Hi everyone, looking to get some feedback on my viability for an M7 MBA

I'm a medical doctor with 3 years experience but I have a very low GPA (both in undergrad and med school). I plan to sit GMAT by end of year and have a history of scoring well in standardized exams - if we were to presume a strong score (~740+) to offset my GPA how are my chances?
For whatever it may be worth, I have an MD from a top 50 medical school (as per QS university rankings)

Background: 33 year old caucasian male (Australian)
Undergraduate GPA: 2.95/4.0
Work experience: 3 years as a medical doctor at a large metro tertiary hospital in a major city in Australia - 1+ years as a front-line doctor in the COVID pandemic
Post MBA goals: entrepreneurship in biotech/pharma start-up or VC in a similar space
GMAT: yet to sit - aiming 740+
Leadership: teaching/mentoring of medical students and junior doctors

I'm ideally targeting H/S/W

Thanks for reading :)

Hi MRNA

Thank you for your post. Personal MBA Coach works with MDs every year and we can certainly talk with you about how we can best position your experience in the context of your applications.

Given your low GPAs, you will definitely want to ace the GMAT if you are targeting M7s like Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton. While securing a 740 should situate you well, a 760 would give you a competitive edge and really help you stand out from the crowd. Personal MBA Coach offers customized tutoring services with tutors who have scored in the 99th+ percentile and are graduates of MIT, Harvard, UPenn, Yale, Columbia and more. Most tutors have 780+ and even perfect scores.

Are you considering any other schools? I suggest widening your net, particularly given that competition is increasing and acceptance rates are falling lately (think 5 to 8 schools here).

If your long-term goal is VC, you're going to need a broad set of finance and valuation skills, so I would focus on adding some additional schools with strong finance programs: CBS, Booth, Stern and Anderson are all strong options.

Feel free to send an email to scott@personalmbacoach.com so we can further discuss your candidacy and application strategy. We would be happy to help set you up for success here!

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

Hi acehorse7 - I'm happy to share some thoughts with you about your profile. Your GMAT is great - congrats! - and will help offset what is a lower GPA for Harvard.

Congratulations, also, on two promotions - is that typical given the timeframe, or have you been promoted faster than your peers? Harvard wants candidates who can demonstrate leadership and impact at work, and can show that they are performing better than their peers (via your recommendations and perhaps your own examples).

HBS will also want to see leadership experience demonstrated in your extracurriculars. It's great that you are coaching tennis -- are there ways that you can demonstrate leadership? Is your work teaching finance to juniors still going on?

Your post-MBA goal seems well aligned with your experience, particularly in alternative investments. You will need to explain what impact you want to have, and what you're hoping an MBA from HBS will help you develop to get to those goals.

Are you applying to other schools? HBS is a stretch school for even the very best candidates. Although you do have a couple of things working in your favor, I think your overall chances will depend on your answers to the questions I've asked, and how well you are able to tell your story and connect the dots in your life (past, present, and future).

I hope this helps - best of luck to you!!

Hi acehorse7,

Thank you for your post. A 3.12 undergrad GPA is on the lower side so it is great to see that you have secured a strong GMAT score to help offset this.

As far as your experience, you have some strong elements here. Military experience is definitely appreciated and can help your application. The leadership experience you have is very hard to get in the corporate world and admissions committees appreciate that, particularly at a school like HBS that has a large emphasis on leadership.

Looking at your post-MBA goals, you will really want to think about how you will make your unique mark in PE. A lot will also come down to articulating your personal story, the area where we find our clients need the most guidance.

We have worked with a lot of folks from military backgrounds to help frame their experience in the context of their applications, as well as many with investment banking backgrounds. We would be happy to help set you up for success!

Do not hesitate to send a note to scott@personalmbacoach.com to further discuss your candidacy and application strategy.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

Hi mlee894 - I'm happy to share some thoughts on your profile. Your grades are great, but as you probably realize, your GMAT is somewhat below HBS' average. Have you tried taking the GMAT more than once? Do you think you could get a higher verbal score if you took it again?

Your work experience looks good - and five promotions seems great! Have you been promoted more quickly than your peers? Hopefully your recommenders will be able to speak to that. It will also be important to show the impact you've had at work, and ideally demonstrate leadership. You will also want to demonstrate leadership through your extracurriculars if possible -- are any of them still happening? HBS and other top schools will want to see ongoing leadership experience via your community involvement if possible.

And most important, I think you'll need to dive deeper into your future goals, the impact you want to have in the world and why, and how an MBA specifically from HBS will best help you get there. When you say you want to be an R&D strategy manager, would that also be in biotech? Would you need an MBA for that role? Do you have a longer term goal in mind?

I hope this is helpful - and best of luck to you!

Dear all,

I would really appreciate a feedback on my profile, as I come from a non-traditional background and don't have anyone in my field applying for MBAs normally.

Nationality: East Asian
Gender: Female
Age: 27
GMAT Score: 1st try with practice test 700, aiming for 740+ in official exam
Undergraduate degree in Organizational Development (US top 20 school, GPA 3.5)
Master degree in International Development (Europe, prestigious in the field, GPA around 3.4), thesis with field study in Africa for one month

Work Experience
- 3 years in international humanitarian organization (one year in headquarters as trainee, then promoted to staff with one year deployment in an African country working with conflict affected population on rights based advocacy and assistance, with breaks and paid leaves in-between- technically only 2 years of actual working time)
- 5 months now in medical NGO in Africa, changed to work on service design oriented community level innovation projects (what inspired me to pursue a MBA!)

Extra-Curricular
Undergrad: Founder of international student organization, Peer Adviser for global education office, global ambassador for admissions, dancers for annual performances of different cultural events, volunteer trips in Honduras, Florida, study abroad in two countries and capstone internship with UN agency
Grad: Improvisation workshop facilitator, Student Cabaret organizer
Professional: United nations intern advocacy committee for paid internship, staff association and decolonizing humanitarian aid initiative, speaker and mentor for NGO and youth organizations in home country promoting involvement in international affairs for youth

Short Term Goal
Consulting in public sector (government, non-profit, international organizaitons) leaning towards strategy and public health, preferably in developing countries

Long Term Goal
Senior management in international foundation, organization, or development bank with a network of private and public sector that can lead to better strategic direction for international aid

Target schools: HBS, CBS, Stern, SOM, Kellogg (MMM), IESE

As you can see I barely have any quant or business related studies or work experience. I understand in some cases this could give me an edge but also worry it might not fit the expectation. I am planning on getting a good GMAT and potentially taking some business online courses to compensate.

Thank you so much!

Best,
M

Hi MCMG - I really like your profile - I think your non-traditional background will definitely help differentiate you from other candidates. Schools want to put together cohorts with as much diversity on every dimension as possible, so I think your background and goals will work strongly in your favor.

You'll need to do a great job connecting all of the dots - explaining the impact you want to have and why, and how your background and an MBA from each specific school will best help you get there. In your case, your background is very much in line with your goals, and I also see how an MBA could really help you in the roles you want, so I think your dots may be easier to connect than for many. I urge you to really research each school, so you can explain very specifically how each program would be a great fit for you.

You're right that one weakness that stands out is your lack of demonstrated quantitative skills. Schools will want to make sure that you are set up to succeed, especially given their quantitative rigor. Getting a 740 GMAT score would certainly help, especially if your quant score is strong, and I really like your idea of taking one or more quant classes to demonstrate your readiness. I would urge you to take graded classes, so hopefully you could show good grades to demonstrate your quant proficiency.

I hope this is helpful and wish you all the best on your journey!!

Hi Alexanderdims,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with the stats, your undergrad GPA is good. However, your GMAT score is quite lower than the average required for HBS. I think you should retake your test and try to aim for 720+ to maximize your chances. On the work front, your work experience seems amazing, packed with leadership roles. You will need to bring all these together to craft an impactful story. Talking about your ECs and volunteering, they are unique and interesting. They are again bringing your leadership traits; therefore, your applications should represent a collaborative leader and a compassionate person. Every school does stress on this part, and so does Harvard.

Your post-MBA goals make sense. I guess there must be some motivation behind your goals, do speak about that. Make sure to include how MBA from Harvard will assist you in achieving your goals and your ambitions. Overall you have a good profile. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Harvard. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to enhance your application and maximize your chances for fall intake

Cheers!

Hi willnguyen2409,

Thank you for sharing your profile. You have a great GMAT score and a good undergrad GPA, so this part is pretty sorted. On the work front, your 4 years of work experience in finance must exhibit yourself as a high-performing individual. Adcoms want the applicant to be able to work effectively with others since it is a sign of future success. Business schools understand this and admit students who can learn from and cooperate with their peers. Your ECs sound good. Speaking about all these with the right passion would bring diversity to your apps. Your post-mba goals need more polishing. You may want to read an article on how to frame practical post-MBA goals essays, you will get some insights :)

Overall you have a good profile and have a shot at your targeted b-school. You will need to craft your essays in alignment with the school’s values. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi TheBIN4RY,

You have shared very few details about your profile. Your undergrad GPA is good, and a great GMAT score. On the work front, you didn’t share much. As you have worked in different startups, you must know how a business grows from ground zero. 4 years of startup experience can bring many good stories and a strong narrative for your application. For further evaluation, I would like to know more about your profile to guide you better. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the b-school. Hi, I am finalizing schools this weekend, please let me know your thoughts.

WE: Product/Tech Consulting, 3 years at time of attendance, 1 promotion.
Started and sold agri-tech company during college for high six figures.

Score: GMAT 770, 51Q, 49V.

EC: Good EC activities and leadership for 3 years now.

Undergrad: Top 10 school, Computer Engineering degree, 3.00 GPA (1 F freshman year, rising trajectory).

Should I apply to HBS? Haven’t considered it so far but multiple people have suggested.
