Breakdown of Common GMAT Official Guide Practice Questions: 13th Edition vs. 12th Edition

Mike McGarry, GMAT expert at Magoosh, has compiled several tables comparing old questions in the OG12 to new questions in the OG 13. You can see which questions in OG 12 were dropped and which questions in OG 13 are new.

You'll find this helpful if:

1. You own one of the two editions, and want to know exactly how much unique material you would gain by buying the other.
2. You own both editions and want to identify the repeat questions.

These spreadsheets include tables that specify which old questions got dropped, replaced with new ones, or kept the same. They're organized by section/question type, and there are two sheets: OG 13 --> OG 12 and OG 12 --> OG 13, so that you can compare in whichever direction is more convenient for you.

The Diagnostic Tests
The Diagnostic Test is 100% identical in both editions. Not only is every question the same: even the layout and the page numbers are identical! Not one jot has been altered.

Quantitative: Problem Solving
In this section, 45 questions in OG 12 have been replaced with new questions in OG 13.

Quantitative: Data Sufficiency
In this section, 36 questions in OG 12 have been replaced with new questions in OG 13.

In this section, 26 questions in OG 12 have been replaced with new questions in OG 13.

Verbal: Critical Reasoning
In this section, 25 questions in OG 12 have been replaced with new questions in OG 13.

Verbal: Sentence Correction
In this section, 25 questions in OG 12 have been replaced with new questions in OG 13.

Takeaways
Let us know whether you find this type of breakdown helpful, and any questions you might have about any of the information above! Also, any suggestions or requests for other similar GMAT material-related breakdowns are also welcome .

IR is not counted in the main score, which is out of 800. IR will be counted on the scale of 8, similar to argument( scale of 6).

hey guys, I have just started with OG 13th after OG 11th. Do I need the OG12th??

Also, in OG13th there aren't any questions on IR? Can you suggest some ways to practice questions of IR section?

Thanks!

Thank you for posting these tables. I haven't looked at the verbal side yet, but on the quantitative side, there seems to be errors in the Data Sufficiency tables. For instance, the tables claim that #3 in OG13 DS corresponds to #2 in OG12 when it actually corresponds to #3 in OG12. There are other errors: the attachment indicates that #1, 2, and 4 in OG13 DS are new questions when in fact they correspond to #1, 2 and 47 in OG12 DS etc... The problem solving tables are great though.

Just a heads up for people using this as a reference. Does anyone know of another resource that maps questions accurately?

Thank you for that resource. It is great for finding out which problems are new, but unless I missed something, it does not include a reference that ties repeated OG12 problems to their corresponding number in OG13.

Hi, Patrick

We've just fixed the errors and I updated the upload in the original post with the new version. Let us know if you find any other discrepancies, and I'm sorry for the confusion!

Thanks for the update Margaret. The DS section is much more accurate now. It will take a while for me to check all the questions.

In the PS table, there is one error. The document claims that #20 in OG13 is new, but it is the same question as #203 in OG12.

The DS table (in the first tab) incorrectly indicates that #170 in the OG13 has been dropped. The correct link is made in the 2nd tab.

DS #170 in OG 13 should be listed as "new", not "dropped", so that's been fixed, but it should not be linked to DS #167 in OG 12-- although the questions are based on similar concepts, they're not identical, which has now been accounted for as well.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks Margaret,

I can't tell the difference between DS #170 in OG13 and DS #167 in OG12 so I'm probably missing something.

Anyway your document has been very helpful. I'm glad you shared it.
