AG23,

Hi there,

Applying at age 30 can be a bit tricky and as you said, in the most competitive applicant pool (male indian engineer) even trickier! Post MBA plans sound great and often the people that are accepted in their 30s have similar aspirations (i.e. if you are looking to get into consulting or finance at 30 then it's not as appealing for ad coms) so if you can make a strong case that an MBA is what could be paramount in helping you make this switch to an entrepreneur, then go for it. Chances will be smaller but always worth a shot. You've got a very strong gmat and strong gpa in your masters so academics won't be a concern.
Sounds like you've been volunteering for a long time which is great, and also being captain looks terrific in terms of leadership.

The only thing that possibly seems lacking in any int'l experience. Do you have any professionally related or personally? Any int'l exposure would need to be dispersed throughout your essays since this is a key criteria for INSEAD. Another good option for you in terms of schools is IMD as they are a great int'l school and the ave age is closer to your age. Also HEC can be more forgiving as well.

You mentioned you won't apply for another year but I would do it the sooner you can re: your age. In the meantime, try and get some int'l experience through work (assignment abroad, working with an in'l team/client etc) or personally. And keep up the volunteering and any other extra curriculars.

Sounds like you have a very interesting profile therefore if you'd ever like some help with your application, I'd be happy to help. It wont' be so easy re: you age so we can help shape your app to help mitigate your age 'weakness' if you will!

Keep me posted.

Best,

dsam12,

Hey there, thanks for reaching out.

Oh dear I'm afraid at age 31 it can be quite tricky for a full time MBA. Not impossible - just harder! Have you considered some of the MSx programs? often they are targeted for people in their 30s. Could be an option? Also schools like Yale and IMD often have a higher average age so you might want to look into those schools as well for full time MBA.

In terms of real estate and best schools, check out this article: https://poetsandquants.com/2019/06/10/t ... admissions

You've got an interesting profile though overall with int'l exposure (good for insead in particular). Looks like you have extracurriculars but maybe nothing too current re: not much time since you are an IB?! Something we would need to look into and explore.

We'd be happy to set up a complimentary phone consultation if you'd like - we can talk to you about best schools to approach regarding your age and career aspirations and by working with us we can try to help mitigate and work with some of the weaknesses in your profile.I'm sure you've got some great material to work with so we can put that forward and work our best with that in the app. Let us know if you'd like to chat!

All the best,

Hi Zishanuddin,

Thanks for reaching out.

Your question really depends on what you want in a program - many of them of course recruit for consultancy positions (and focus on entrepreneurship) but my first advice to you is to start signing up for some info sessions/online events or events in person for various schools to see which schools resonate with you. Or even visit them if you can.
Also where do you see yourself? In the US? East Coast, West Coast, or Europe perhaps?
Then you need to ask yourself if you'd be willing to rewrite the GMAT as if you are interested in the top tier school particularly in the US, you will need a much higher GMAT score since you are competing in the most competitive pool of Indian applicants. (BUt it's also awesome and more unique that you are an entrepreneur which will set you apart, which is great).
If not, (and that's totally fine as there are other great schools not in the top tier) then your 700 score is great and you could pick schools a little less competitive.
Do you want a 1 year program or 2 year?
Take these things into consideration first before narrowing it down to a select few schools.

Good luck!

Hello,

Just a quick question. I will be submitting an application soon for R1 to Bocconi (not SDA so not an MBA too - just a regular master). Currently I’m doing a bachelor at another quite well reputed uni in Europe (KU Leuven), yet I tried to transfer over to Bocconi for a bachelor two years ago, but got denied. My weakest point at the time presumably was the entrance test. Now, should I address that I have already tried to get into Bocconi previously in my motivational letter thereby showing how much I’d actually want to study there (as it was my kinda dream uni for the past couple of years) and that would not even want to consider any other unis, or should I not bring it up at all (although I’m applying in the same account I submitted my bachelor application in, so guessing they will see my previous application anyway)?

Thanks a lot in advance for any input!

Hi sasyaharry,

Thanks for your note. I'm not entirely sure what your question is! But I'm guessing you want to see if you have a chance at Haas?

It seems that your age might be a bit too old for Haas (not totally impossible but very slim chance as your age is way over the average). And with your GMAT score on top of that, it's a bit too low. Would you consider re-writing? YOu've got a really interesting profile and unique work experience (working abroad too) but you will still be competing in the very competitive Indian applicant pool. So the higher the gmat (in the 700s range) the better.

Have you considered the MIT fellows program or Stanford GSx or other similar programs? These are catered to people generally in the their 30s or early 40's - mid career professionals. You might want to check programs like this out.

Let me know if you have other questions. Best,

Hi chinmayrav,

You've got a great profile for all of the 5 schools you've mentioned. They are really looking for the same things - career progression/accomplishments, strong academics, leadership experience and extra curriculars/community work.
You cover all of them nicely (you do have only 2.5 years of work experience under your belt so for Rotman this is a bit under the average but still fine to apply as long as you can show some accomplishments). Also leadership examples will have to shine through.
Your academics are great for these schools (plus your English test is above the min requirements) and I love that you've got some great and unique extra curriculars and community involvement as admission committed members don't always see this from indian applicants. So I think you will have a great chance - of course depending on how your craft your application.

If you need assistance with any applications, I'm happy to help. I'm Canadian myself and manage the Canadian school arm of Fortuna Admissions as I know the programs well. Let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks and yes, I am retaking the GMAT in Jan. Prepping for it now.
I am aware that my age can be a factor in deciding but I am still inside the median age range :D.

Thanks for reviewing my profile.

Hi FortunaAdmissionsMJ,

Would love your feedback on my profile.

Basic Background/Demographics:
Current age: 26 - will be 28/29 when matriculating (thinking of applying in 2021 for Fall 2022 admission - explanation below)
Ethnicity: East Asian (not China)
Gender: Male
GRE: 331 (166Q - 89% ; 165V - 96%; AWA: 5.5 - 98%)
Reason for 2022 admission: Will get Canadian citizenship around then; ideally working in US post-MBA so having Canadian passport is much easier for work authorization because of the TN-Visa that allows management consultants to work in the US
Fun fact: Lived/attended school in 5 countries (US/Canada/Asia)

Educational Background:
Undergrad: Top 3 university in Canada
Dates: Sep 2012-Jun 2016
GPA: 3.3/4.0
Major: Mechanical engineering; minor in aeronautical engineering, minor in finance
Performance: Mixed - some A's, some C's - no upward trend; mixed each semester
Note: School known for grade deflation and extremely theoretical (think proofs, etc) - prefer a B average
Extracurriculars in undergrad:
  • Business/Engineering club
--Climbed ranks (became president) and turned around lackluster business/engineering club to become top club in engineering faculty for companies to look for engineering undergrads to work in their business fields
--Launched first annual business/engineering case competition where a Yale SOM assistant director attended + 10 large companies + 3 sponsors
  • Joined novice rowing team in 3rd year; was on varsity team in 4th year

Study abroad semester: University of Hong Kong
Dates: Jan-June 2015
Performance: Pass/Fail; Failed one course abroad
Explanation: Supposed to take 4 "easy" classes abroad but took 6 advanced courses

Summer MBA Program: M7 Business School
GPA: 4.0/4.0
Dates: July 2016
Note: much more interesting since it was more "applicable" and "tangible"

Work Experience:
Global Tier 2 consulting firm (outside of MBB and Big 4 accounting firms)
Dates: late-2016-early 2019 (~2.5 years)
Location: Canada
Achievements:
  • Team won 1st place in North American innovation challenge (51 teams total - teams all across US + Canada)
  • One of the youngest analysts to lead a team of 4 analysts for my project workstreams (even consultants - a level above analyst - have maybe only one or two analysts under their wing)
  • Turned around one of our client's relationship at one of our largest clients which resulted in extra deal signings
  • Promoted to consultant before receiving short-term notice of mandatory military service
Extracurricular: was on board of international board of business/engineering club; increased outreach to other schools + initiated process for schools to join our organization before being called to military (same club as in undergrad but parent organization)

Mandatory military service in East Asian country
Dates: early 2019-early 2020
Location: East Asian country
Achievements:
  • Created and launched an algorithm for employee scheduling to be used across all 9 divisions that's currently reducing time spent on employee scheduling by 80%
  • Only conscript out of ~100 to get promoted by our commander (not supposed to happen for conscripts)
  • Only conscript to be able to work in international affairs - specifically requested by the section leader
  • Received medal for exemplary service since I helped as a translator for our commander on multiple occasions

Returning to Tier 2 consulting firm after military service

Recommenders:
Mid/high tier management in consulting firm

MBA location:
Indifferent - small town, big city, close to hub, far from hub, etc are all fine

Ideal MBA curriculum/style
More flexible curriculum + ideally have Grade Non Disclosure

MBA brand:
Looking to work abroad 3-5 years after MBA graduation, so international brand recognition is important

MBA Goals:
Get formalized education in strategic/global leadership since I'm working with senior executives and would like to understand the fundamentals of how they make decisions and to "speak their language" more effectively because what I know is from observation and trial/error

Post-MBA Career:
Management consulting right out of bat (open to others if offer similar comp/opportunity for advancement)

Post-MBA location:
Ideally US for a bit (no region/city/town preference), then ideally Europe/Middle East/Australia (like to move)

Ideal school choice (M7 minus Sloan + Dartmouth Tuck/Yale SOM/Duke Fuqua):
  • Stanford GSB
  • HBS
  • Wharton
  • Booth
  • Kellogg
  • Columbia

One or two of the below:
  • Dartmouth
  • Yale SOM
  • Duke Fuqua

Questions:
    1. Is my school list too ambitious? More specifically, which 2-year MBA schools should I keep/remove/add? I'm thinking of applying for 6 or 7 schools where:
    *1 or 2 schools are a "reach"
    *2-3 schools are "average probability"
*1 is more of a "safety" school that is still in the top 16 MBA programs in the US, else I would not consider doing the MBA.
    2. How should I address my mixed academic performance in my undergrad (including study abroad)?
    3. What other things in my profile/application should I consider patching up/improving?

Hi Bikki08,

Hard to say what your chances are since I don't know your profile very well. But it's all about how you frame your experience in the application. So have you had career progression in those 3 years? promotions? what accomplishments have your achieved professionally (and personally)? Did you get good undergrad grades and were you involved in the school community/clubs?
What extra curriculars or volunteering have you done or are currently doing? All of these play a vital role in your app so it's about being well rounded. YOour gmat score is good but to be even more competitive in your applicant pool you could always retake for a 700 plus. Really depends on the school and their averages.

If you want to set up a call with Fortuna to get a better sense if you have a good fit, we'd be happy to chat (for free). And we can also assess which schools would be a good fit for you.

All the best, thanks for reaching out.
