' is not a verb but rather a modifier and thus parallel to 'constructed'.

(B) sprawls
Sprawls is a verb and therefore cannot be parallel to a modifier.

(C) sprawled
Also is a verb and cannot be used as a modifier

(D) it sprawled
Another verb which is not a modifier

(E) is sprawling
The inclusion of 'is' makes 'sprawling' a verb, and therefore incapable of being parallel to a modifier

The massive complex creates a parallel statement => that consists and the other statement should also match with that singular verb form which implies using sprawls
Other options violate parallelism.

(A) Not A. This is not happening in the present, already done
(B) Not B. Verb here doesn't explain the situation
(C) Right Ans. This is because the sentence is in the past tense.
(D) Not D, It is not correct as there are plural number of anthills
(E) Not E. This is not happening in the present, already done

(B) sprawls : is the correct option in my opinion as it is a general truth and should be explained in present tense.
Also, Sprawls is parallel to Consists.

(A) sprawling -
Correct. Since sprawling is preceded by and it means it is a part of a parallel list. Going back in the clause, we can see that the list is forming at -22 million interconnected anthill networks constructed by .... and sprawling ..... . This is a parallel construction that states two characteristics of anthill networks.

(B) sprawls
Incorrect. Once we identify that the two parallel items denotes characteristics of anthill networks we can say that this is incorrect choice as this choice uses singular verb sprawls for plural noun networks .

(C) sprawled
Incorrect.. Since the discovery has been stated in present tense (passage states -what appears to be), use of past tense is incorrect.

(D) it sprawled
Incorrect. Since the discovery has been stated in present tense (passage states -what appears to be), use of past tense is incorrect.

(E) is sprawling.
Incorrect. This choice uses singular verb is sprawling for plural noun networks

Let's look at the answer choices:

(A) sprawling
This form of the verb is a present participle, typically used to modify a noun or pronoun, but in this context, the mega-colony is performing the action, so we need a verb form that indicates this. This sounds a bit weird. so, (eliminate)

(B) sprawls
This is a present tense verb that agrees in number with "mega-colony," the mega-colony "consists" (present tense) of the interconnected networks, which were constructed some 100 years ago. Therefore, using present tense "sprawls" implies the sprawling is a regular, habitual action. It is still present. (let's keep this one for now)

(C) sprawled
This past tense verb doesn't fit here, and also makes the sentence awkward and grammatically incorrect. (eliminate)

(D) it sprawled
The pronoun "it" is unnecessary and makes the sentence grammatically incorrect. Also, the usage of "sprawled" is incorrect. (eliminate)

(E) is sprawling
The present continuous tense indicates an action that is happening now. This option looks grammatically correct as well, but it makes the sentence sound awkward. Also the logic is not consistent. (can be eliminated)

I will go with option B.
Waiting for OA.

(A) sprawling
Explanation: This option uses the present participle "sprawling" to describe the current state of the global mega-colony of ants. It maintains parallelism with the phrase "constructed by" and fits well in the context of the sentence.

(B) sprawls
Explanation: This option uses the simple present tense "sprawls," but it doesn't match the tense of the main verb "have discovered," which is in the present perfect tense. The use of "sprawls" suggests a continuous action rather than the already established state described in the sentence.

(C) sprawled
Explanation: This option uses the past participle "sprawled," but it doesn't convey the idea that the global mega-colony of ants is still in existence. The past participle suggests that the ants constructed the anthill networks 100 years ago and no longer maintain the sprawling complex.

(D) it sprawled
Explanation: This option uses the pronoun "it" to refer to the global mega-colony of ants. However, the sentence structure is better without the pronoun, and "it sprawled" doesn't convey the intended meaning that the ants constructed the anthill networks.

(E) is sprawling
Explanation: This option uses the present continuous tense "is sprawling," which suggests that the ants are currently in the process of sprawling across the Americas, Europe, Australia, and Asia. However, the sentence discusses the discovery of a global mega-colony that already exists, rather than describing an ongoing action.

A is the Correct Option

(A) sprawling - within the that clause which is modifying a massive complex - we have
interconnected anthill networks - constructed by..... and sprawling across..... - are parallel (verb-ed modifier can be parallel to verb-ing modifier as both are modifying the interconnected anthill networks)
Also, usage of adjective 'sprawling' to describe the interconnected anthill networks is correct. It means that it is sprawling and is still continuing to do so.
Hence, Option A is correct.

(B) sprawls - is a verb - this implies - a massive complex that consists of.... and sprawls across.... here usage of that after and is necessary. Option B is incorrect.
(C) sprawled
Incorrect - as it implies that the interconnected anthill networks are no more expanding.
(D) it sprawled - incorrect due to reasons given for option C
(E) is sprawling - incorrect due to reasons given for option B
Answer A

(A) sprawling - ing-modifier compared with ed modifier "constructed". hence correct
(B) sprawls - sprawls is a verb here and cannot be paralled to modifier "constructed"
(C) sprawled - sprawled is a verb here and cannot be paralled to modifier "constructed"
(D) it sprawled - here clause "it sprawled" is being compared with "constructed"
(E) is sprawling - "is sprawling" is not parelled with the modifier "constructed"
