FROM HEC Paris Admissions Blog: The next step: HEC Paris Graduation 2014
Graduation is a day that is undoubtedly nerve-wracking. Falling over on stage, collecting the wrong diploma and being late for the ceremony are all scenarios that commonly play out in the minds of soon-to-be graduates. Not forgetting that our 2014 Graduation Ceremony was held on Friday 13th June, it’s easy to see why a few of our MBA Class of 2014 were more than a little nervous come the morning. As is usually the case, however, these fears were proven totally unfounded last Friday as our MBA Class of 2014 graduated without a hitch and with plenty of sunshine.

The day started early, with a welcome lunch buffet and cocktail held in the MBA building on campus. This was more than mere ceremony, as this the graduating class was the first to have their classes based in the newly designed building which opened September 2012, coinciding with the launch of the new curriculum. Indeed, this was a class of firsts: the first run for the new curriculum, the first appearance of the HEC Zebra at MBAT and the first Saint-Cyr seminar that resembled Noah’s Ark more than a mere field exercise.

For many of our graduating class, the graduation was a chance to be reunited with classmates for the first time since classes ended last December. A lot can change in 6 months; jobs have been found, promotions have been earned and babies have been born, and so the buffet was a perfect chance for students, friends and families to catch up before the formalities got underway.

The MBA ceremony was a nostalgic affair, with the Associate Dean of the MBA Program at HEC Paris Bernard Garrette, setting out to present the first ever “virtual” graduation ceremony via webcam in keeping with the presentation’s ‘Digital Transformation’ theme. He soon emerged on stage, however, reliving the highs and lows of the Class of 2014 before introducing the Class Patron and Chief Development Officer at Capgemini Group, Pierre-Yves Cros (HEC Paris MBA Class of 1984) to the stage. Cros spoke succinctly, sharing his secrets for success with the graduating class and advising them to listen to nothing but their own instinct: “If I had listened to my parents, my friends, my teachers… I would not be where I am today.”

With this advice in mind, our students were ready to collect their diplomas, making the transformation from HEC Paris MBA Students to HEC Paris MBA Alumni. Following the presentation of the Academic Awards to the students with the highest GPAs, each student was called up individually to collect their diploma on stage, to a chorus of applause and the occasionally shout of encouragement from the audience.

A class photo soon followed – including the obligatory “cap in the air” shot – as well as the grand ceremony for all graduates from every program at HEC Paris. Here they were addressed by the Dean of HEC Paris, Bernard Ramanantsoa and his distinguished guests, with the announcement of the Dean’s List 2014 celebrating the best and brightest from across the school, both in terms of leadership development and academic quality. Included on this list were MBA students Hamassala David Dicko, Malik Baudry, Julie Haspeslagh, Impreet Natt, Emilie Flanagan, Ashley Bienvenu, Jodi Neuman, Thomas Philbeck, Subajan Sivandran and Mark Thomas – Congratulations!

So with the end of the ceremony (and one final dance) came the end of the MBA at HEC Paris for our graduates. After a day charged with nostalgia, congratulations and goodbyes, feelings were decidedly mixed. Yamini Naik summed up the feelings of the class well; “I’m kind of both happy and sad about leaving HEC Paris. It’s been an amazing experience, but now after nearly 2 years I am ready to move on and I am excited about the future!”

Of course, this isn’t a goodbye for our graduates; as they now go on to play an important role as HEC Alumni within our global 50,000-strong network. While their role within the school may have changed, it is by no means diminished.

Best of luck to our graduates, stay in touch!

Hi LalaB!

Previous posts by fellow applicants suggest that the time duration varies from candidate to candidate. However, rest assured that you will get a reply within the 2 week timeline.

FROM HEC Paris Admissions Blog: Meet the Team: Lauranne Bardin
Lauranne recently joined the Development Team at HEC Paris MBA after 3 years at Columbia University in New York where she worked to develop new cooperation initiatives and dual degrees with French institutions. Added to her prior experience in the management of European programs in the Youth and Education fields, and it’s clear that Lauranne knows her way around the education system – both in France and abroad – making her the perfect advocate for our MBA program internationally. “I came to HEC Paris because I felt it was essential for me to find a position which will allow me to continue working for the promotion and development of global education programs,” she says, adding that her role as the Development Manager for North America (as well as the Part-time option in France) allowed her to maintain strong links with the United States.

As well as tying in her professional background, the Development Manager position at HEC Paris MBA appealed to Lauranne for reasons of sheer variety, as she is quick to point out there is no ‘standard work day’; “This is a strongly networked position at the best Business School in Europe…  The HEC MBA program brings students coming from a wide range of profiles and diverse backgrounds, which makes the experience so enriching as each and every candidate has a very unique profile.” On top of that, Lauranne is in constant contact with Alumni, corporate institutions and top academics across the globe.

It cannot be denied that Lauranne knows her stuff about the MBA Program, as her daily interaction with these people gives her an insight into what makes the most successful MBA student; what skills recruiters look for, what kind of students these Professors want to work with and what competencies help post-graduation. When asked what she looks for in an MBA candidate, she places the emphasis on communication and people skills, combined with a strong international profile; “The ideal MBA candidate needs to show high interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, while significant international exposure within past professional experiences and academic background is particularly valued at HEC.” Candidates shouldn’t shy away from emphasizing their international background or skillset during the applications process, either; “It is important to particularly highlight this aspect throughout the admission process and to show how your special professional and international experiences will contribute to the success of the classroom.”

As an expert of the MBA program, Lauranne is in high demand. If you are interested in meeting her, you can register for any of her upcoming events on our Development calendar. Some of these events include a tour of the North America in September, which will see Lauranne travel to Toronto, Boston, Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Vancouver, San Francisco and Los Angeles to attend MBA fairs and events organized with HEC Alumni. In the meantime, Lauranne will be organizing Part-time specific events throughout June and July including Breakfast Presentations, Negotiation Workshops and Virtual Information Sessions. Alternatively, you can sign up for a Drop-in session – a one-on-one conversation with one of our Development Managers – every Wednesday in Paris for individualized feedback on your MBA candidate profile.

So, does Lauranne have any advice for potential MBA candidates? Yes – do it! “At HEC Paris MBA, we work to prepare our candidates to become the future global leaders by offering them the chance to work and study alongside promising mid-level professionals from over 50 different countries. This is a real life changing experience!”

Few days ago I was honored to become a part of HEC community, or simply saying, I was admitted to HEC Paris MBA, and now I decided to share my story with a hope that it will be of some value for at least one person on this Earth :).

The more I read about this school, the more I understood that it is my destiny! :) You know, to find a right school is like to find a proper partner for a marriage, because in both cases you know that this decision is crucial and any wrongdoing may result in failure :) (for example- loose of $$$ hehe).

Very quickly I felt that for HEC culture and high ethic norms are pivotal and that there is a warm atmosphere there. Students, alumni, and staff members are very polite, enthusiastic and eager to lend a helping hand. I regard Michael Scott (development manager) as a real professional, and the way he communicated with me (his quick and precise responses, etc) made me understand that this school values high standards.

As for the application process and essays, I didn’t feel any problem with them. I read a lot of scary articles written by consulting companies that students should use their services in order to achieve success, but finally I decided to prepare my application on my own, because, let’s admit, no one knows me better than I am, and no one can devote his whole heart to write truly MY stories and thoughts. I wrote essays in two days :) and asked my close friend to check the content and grammar. This short period doesn’t mean that the quality doesn’t matter; rather, I intentionally discussed the hardest topics on my essays to reveal my potential.
Within a week after sending the application, I was informed that I was pre-selected (yay!)

Very quickly I received the information about the names of my interviewers, the way I had to contact with them (in my case it was Skype only), and deadlines. Taking into account my preferences, both interviewers appointed time very swiftly.

As for 10 mins presentation, I prepared a topic related to arts (showed pictures that I took in museums and streets, stated ideas/thoughts/feelings that stayed behind these pictures, etc) and used the same presentation in both interviews. By the way, some of art installations were totally mine. My advice is not to over complicate a topic choice and have at most 8-10 slides. Take it easy and prepare something that you are really interested in. The interviewers are open to hear any topic, and would like to see your passion re your choice.
Both interviewers asked me to begin with my presentation. The 1st interviewer kindly mentioned that I should not forget about 10 mins limit :). Both of them asked their questions only at the end of the presentation, and their questions were like why I chose this topic, what is the link between my topic and a business world, how art is connected to making business, which ideas mentioned by me can be useful for HEC community, etc.

Now about interviews :)

The 1st interview with alum was extremely comfortable. I don’t remember her asking me any question with a pitfall. Almost all questions were standard ones like Why MBA? Why HEC? Why now? etc.
Also she wanted to know whether I knew anything about the courses, the life in HEC, professors (I mentioned some of them on my essays), etc. She asked about my weaknesses/strengths and what I can bring to HEC community. All questions were meant to be answered in details and with examples. The interview was about 1 h or even longer, and went very smoothly. In the end I asked her few questions regarding courses and clubs. By the way, during the whole interview process she wrote something (I guess it was an assessment blank).

The 2nd interview was much harder and perhaps that’s why much more interesting :). The interviewer did his best to make me move from my comfortable zone and dug deeper to understand my personality. He didn’t write anything/read from a blank, and wanted to hear detailed answers. For example, he asked when exactly I decided to get MBA (in years).
He listened to me very carefully and even commented on my statements (sometimes he didn’t agree with me about some points, but on the other hand, we all have our own views:) ). He asked the same questions as did the first interviewer. Also he asked me the following -

- tell me about the most difficult time in your life and what lessons you learnt from this experience.
-tell me why HEC should choose you and what exactly you can bring to HEC society in terms of culture. What is unique in your experience and culture?
-Do you plan to be helpful for HEC after graduation? If yes, then in which way?
-tell me what you would do if a shareholder asks you to dig some dirt up on your boss
-are you a follower or a leader in a group? When I mentioned that I prefer to be leader, he asked why (again in detail) and what I will do if I am not chosen to be a leader.
- what exactly would you do if your group members feel tired and don’t want to work on a project, which is due in few hours?
-Did you come to HEC campus? Did you contact any alum/student of HEC? If yes, with whom did you speak and what you discussed.
And these are not the only questions :)

The interview along with my questions lasted for about 3 hours, but time went quickly (even though it wasn’t a walk in Heaven :) )
Overall, I guess both interviewers wanted to know my personality/inner world and whether I fit HEC.

After being informed that I was admitted, I wrote a thank you letter to both interviewers, and the 2nd one replied with kind words “Welcome to HEC family” :).

Great post Lala, I'll see you in the Fall as well! I totally agree with you that the application process was a breath of fresh air, and for someone wanting to pursue the biotech/pharma industry I found HEC Paris to be the ideal program because the length is sufficiently long to learn intermediate-level French (tons of biotechs/pharmas are headquartered in French-speaking Europe), an exceptional price-to-quality ratio, and I love the fact that it is somewhat remote yet so close to a major city - the perfect setting to develop tight bonds with classmates yet a short train away from a vibrant, international city.

Here's my brief application experience:

I met Ms. Alyssa Dominioni and Julia, an HEC full-time MBA alumnus, at a QSWorldTour in the US this past winter. Of all the booths I visited that day, Alyssa & Julia were the most sincere, sweet and genuine representatives I met. Alyssa put me into contact with a former partner of an HEC MBA student since I had a lot of questions about the partner experience (I arrive in the Fall with my wife). From there I completed the online assessment, which is a very cool tool to assess your chances of fit with the program prior to applying, and then I spoke with Mr. Luciano Rolon and Mr. Tony Somers for over one hour each by phone.

Luciano is a great guy, extremely friendly and has a good sense of humor; he's also an alumnus of the MBA program. Mr. Somers gave me a lot of great advice on how to best find the ideal job post-graduation (ie, learn French asap!). After speaking with them I spent quite a bit of time polishing my essays and was thrilled to receive the pre-selection email 10 days after submission.

My interviewers were exceptional as well, one was in person and the other via skype. The one in person was during a World Cup soccer match and we had an instant connection with soccer, Latin America and the World Cup, so from there the interview was more of a casual conversation (while checking the score of the game periodically, haha). I presented on a relevant topic in biotechnology since that is my field of interest. The 2nd interviewer was so helpful, we spent almost 2 hours talking. She gave me a lot of great advice about avenues to pursue once at HEC Paris (CEO speaker series, marketing classes/professors, specializations, etc). Overall I really got a great perspective from an alumnus from over a decade ago and from a recent graduate.

The wait for the final outcome was the hardest part, but I also received a call from Laurenne Bardin shortly after my final interview and she was so friendly and helpful. Finally, after gaining acceptance I called to speak with someone at Expansiel, the on-campus dorms, and the lady I spoke with was so incredibly sweet.

I can't wait to arrive in Paris with my wife later this summer and to embark on this new adventure in Jouy en Josas. Thanks again for sharing your story, Lala, I hope my story is helpful for someone too!

Hi guys,

First, congrats to all of you that have been accepted so far and good luck to all that have applied and are still waiting for a decision.

I plan to apply for the Sep '15 intake so hopefully I will meet some of you there.

For those of you who have already been through the admissions process, I have a question about the recommendation letters: how and when must they be submitted? I see no form on the HEC website, so I guess they will have to be signed, scanned and submitted together with the other documents or does HEC have a system like other schools where, somewhere in the application, you give the contact details of the recommenders and after that they will be contacted by HEC and have to send the recommendation letters by email?

Having this information in advance would help since I intend to inform my recommenders so that they don't have to spend extra time with these details.

Thanks!

Hello navrip. Since I have been through that phase I can shed light on your query. For the recommendation letters, you will have to go to the topapply page and from there you have to fill in the email address of the persons who will recommend you. They will receive a username and ID on their mail and from there they can send your recommendation letter to HEC. Make sure you do that well in advance in order to give ample time to your recommenders. Also, you have to inform them that you have applied at HEC and they will receive an email asking them for the recommendation. Hope that solves your query.

Hi navrip!

If by loc you mean Letter of Consent, then the answer is no. Here's the process along with some details shared by my referee:

1. Once you submit the Referee Details in your topapply form, the recommender will receive a login ID and password via email.
2. After logging into the referee account, your recommender will have to answer some questions about you (eg. your job profile, personal traits, strengths, weaknesses). Each of these responses will have a word limit just like your essays. The page is short and sweet and contains crystal clear instructions. The referee can login multiple number of times and complete the recommendation in parts.
3. Once your referee submits the online recommendation, its status will be updated in your topapply account and "Referee completed" will show "Yes" along with the "Date completed".
4. That's it. Once your recommendation is submitted your referee's role is complete. No need to bother him/her ever again (at least for HEC  ).

And you're welcome to ask as many questions as you want. We're there to help you out.

As mamacta said, make sure you discuss it with your referee and give them ample time to complete the recommendation.

Also check out this super helpful link about LORs:

All the best! Keep us posted.

FROM HEC Paris Admissions Blog: Negosim – Developing companies in a virtual world
“Congratulations! You have been appointed to manage a company. You start Wednesday.”

The opening words of Bernard Garrette’s introductory talk on Negosim– a computer-based business simulation exercise that MBA students take part in during their first few weeks at HEC Paris. Over the course of three days, students are placed into teams of 4 or 5, and then set about managing virtual companies that compete in international markets. The main objective? To create wealth for their virtual shareholders. During this short period of time, the teams will work through six quarters (eighteen months in real time), making six sets of important decisions. The students will be split into three different “universes”, comprising of ten firms, of different nationalities. As well as competing with their peers, students will face computer-simulated “local” competitors in their respective countries. What’s more, all firms operate in the same B2B industry: electronic devices.

Thrown into such fierce competition, you may be tempted to think that the best strategy would be to avoid contact with other teams at all costs. However, this is not the point of the exercise – in Negosim, companies not only compete, they co-operate. The teams will be expected to negotiate and sign outsourcing agreements, embark on joint-ventures, and form strategic alliances in order to progress and generate more wealth. The goal is to learn by doing. The teams have been purposefully selected so they are as diverse as possible – not only to simulate the real working environment of global businesses, but in order to create a wealth of different ideas. Students will progress by trial and error, putting into practice what they have only just begun to learn in the classroom, as MBA student and Negosim participant Vivek Goli says, it’s “a practice ground before we hit the real battleground.”

Guys from Sep batch .Can you advise what insurance you took? any suggestions ?
Hi Ashkul!

Here's what you need to keep in mind while applying for insurance:

1. Health Insurance

EUROPEAN PARTICIPANTS

Participants registered for health insurance in their native country are required to submit a photocopy of their European Health Insurance card to Student services, or to purchase their own personal health insurance coverage from a private company.

NON-EUROPEAN PARTICIPANTS

Non-European participants under 28 years old, staying in France for more than 3 months, come under the French Social Security health plan and must register for their health coverage. The annual fee of € 213 for 2014/2015 will be paid through HEC during the check-in and orientation weeks. Students register with either the SMEREP or the LMDE, the two student social security centers in France available at HEC.

Non-European participants over 28 years old must purchase their own personal health insurance coverage from a private company or apply for “Couverture Maladie Universelle” (CMU) in France (proof of 2012 and 2013 income resources are required).

2. Personal Insurance
Participants must subscribe to a complementary insurance policy during their studies in France (even if you are doing an internship, exchange or double degree). It should cover you under the following risks:

a. Civil liability (in case of damages to a third party)
b. Individual accidents (if you are injured in an accident and are disabled)
c. Repatriation assistance (If you are injured in an accident during curricular or extracurricular activities in France or abroad)
d. Medical expenses abroad (should you be injured or ill during travels or academic internships abroad, this insurance acts in addition to the reimbursement of whichever system of social protection is in place)

My 2 cents:
Normally (b),(c) and (d) are can be covered together through a Student Overseas Mediclaim Policy and you have to apply for Civil Liability (a) cover separately. I would advise that you ask your insurer whether they can provide insurance covering the above 4 clauses.

In my case, I took and Overseas Mediclaim Policy from an Indian insurer and then purchased the Civil Liability cover from France. Don't worry if you can't find a good civil liability cover in your country. You can purchase it here after you arrive at HEC (Price: 14 Euros approx). You'll be having around 2-3 weeks to do so.

FROM HEC Paris Admissions Blog: The Best of Both Worlds: Working and Studying with the Part-time MBA
The Part-time MBA option presents professionals with the unique opportunity to carry out their MBA studies while allowing them to minimize time away from the workplace. Spending just one week per month on campus allows participants to learn in class one week and then directly apply the skills they gained at work the next. By working and studying concurrently, Part-time students gain instantly applicable knowledge – a benefit both for themselves and for their employers. As owner of his own asset management firm, Mathieu Dessallien decided to pursue the Part-time option to gain valuable business skills to progress his career.

“Studying at HEC Paris will not only give me a diploma, it teaches me these competencies.”

One of the most frequently mentioned benefits of studying Part-time is the opportunity to mix with students from diverse professional backgrounds: from lawyers, to entrepreneurs, and even classical musicians – the diversity of the classes offers a variety of professional perspectives. The range of nationalities in each intake is equally beneficial for developing a global outlook: by working and collaborating with peers from different countries and cultural backgrounds, students develop a truly international perspective – a key skill needed in today’s diverse world of business. The program presents students with the opportunity to learn, expand their corporate network, enhance their leadership skills, all while allowing them to maintain a balance between their work and personal lives. Alongside her Part-time coursework, Flore Fesquet is looking into the possibility of starting her own firm.

“The Part-time option was good for me because it gave me the time to look into that [starting a firm] at the same time as studying, and it’s something I’m still considering.”

If there’s anything to be learned from the Part-time participants it’s that one mold does not fit all. Studying Part-time allows students both the flexibility and the time needed to develop a personalized plan to progress their careers.
