I'm in a bad spot here.
I applied to Duke Fuqua as a binding early admissions student - this was a mistake. I got in, so per the binding agreement, I'm required to go to Fuqua. However, I was fortunate to have been admitted to Michigan Ross with a half tuition scholarship. This is a huge amount of money that is difficult for me to turn down.
What are the repercussions if I don't fulfill Fuqua ED?
First, I’d just like to mention that I absolutely don’t condone applying in EA (especially when it’s binding) when it’s not your absolutely top choice. While schools definitely have a binding round to increase their yield, which is not a move I’m a fan of, applying in a round when you have greater chances of admittance and then not attending is not classy either!
Now to the crux of the matter.
If money is the only thing that's attracting you towards Ross and you’re indifferent about the schools, I'd recommend letting fuqua know about your scholarship. There is a good chance that they will increase your scholarship to maybe even match ross’ offer.
If there are other considerations as well (though, based on my research, I can say that both schools are very similar), then I'd suggest explaining your reasons to Fuqua.
Without going into the ethics of it, I've never seen Fuqua take any action against any candidate who didn't attend after getting admitted in the EA round.
Though, admittedly, there aren't many applicants who forgo their admission after getting in in EA!
Also, they will not force you to attend if you make it clear that Fuqua wasn’t your top choice. That's the biggest turn off for these schools.
I'm really not sure about the legal angle here, maybe someone else can provide better insights, but I really doubt that they'll pursue any such action against you. They really don’t need have anything to gain from such an action. It can even bring negative publicity their au! But that's just my opinion!
Good luck!
