Since there are 5 Xs, 3 Ys, 2 Vs, and 2 Ws, the ratio of the number of the squares labeled x or y to the number of the squares labeled v or w is 8 : 4 = 2 : 1.

Solution:

Step 1: Identify the total number of squares labeled x, y, v, & w separately as follows: The number of squares labeled x = 5 The number of squares labeled y = 3 The number of squares labeled v = 2 The number of squares labled w = 2

Step 2: The total number of squares altogether equals 12. Crosscheck that the sum of the total squares labeled x, y, v, & w in Step 1 equals 12. If that is not so, find out where you made a mistake and correct your error.

Step 3: The total number of squares labeled x or y = 5 + 3 = 8. Again, crosscheck that you’re right here by counting all the squares with x and y labels together. Also, the total number of squares labeled v or w = 2 + 2 = 4. Count the total number of squares with v and w labels to be sure you’re right.

Step 4: To obtain the ratio of the number of the squares labeled x or y to the number of squares labeled v or w, simply divide the number of squares labeled x or y by the number of squares labeled v or w as follows: 8/4 = 8: 4 = 2:1.

I found this easiest to calculate by writing x|y and v|w on my notepad, then adding a tally mark to the appropriate bucket as I encountered each letter.

x | y = 8 v | w = 4

8:4 = 2:1 (reduced)
