Hi, FortunaAdmissionsMJ would really appreciate any feedback on my application!

Background:
Nationality: Venezuelan
Age: 27
Work Experience: 5 years
GMAT: 700 (48Q, 38V, 8IR, 4AWA)
Undergrad major: Business (top 15%), the Accounting (top 15%) both at UCAB (one of the best schools in Venezuela)
Masters degree in Finance at IESA (the most prestigious graduate institution in Venezuela)

Work Experience:
- 1 year as a financial analyst at a LATAM e-commerce company when it was beginning its operations in Venezuela.

I managed the cash flow of the company, delivered appropiate financial statements (organized the financial information so that a big 4 auditing firm delivered an unqualified opinion), kept track of COD and Marketplace sales and analyzed POS sales to prevent frauds.

Then I left to Paris for a semester to study e-commerce and came back to Venezuela and got my second degree (accounting).

Started working at a company that does house flipping in the south of Florida as the administrative and accounting manager, a job I held for almost 3 years.
Here I had to keep track of the ROI of every investment and support every project with their projections. Kept track of the financial statements and developed the marketing strategy.
Managed a team of two people, one marketing analyst, and one accounting analyst.

In the meantime, I pursued my degree in Finance and got an opportunity to work as a trader at a major wealth management firm in Venezuela, where I have been since (2 years now).

I oversee approximately 800MM of AUM, and develop strategies focused on each client's risk and return objectives. Along with my team, we deliver a monthly presentation on our outlook of the economy and the markets.

Even though I haven't spent time at an NGO, I have been teaching Finance at my alma mater for undergrads in business and accounting for two years now, a job that's known in Venezuela as some sort of volunteering job because the pay is insignificant.

Other accomplishments:
CFA level 1 passed
Series 7 license
Recognized as one of the best professors at UCAB (2018)
Recognized as a glocal student (a student that thinks globally and acts locally) two times (2013, 2015)
Won the best delegation at the Latin American Model of United Nations (2013) - My committee was the only francophone committee
Elected as the faculty member at the UCAB's Business School Council (2012-213)

Took the GMAT for the first time in 2016 (640, V35-Q42, IR7, AWA 5.0)
Took it again recently (700, V38-Q48, IR8, AWA 4.0)

Target Schools & Goals:
Schools: HBS, GSB, Wharton, Booth, MIT (all round 1)
Immediate Post-MBA Goals: Join a PE, VC or hedge fund
Long term Post-MBA Goals: Come back to Venezuela to disrupt the financial industry with the tools acquired in my previous experience.

Questions:
- Will my low AWA score on the GMAT hurt my chances of getting in my target schools? Should I retake the GMAT?
- Do my short term-long term post-MBA goals make sense to AdComs?
- I have about two months to take the TOEFL, write my essays and get my recommendation letters if I plan on applying on R1. Should I plan on applying to R2 instead or will this severely hurt my chances of getting in?
- Would AdComs committees consider my teaching experience as volunteering? (To add a little context, the monthly wage could buy me a fast food lunch)
- Any specific recommendations or something I should focus on?

Thanks a lot for your comments!

Hi jagp20,

You have a really neat profile and some things stand out as unique and will grab the attention of ad coms.
Two months can definitely be enough time to apply for R1 now that most schools have opened their apps and released essays. Plus Toefl. Since you are aiming for the top schools, your gmat score worries me a bit as it's definitely much lower than the average. I think if you really want to get into the top schools you should re-write and apply in R2 to give you more time. Though it's hard to just say 're-write' without really knowing more about you. I strongly encourage you to give Fortuna a call for a free consultation and from there, after reviewing your CV and getting to know you better, we would be able to better gauge if you should re-write. It's all about a well rounded candidacy. The fact that you are from Venezuela too is a big differentiator as there aren't as many people from V that apply to these b-schools. So that will work well in your favor and the fact that you want to go back to your country is great - so your short term/long term goals bode well (as long as you justify why this path in your application and if it's really achievable).
And yes you could definitely use your teaching as volunteering, extra curriculars.

We hope to hear from you as you have a very interesting profile! Either way, good luck with everything!

Hi,
It would be great if you could evaluate my profile and answer questions in the end. Apologies in advance for the longish post.
General Details
Background: Male, 30 Years old, Indian [Have you heard that before? Lol]
GMAT: 750 [Q50, V41] IR 8 AWA 5
Plan to apply for Sep’ 21 session

Educational Background
Bachelors: B.Eng in Polymer Science and Chemical Technology from Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi, India. 74% (Don’t know GPA). Graduated in 2010.
Masters: M.S. in Plastics Engineering from University of Massachusetts Lowell (highly reputed program).
GPA: 4.0. Graduated in 2015.

Professional Summary with major highlights
Job 1: Product Development in small to medium plastics compounding company. [India] [2010 – 2013]
• Started there as a trainee and left as development manager. Had 2 promotions in 3 years.
• Work included developing new product platforms to increase sales as well as diversify product portfolio. Also worked with quality department of plants across India to standardize testing resulting in quality complaints, etc. [Don’t have numbers right now]
• Helped set up operations in its first overseas plant.
• Acted as a liaison between technology and sales and marketing – worked in streamlining our products, developing materials for tradeshow, etc.

Job 2: Product Development in a major Plastics manufacturing company [USA] [2015 – 2018]
• Had 2 roles in this company. Both primarily in product development in different parts of the business. I was moved within one year of joining to the company to the headquarters due to my good performance.
• Involved with a team working on a patented product technology that provides a sustainable alternative to much maligned Styrofoam (styrene) cups, etc. Instrumental in bringing about $500K in cost savings as well as introducing a new product platform. Filed 2 patents for the work done there.

Job 3: Technical Service & Development in a Major Oil & Gas company [A Blue chip company as they like to call it] [USA] [2018 – Present]
• Work in the chemical business of the company on the interface of technology and business serving customers in the packaging industry.
• Global technical lead for a new application area to the company. Serve as technical lead coordinating activities of 3 global teams.

Extra-Curricular Activities
• Active in the volunteering space since my undergraduate days. Currently involved or in the past involved with various charities doing work ranging from food donation, teaching and mentoring underprivileged kids, waste management, etc.
• During my undergraduate, captain of the Cricket team and led the team to its first ever podium finish in an inter varsity tournament.

Why MBA?
I have spent the initial part of the career in technology which was planned to develop a strong technical foundation. I wish to now round of my professional skill set by gathering business acumen. Although there are many ways of achieving that, being a firm believer of learning via education – I wish to enroll in an immersive full-time program to get the maximum experience as well as better prepare for my career aspirations (read below).

Post MBA Goals
With an eventual goal/aspiration of being an entrepreneur focusing on developing sustainable solutions to issues such as plastic waste, I feel in the short term I would want to work in consulting helping companies in a similar area. This will better prepare me when I venture into entrepreneurship.

School Selection
Currently my target school is INSEAD. Based on my own research and talking to current students/alumni, it is a school that gives you an opportunity to network and learn from people of different nationalities, backgrounds, etc. It is aptly called business school of the world and I wish to take advantage of gaining that global perspective.
Other reasons are it being a shorter program, thus lower opportunity cost as well as with the desire to work/explore a different geography.

Questions/Concerns
• Am I too old for an MBA? By the time I will start, I will be 32. My understanding is that European schools generally have an older demographic, so should not be much of an issue. The reason I am applying for that session so I have enough experience in my current company for it to hold some weight when looking for jobs post MBA.
• Being from an over-represented pool (sucks to be Indian male engineer!), what are my chances? Is my work in a niche industry going to be enough of a differentiator?
• Since I have a year before I submit my applications, what can I do to bolster my chances?
• My target school is INSEAD. But what other schools should I apply to?

Hi there tanuj20,

Thanks for reaching out.
As you probably know, the toughest candidate pool is an Indian Male in IT or Engineering so the fact that you are in marketing already sets you apart which is great!
For those schools you have a great gmat score and indeed your gpa is on the lower side so the only way to really compensate for that is to have a super high gmat (are you planning on retaking?). You can still apply with your score but will look even better if it's higher considering your applicant pool. Not sure if there is a reason why your grades in undergrad were on the lower side but if there WAS a reason eg health issues, personal issues, too much dedication to a sports team, or that kind of thing, then yes you can include that in your application (generally in the optional essays). But don't use an 'excuse' if there was no particular reason.

Seems like you've had great career progression and achievements with your promotion and awards so you definitely want to highlight that, plus leading teams/working with others.
Your extra curriculars seem ok so you'll really have to upsell those that you have done. Any volunteering to help set you apart?
The thing with the international schools, INSEAD, Judge, HEC, IE is that they really like int'l experience - do you have anything work related or even personal? an exchange abroad you have done? or work with int'l clients? If you don't, you will really need to highlight why you want a int'l school and that you have an int'l mindset. The other schools seem like a good choice but you have to ask yourself, why are you choosing that school (specialty, location, network, length etc) and see if it's the best fit for you. Hopefully you are attending info sessions as well to give you a sense of the school culture.

If you'd like any further coaching or consultation, feel free to set something up with Fortuna on our website.

Good luck with everything.

AG23,

Hi there,

Applying at age 30 can be a bit tricky and as you said, in the most competitive applicant pool (male indian engineer) even trickier! Post MBA plans sound great and often the people that are accepted in their 30s have similar aspirations (i.e. if you are looking to get into consulting or finance at 30 then it's not as appealing for ad coms) so if you can make a strong case that an MBA is what could be paramount in helping you make this switch to an entrepreneur, then go for it. Chances will be smaller but always worth a shot. You've got a very strong gmat and strong gpa in your masters so academics won't be a concern.
Sounds like you've been volunteering for a long time which is great, and also being captain looks terrific in terms of leadership.

The only thing that possibly seems lacking in any int'l experience. Do you have any professionally related or personally? Any int'l exposure would need to be dispersed throughout your essays since this is a key criteria for INSEAD. Another good option for you in terms of schools is IMD as they are a great int'l school and the ave age is closer to your age. Also HEC can be more forgiving as well.

You mentioned you won't apply for another year but I would do it the sooner you can re: your age. In the meantime, try and get some int'l experience through work (assignment abroad, working with an in'l team/client etc) or personally. And keep up the volunteering and any other extra curriculars.

Sounds like you have a very interesting profile therefore if you'd ever like some help with your application, I'd be happy to help. It wont' be so easy re: you age so we can help shape your app to help mitigate your age 'weakness' if you will!

Keep me posted.

Best,

dsam12,

Hey there, thanks for reaching out.

Oh dear I'm afraid at age 31 it can be quite tricky for a full time MBA. Not impossible - just harder! Have you considered some of the MSx programs? often they are targeted for people in their 30s. Could be an option? Also schools like Yale and IMD often have a higher average age so you might want to look into those schools as well for full time MBA.

In terms of real estate and best schools, check out this article: https://poetsandquants.com/2019/06/10/t ... admissions

You've got an interesting profile though overall with int'l exposure (good for insead in particular). Looks like you have extracurriculars but maybe nothing too current re: not much time since you are an IB?! Something we would need to look into and explore.

We'd be happy to set up a complimentary phone consultation if you'd like - we can talk to you about best schools to approach regarding your age and career aspirations and by working with us we can try to help mitigate and work with some of the weaknesses in your profile.I'm sure you've got some great material to work with so we can put that forward and work our best with that in the app. Let us know if you'd like to chat!

All the best,

Hi Zishanuddin,

Thanks for reaching out.

Your question really depends on what you want in a program - many of them of course recruit for consultancy positions (and focus on entrepreneurship) but my first advice to you is to start signing up for some info sessions/online events or events in person for various schools to see which schools resonate with you. Or even visit them if you can.
Also where do you see yourself? In the US? East Coast, West Coast, or Europe perhaps?
Then you need to ask yourself if you'd be willing to rewrite the GMAT as if you are interested in the top tier school particularly in the US, you will need a much higher GMAT score since you are competing in the most competitive pool of Indian applicants. (BUt it's also awesome and more unique that you are an entrepreneur which will set you apart, which is great).
If not, (and that's totally fine as there are other great schools not in the top tier) then your 700 score is great and you could pick schools a little less competitive.
Do you want a 1 year program or 2 year?
Take these things into consideration first before narrowing it down to a select few schools.

Good luck!

Hello,

Just a quick question. I will be submitting an application soon for R1 to Bocconi (not SDA so not an MBA too - just a regular master). Currently I’m doing a bachelor at another quite well reputed uni in Europe (KU Leuven), yet I tried to transfer over to Bocconi for a bachelor two years ago, but got denied. My weakest point at the time presumably was the entrance test. Now, should I address that I have already tried to get into Bocconi previously in my motivational letter thereby showing how much I’d actually want to study there (as it was my kinda dream uni for the past couple of years) and that would not even want to consider any other unis, or should I not bring it up at all (although I’m applying in the same account I submitted my bachelor application in, so guessing they will see my previous application anyway)?

Thanks a lot in advance for any input!

Hi sasyaharry,

Thanks for your note. I'm not entirely sure what your question is! But I'm guessing you want to see if you have a chance at Haas?

It seems that your age might be a bit too old for Haas (not totally impossible but very slim chance as your age is way over the average). And with your GMAT score on top of that, it's a bit too low. Would you consider re-writing? YOu've got a really interesting profile and unique work experience (working abroad too) but you will still be competing in the very competitive Indian applicant pool. So the higher the gmat (in the 700s range) the better.

Have you considered the MIT fellows program or Stanford GSx or other similar programs? These are catered to people generally in the their 30s or early 40's - mid career professionals. You might want to check programs like this out.

Let me know if you have other questions. Best,

Hi jtanone, I'm so sorry but I'm not very familiar with accounting Phd's so you'll have to ask someone else! Apologies

Best,

Hi chinmayrav,

You've got a great profile for all of the 5 schools you've mentioned. They are really looking for the same things - career progression/accomplishments, strong academics, leadership experience and extra curriculars/community work.
You cover all of them nicely (you do have only 2.5 years of work experience under your belt so for Rotman this is a bit under the average but still fine to apply as long as you can show some accomplishments). Also leadership examples will have to shine through.
Your academics are great for these schools (plus your English test is above the min requirements) and I love that you've got some great and unique extra curriculars and community involvement as admission committed members don't always see this from indian applicants. So I think you will have a great chance - of course depending on how your craft your application.

If you need assistance with any applications, I'm happy to help. I'm Canadian myself and manage the Canadian school arm of Fortuna Admissions as I know the programs well. Let me know if you have further questions.

Best,

Best,

Thanks and yes, I am retaking the GMAT in Jan. Prepping for it now.
I am aware that my age can be a factor in deciding but I am still inside the median age range :D.

Thanks for reviewing my profile.

Hi FortunaAdmissionsMJ,

Would love your feedback on my profile.

Basic Background/Demographics:
Current age: 26 - will be 28/29 when matriculating (thinking of applying in 2021 for Fall 2022 admission - explanation below)
Ethnicity: East Asian (not China)
Gender: Male
GRE: 331 (166Q - 89% ; 165V - 96%; AWA: 5.5 - 98%)
Reason for 2022 admission: Will get Canadian citizenship around then; ideally working in US post-MBA so having Canadian passport is much easier for work authorization because of the TN-Visa that allows management consultants to work in the US
Fun fact: Lived/attended school in 5 countries (US/Canada/Asia)

Educational Background:
Undergrad: Top 3 university in Canada
Dates: Sep 2012-Jun 2016
GPA: 3.3/4.0
Major: Mechanical engineering; minor in aeronautical engineering, minor in finance
Performance: Mixed - some A's, some C's - no upward trend; mixed each semester
Note: School known for grade deflation and extremely theoretical (think proofs, etc) - prefer a B average
Extracurriculars in undergrad:
  • Business/Engineering club
--Climbed ranks (became president) and turned around lackluster business/engineering club to become top club in engineering faculty for companies to look for engineering undergrads to work in their business fields
--Launched first annual business/engineering case competition where a Yale SOM assistant director attended + 10 large companies + 3 sponsors
  • Joined novice rowing team in 3rd year; was on varsity team in 4th year

Study abroad semester: University of Hong Kong
Dates: Jan-June 2015
Performance: Pass/Fail; Failed one course abroad
Explanation: Supposed to take 4 "easy" classes abroad but took 6 advanced courses

Summer MBA Program: M7 Business School
GPA: 4.0/4.0
Dates: July 2016
Note: much more interesting since it was more "applicable" and "tangible"

Work Experience:
Global Tier 2 consulting firm (outside of MBB and Big 4 accounting firms)
Dates: late-2016-early 2019 (~2.5 years)
Location: Canada
Achievements:
  • Team won 1st place in North American innovation challenge (51 teams total - teams all across US + Canada)
  • One of the youngest analysts to lead a team of 4 analysts for my project workstreams (even consultants - a level above analyst - have maybe only one or two analysts under their wing)
  • Turned around one of our client's relationship at one of our largest clients which resulted in extra deal signings
  • Promoted to consultant before receiving short-term notice of mandatory military service
Extracurricular: was on board of international board of business/engineering club; increased outreach to other schools + initiated process for schools to join our organization before being called to military (same club as in undergrad but parent organization)

Mandatory military service in East Asian country
Dates: early 2019-early 2020
Location: East Asian country
Achievements:
  • Created and launched an algorithm for employee scheduling to be used across all 9 divisions that's currently reducing time spent on employee scheduling by 80%
  • Only conscript out of ~100 to get promoted by our commander (not supposed to happen for conscripts)
  • Only conscript to be able to work in international affairs - specifically requested by the section leader
  • Received medal for exemplary service since I helped as a translator for our commander on multiple occasions

Returning to Tier 2 consulting firm after military service

Recommenders:
Mid/high tier management in consulting firm

MBA location:
Indifferent - small town, big city, close to hub, far from hub, etc are all fine

Ideal MBA curriculum/style
More flexible curriculum + ideally have Grade Non Disclosure

MBA brand:
Looking to work abroad 3-5 years after MBA graduation, so international brand recognition is important

MBA Goals:
Get formalized education in strategic/global leadership since I'm working with senior executives and would like to understand the fundamentals of how they make decisions and to "speak their language" more effectively because what I know is from observation and trial/error

Post-MBA Career:
Management consulting right out of bat (open to others if offer similar comp/opportunity for advancement)

Post-MBA location:
Ideally US for a bit (no region/city/town preference), then ideally Europe/Middle East/Australia (like to move)

Ideal school choice (M7 minus Sloan + Dartmouth Tuck/Yale SOM/Duke Fuqua):
  • Stanford GSB
  • HBS
  • Wharton
  • Booth
  • Kellogg
  • Columbia

One or two of the below:
  • Dartmouth
  • Yale SOM
  • Duke Fuqua

Questions:
    1. Is my school list too ambitious? More specifically, which 2-year MBA schools should I keep/remove/add? I'm thinking of applying for 6 or 7 schools where:
    *1 or 2 schools are a "reach"
    *2-3 schools are "average probability"
*1 is more of a "safety" school that is still in the top 16 MBA programs in the US, else I would not consider doing the MBA.
    2. How should I address my mixed academic performance in my undergrad (including study abroad)?
    3. What other things in my profile/application should I consider patching up/improving?
