Re: As contrasted with other large mammals, which tend to seek shade [#permalink]
Abhishek009 Quick clarification.

In answer choice, B. Is the use of In comparison to correct? Now even if the use of "In comparison to" is correct B is still wrong. Is it wrong because we have a noun in the non underlined part because of which we have to use a different comparison marker such as unlike and not in comparison with? Also can "In comparison with" not be used to refer to nouns.?

I will appreciate your input. Thanks a lot.

Comparison need to be between different type of animals

Unlike noun1, noun2

Unlike is best usage here ,As contrasted is used to compare actions not nouns

A) As contrasted with other large mammals,
B) In contrast to other large mammals,
C) Unlike the behavior of other large mammals,
D) Unlike that of other large mammals,
E) Unlike other large mammals,

Official Explanation

Creating a filter: The original sentence has a comparison, so we should check that comparison. The answer choices here are largely similar and they all end in the word "mammals." The author's intended meaning is to contrast "mammals" with "kit fox." As for how the comparison is introduced, it's mostly idiomatic: "unlike" is correct and simple. (E) is therefore the correct answer.

Further notes: (C) and (D) both establish improper comparisons of the "kit fox" with "behavior" and "that," whatever "that" is. Therefore, the correct answer is (E). You might wonder whether "in contrast" is ever correct, since it's an English phrase, after all. I'd say that a state of contrast, for example as in the case of two colors next to each other or a setting on a TV or computer monitor, is one in which the differences between two things affects how you view both of them. We have no such thing here -- only a difference, which is captured perfectly by the word "unlike."

The correct answer is (E).

Hey,

In this question, why didnt we use B option?

It was grammatically correct, still we didnt use it.

Thanks!

The version created via the use of (E) is a bit more clear and concise than the version created via the use of choice (B).

All the same, (B) is fine, and so, it’s unlikely that you would see a choice like (B) considered incorrect in an actual GMAT SC question.
