Don't quote me on this, but I believe Sloan looks at every Optional Essay since they need to score each applicant - for those of you (like myself) whose video has not been viewed, I would suggest NOT being discouraged quite yet.

Do we think any more US invites will be sent out?

Based on an earlier post from "Malluce" regarding interview invitation distribution from last year, I would say yes, I expect many more US invites to come:

"Monday Oct 20, 2014: first invites
Tue-Friday Oct 21-24, 2014: almost silence
Monday 27, 2014: large # of invites sent out
Tue-Friday Oct 28-31: some invites
Wed Nov 5,2014: another large #of invites sent out (most international applicants got invites in this batch)
Friday Nov 7, 2014: some invites and ding/waitlist notifications"

The school states on the admissions director's blog that they will continue sending invites through the week of the 9th, so it seems like there is a good chance there will be more US invites in there somewhere.

Since all the interview slots were on campus, it only makes sense to invite people from the us in the first batch.

Using the same logic, they would send region based invites.

I recently learned from an expert that MIT has a quantitative approach towards selecting people for interviews.

The optional essay does not play a part in this quant selection process. So don't stress if your video has been seen or not. It doesn't really matter for interview selection.

When they debate among candidates, specially the less obvious ones, then the process becomes qualitative. The optional stuff will definetively have been seen by then and will play a part in the admission.

I am not making this up. I heard from an "expert".

When you say quantitative, do you mean focusing on GMAT score and GPA?

Congratulations to everyone who received interview invites! For those who did not, the invites are still coming out for all regions. Additional interview slots will be added when more US invites are sent out. Hang in there everyone!

GPA? Sweet, I am fked. Apparently the Canadian system sort of messed up my GPA lol even though I got an A- average at the end it might get dragged down to ~3.5 instead of 3.7.

Not sure their quantitative system is just on GPA/GMAT. I would imagine they also might rate your resume, essay(s), and recommendations on a numeric scale and use those as data points as well.

Not only that.
Somehow they attribute points to your resume, essay, gmat, gpa. Then they put all this in some kind of formula or algorithm and get a score for each applicant.

They weigh one's UG institution as well depending on its reputation and ranking in that particular country. If you are from an elite university, you get scored higher.

Do you know if they just use the overall college's reputation/ranking, or by department? Like I went to a top 10 UG engineering program, but the overall school is probably around 40...?

They will focus on the specific concentration, not the overall university ranking. Basically, the more difficult it is to get into that specific program, the higher the weight. A lower GPA from a top UG institution will carry more weight than a high GPA from a lower ranking institution.

Ok, this is what I heard at one of the On The Road info sessions.
They have a process which boils down everything to two variables. They plot these two variables for each candidate on an x-y axis. The people in the top right corner get picked first and so on...
Trust me, I am not making this up! The adcom explained about how they get to the two variables too, but I forgot, it was 3 months ago :D
