yes correct, so by that logic the surpluses should be 1650*10% + 2050 *40% + 1240 * 8% ? this is still not matching with any of the options given

1650, 2050 and 1240 are 110%, 140% and 108%.
The excess i.e 10%, 40% and 8% needs to be calculated on 100%.

So you need to find the 100% amount of all 3 values. 1650/1.1 for ex.

Just search on Google with the first few words of the question and add gmat after it. Should get a result for most of the questions

(1) Last year, if the number of bottles of Brand Y sold had been 7 percent greater, the number of bottles of Brand X sold would be 60% of the number of bottles of Brand Y sold.
(2) Last year, 553,725 bottles of Brand X soft drink were sold.

Madelyn has $400 to spend on her new school clothes and this is to cover the price of the clothes she buys and the sales tax on those items. Does Madelyn have less than 50 dollars left after completing her shopping?

(1) The total price of Madelyn's clothes was less than $400.
(2) Madelyn incurs no sales tax when purchasing school clothes.
