Hi,

I am a female, Indian MBA aspirant. I scored a 690 on my GMAT (67 percentile quant; 82 percentile verbal and 48 percentile in IR - 85 percentile total). I have one year of work ex as a software engineer at one of the leading investment banking firms in the world. I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from a reputed college in India, finishing with a GPA of 9.12/10. I am aiming for an MiM in one of the top 20 b-schools. How would you rate my chances of getting into my dream program with this profile? Should I retake the GMAT and improve my score for a better chances?

Sincerely appreciate your help and feedback.

Thank you!

You seem to have a good profile - I would rate your chances of breaking into a top 20 program for an MiM to be high. To be on the safer side, you can try to improve your GMAT score to 720, if possible.

All the best,
Karthik

T15 - T20 schools.

Overview:

Born in India, but lived in Japan for 8+ years, naturalized Japanese citizen. Fluent English, Advanced Japanese (JLPT N1)

GMAT 730, B.Tech from a no-name Indian college. GPA 8.7 / 10

Started my career at a WITCH company, moved to Japan within a year, and worked in a client-facing role for 4 years. (Project management / Client Liaison)

Moved to a computer software and services company listed on the S&P 500 in a technical sales position. Started at associate level, currently managing the department in APAC and India - 2 direct and 4 indirect reports across Japan, China, Korea and India. 3 promotions in 6 years. Consistently helped generate around USD 1M in revenue every year.

Co-curricular - Founded some clubs and groups back in high school and college. Used to do combat sports when younger. Used to be part of a Toastmasters club till a couple of years back (held a VP position).

Post-MBA Goals - Want to move into Customer Strategy at my own company.

Likely irrelevant, but also have a PMP certification (and tons of software certs). Please let me know if there's any more information I need to add.

Answer: Schools typically release their #MBAessays in late May/June.

They will also start prospective student outreach shortly - so stay connected with them (email/social media/website signup) so you can stay updated about the latest news.

Attend admissions webinars and events as and when possible. Signing up for events, and attending them is a strong signal of you interest.

Can you get an #MBA #LOR from a manager at a company that you would have worked in for a very short period?

Candidate: I would have been with my company for only 3 months by the time I submit my apps. If I take an #LOR from my then-current supervisor would the adcom view it negatively? Would they think that my manager has not known me for long enough to write a great LOR?

My answer: Schools will not view getting a letter from your then-present supervisor negatively.

Having said that, they would probably feel that the period of engagement wouldn't be long enough for your supervisor to have formed a certain impression of you about which he/she can write objectively about - this holds both for good and for bad opinions.

So, they may view the LOR to be inconclusive, even if they don't view it negatively.

Of course, exceptions exist.

If the new manager has enough content to write about you - sometimes you may work for a very short period but still on something impactful - that’s perfectly fine.

Having the previous supervisor write one would be a good backup!
