I'm definitely not giving up because of the HBS ding. To the extent I'm negative it's because it seems/feels like this process as a whole is going slower than I thought it would. October is finishing up and I don't know anything yet. Good or bad, I would love to have more news.

Here in the same boat with you, I sorta regretted not applying to those that sent out invites early (Booth, Yale, Duke ED)...and now really stuck with nothing but a ding :roll: Wondering if I should start preparing R2 now...and I don't think my background will attract Wharton (non-finance/consulting, < median GMAT, low GPA), not sure why I even bother to apply to Wharton at the first place :P

Yes, you are right for R1. My figure was for the overall application season. As a result, it stands to reason that the figures for R1 are likely to be higher than 38% and the figures for the subsequent rounds (especially R3) are likely to be lower.

Is there any reasons to believe that they will get less apps in R1 or it is just a speculation?

It is the "usual" trend and take it with extreme caution. Most top schools report more R2 applications as most people are either giving their GMATs during R1 or are still polishing their applications so that once R2 timeframe hits, they are able to submit their apps. But then again, we will never know if adcoms at Wharton have actually a fixed number of invites or similar number of applications for R1 and R2 this year.
