SUPERSARS
Some school applications ask for the names of other programs that the candidate is interested in applying to. What is the reasoning behind this? Do they want to know if you are applying to that school as a safety school?
I just found it very awkward - especially since it's entirely optional.
This is a very common question, and since it may impact your admission chances, we advise the following:
As a rule of thumb,
mention 2 other schools that are in the same sphere as the program you are applying to.
You don't want the adcom to think their school is a "reach" for you, or a "safety" school for you.
Some examples:
If you’re applying to LBS, mention INSEAD and Cambridge/Oxford.
If you’re applying to Columbia, mention NYU and maybe Wharton/Kellogg
If you’re applying to Kellogg, mention Booth and vice versa.
However, make sure you do not mention a school that is superior or inferior by far to the school you are applying to.
One more thing to keep in mind - schools may look at your GMAT score report to see which other schools you sent your scores to... so be honest!
