I’ve gone over the thread but was unable to find an answer to Q1

Reg. Q2 Is that the official whiteboard that GMAC will use?

Q3&4 were mostly rhetoric! Want to understand all of your perspectives and if you see the merit in writing this version of the exam

MS2020
The only rational explanation I can think of for this behaviour from GMAC’s side is: They believe the online test provides the unfair advantage of one’s home-turf, and are thus tightening up the screws on every other aspect of the test so as to make it miserable and impossible.

I have some questions I hope some of you will Be able to clarify:
1) What happens if one loses internet connection mid way through?
2) Is GMAC going to release an official “trial” version of this whiteboard?
3) How is one to answer geometry questions without reproducing the image? and more importantly, how is one supposed to adapt to this new tool and figure out not just how to write but also how to draw on it?
4) Why do the scores come after 1 week? Why am I not allowed the chance to cancel them after viewing?
5) Not a question, just wanted to say that 200$ for this is really a joke

I was really looking forward to this from GMAC’s end but it looks like some of us have to proceed with past scores.

Most of these qs have been answered in previous posts. A link to the online scratchpad is also provided. Please go through earlier posts to find your answers.

I can’t answer qs 1 as no one has taken the GMAT online yet. However, I’ve taken the GRE online and with an online proctor usually you can connect back and the exam will start from where you left off. The proctor may not restart the exam till you’ve been checked and screened again. Same procedure they use before the exam starts and after the break. Expect many many technical glitches. ETS is way ahead on GMAC in innovation and Proctor U has been doing this for a while now, yet they had many glitches.

Regarding Qs2; someone PM me saying they tried the whiteboard online. I’ll get back to you on that as to how to download it. Sorry I’m away and typing on my mobile phone. I’ll PM you with the link if I can find one.

3. Regarding scores being released 1 week after, I think that’s a misunderstanding. GRE said the same thing but you will be able to view your score after the test. You just can’t download an unofficial score report. Just note it down or memorize it coz you won’t have a white board

I think the 7 days is to be able to see the score online. I think there is another check where a third person validates your video recording and looks for any wrong doing. Same happens in GRE where they take 10-15 days.

There are many underlying assumptions in what I said, but that’s my opinion and that’s how I anticipate GMAT to conduct this version of the exam. My only comparison is the GRE at home test, which I gave last week. There are a couple of debriefs available so go through them and your doubts mays get cleared.

Good luck!!!

In my limited view, GMAC may allow a scratchpad after the Friday's webinar due to low booking rates and a high number of complaints. I assume many people won't be willing to take the exam because not having a scratchpad is a significant disadvantage. Furthermore, with GRE being more flexible, my guess is that under high pressure GMAC may ease off. The only way to do that is hit them where it hurts - their wallet.

I also have the same feeling.
I was just checking their Twitter and IG account and there are plenty of comments criticizing their whiteboard policy. So they may reconsider it.

There is nothing in the rules prohibiting you from having an empty bucket underneath your computer desk.... I checked

I can’t imagine the craziness proctors must have experienced during these tests... Think about all the mental and emotional damage they experience.

In case you didn’t know this haha proctors change during your exam. I had about 3 rotations that I remember...

I’d say that they are fine, it’s the students that suffer really.

Is it possible the real reason they won't release scores immediately after the online exam is that GMAC knows people MAY struggle without a scratchpad (especially in the Quantitative section) and in 7 days will have a large enough sample size to possibly "curve" scores?

We should not forget to mention the optional break issue at the webinar. It is not as bad as the whiteboard issue, but still... I don't want to be doing RC and CR after 100 minutes non-stop

2 words: adult diapers. That way it's not awkward (keep in mind that the proctors are monitoring your audio through your computer's microphone), and they can't smell you, so who cares? Lol. ;)

On a more serious note, I've been thinking about it, and yes, the mouse-controlled OnVUE whiteboard is a joke, but at least you can use the text editor as well.

I think our best bet on the GMAT Online is to type the math and algebra out as text, in the same way that one might type out a GMAT Club question explanation. Using a mouse to hand-write is just unrealistic. Luckily, I've been typing out math explanations in plain text during my Skype sessions with private students for years (though I will admit that for the hardest questions I will often pivot to a hand-written explanation, matrix or geometry diagram). Thus, I think I'll probably just give up on drawing with the mouse / trackpad. Instead, I'll stick to the keyboard / mental math, and live with the results.

Marshall made the GRE and GMAT optional too.

I think with no GRE/GMAT and no recommendation req, Marshall is the easiest application process thus far

Makes you wanna wonder if this is just another strategy for top schools to boost their rankings and get as many application fee dollars as possible while already having selected an incoming class? I think people from waitlist stand a better shot than someone without any test scores.

Interesting. Marshall does not need LORs. They made GRE/GMAT optional but require TORFL.... And they have extended the deadline on the day of the deadline?

Hi Mcelroy,
I was curious and wanted to ask you if you found the GRE harder than the powerprep software or in genral. Esp the Quant section? A few of us found it to be incredibly harder than any mock or test prep qs pack out there. Infact harder than GMAT.

Do you think GRE made the section harder to offset any advantages from giving the exam from home? It would be great to get a Tutor's perspective.

Thank you!

With the standardized test waived, basically the entire application to Marshall’ can now be done by someone else without any involvement of the applicant. That’s a bit scary.

If it allows keyboard inputs that is a whole new world, then is easy to type almost everything but geometry, anyone knows if the inputs are automatically erased after each question?

I will give it a try, putting myself on GMAC feet I'm not sure if I would allow erasable boards, how could I standardise them? what about pens? I do think that if the questions are "adapted" it could feasible to have similar scores. Not sure if anywhere has been officially said that Online test percentiles will be adjusted with online test takers, but that would make some sense.

Regards,
Pablo
