![]() The McDonough MilitaryAssociation (MMA) is a club run by student-veterans with the aim of accelerating the transition of its members from military service to new careers through internal membership, integration into the MBA Admissions and Career Center activities, and promotion of veterans to the McDonough School of Business student population at large. Robert Baker, vice president of admissions for the MMA shares how the support from members of the MMA was integral to his application process. Join members of the MMA for our Focuson Military: Prospective Student Day Thursday, November 12, for an opportunity to attend an information session, MBA class, and speak with current student veterans over lunch. To conclude your visit, you are invited to attend “War Stories Kegs,” a yearly tradition of first-year student-veterans sharing experiences from their military backgrounds. Making the transition from the military to graduate school can be a daunting task. Clarifying your career goals, navigating the application process, landing the interview, and selling yourself to Admissions is difficult for anyone, but for veterans, it is way outside our comfort zones. With the help of the McDonough School of Business MBA Admissions Office and members of the McDonough Military Association (MMA), I was able to overcome those challenges. During the application process, I attended an Admissions recruiting event focused on increasing diversity on campus. At the event, we were able to engage with the Admissions staff and current students to learn more about the program and how Georgetown McDonough distinguishes itself among other top business schools. I also had the opportunity to meet other prospective student veterans, as well as members of the MMA. Those student veterans would later serve as a critical resource as I was entering the application process. With the help of Patrick Martinez MBA ‘15 and Jimm Spannagel MBA ‘15 I was effectively able to translate my military experiences into something easily understood by the Admissions team. They also helped focus my career goals and guided me to better understand my target industry, consulting. After being invited to interview, having those contacts and resources available to me were critical during the interview preparation process. While serving in the military I was trained to operate as a member of a team. This means that I, and other veterans, often have difficulty taking responsibility or credit for our individual contribution or decisions we made as a leader of a team. Patrick and Jimm took the time to help synthesize my experiences into clear examples, which highlighted the problems faced, actions that I took, and the ultimate outcomes. Doing this paid dividends during the interview process and ultimately contributed to being admitted to the program. As the current vice president of admissions for the MMA, it is my goal to provide every prospective student veteran with the same personal connection and support that he/she needs at every step of the process. We are here as a resource to clarify your career goals, translate your military experiences, and prepare you for the interview process. Transitioning from the military into business school can be a daunting task, but it is an achievable goal with a little help! |
