Find the value of Integer x?
1) x is the factor of product of first four positive integers
2) x has exactly 4 distinct factor
Source:
https://www.GMATinsight.com Statement 1: I almost missed the word 'factor' here and incorrectly assumed this was sufficient! But, x isn't necessarily the product of the first four positive integers; it's just a
factor of that product. Every positive integer (except for 1) will have at least two different factors, so x could definitely have at least two different values. This is
insufficient. I'm going to wait on doing the calculation until I've seen whether I need to...
Statement 2: x has 4 distinct factors. I'm not sure what numbers have 4 distinct factors, so I'm going to just start trying some numbers. I won't bother to try primes, because primes only have 2 factors, not 4.
x = 4: only 3 factors - 1, 2, and 4
x = 6: 4 factors! 1, 2, 3, and 6
x = 8: 4 factors as well! 1, 2, 4, and 8
Okay, x could be either 6 or 8, so this is
insufficient as well.
Statements 1 and 2Now it looks like I need to jot down the actual value of 1*2*3*4 for the first statement: x is a factor of
24. However, both 6 and 8 work for this statement, as well as for statement 2. Therefore, there are two different cases that both fit both of the statements, so the statements are still insufficient together.
The correct answer is
E.
