Short Description of my Profile.
Working in a Leading Public Sector Unit(BHEL) in Engineering Dept (design, development of traction machines for indian Railways). for 5.5 years,
Worked in a leading Steel Company(Tata Steel) in Maintenance of mining equipment for 1.5 years
Academics: GPA 7.63/10, B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela.
GMAT Score: 680 (Q49, V32, IR 7 & AWA 5)

How suitable is my profile for EPGP, IIM Indore, PGDM(GM), XLRI or Full Time MBA, NUS.

Probably my GMAT score is not on par with Average at IIM ABC or ISB. So, kindly suggest what target should I set for these institutes.

Hi Neeraj,

Your work ex looks good.
GMAT score is bit average and will make A,B,C tough given the competition.
ISB, XLRI, Indore and NUS are possible. For NUS try to apply in October as they have rolling admissions and it becomes tougher to get an interview call if you apply late.
For IIM's, consider retaking GMAT by Oct mid. In that case, target NUS by Oct end, IIM A by nov mid, IIM B by Dec 5 and then ISB ( R2). You will have to skip IIMC in this case ( given its deadline) unless you can really handle essays and GMAT prep together.

Feel free to contact us for any queries.

This response is a bit dated but hoping it is still valid as given the timelines here you would be applying around now. Your profile is excellent overall, and if you have achieved a 680+ on the GMAT, you should have a good chance at all the schools (A/B/C/I) you mention.

Your profile looks has a technical bend and doesn't seem to be suited for a B school application with the data given below. The WHY MBA also needs polishing up. On the brighter side, you have the requisite experience and international exposure which will be beneficial in the overall process. As iterated multiple times in this forum, GMAT score is only 1 of the many requirements, IIM ABCL give out interview call to overall holistic profiles. GMAT ranges from 650-750 usually.

How true is this, Are people with extensive tech backgrounds considered 'unattractive' to B schools?

Sounds disappointing :hurt: , does that means that such people need a 'not so tech-heavy' role to increase their scope for B schools?

The whole point is that you are applying for a "B school" and not a "Tech School". Unless you show some business acumen and an inclination towards leadership why would a B school take you in ?

On the other hand, I am not discouraging or discounting on your capabilities in any way. However, the way you have presented your profile, it will stand little chance of being selected. You should look towards highlighting your achievements in a way that exemplifies more non technical aspects. Simply deciding to "do away with tech roles" is a statement to throw your chances away.

Your profile looks great and the international work-ex will only work in your favor. The average GMAT in all the IIM's is around 700. But a 680 won't make or break your case. Give it a shot next year and you have a pretty good chance of making it. All the best.

Hello iamnitin

You have just mentioned your Acads, Industry and Expected GMAT. This info is too little to give a meaningful feedback.
ISB/IIM are interested in assessing your candidature holistically.
This includes-
1. Academic Potential- To judge whether you will be a good addition to the program and will be able to handle the academic pressure. Your acads and expected GMAT looks slightly below average, so you will have to compensate by having strengths in other areas to stand a fighting chance. (mentioned below)
2. Work Ex- More than your number of years and industry, they are interested in the quality of work ex. What has been you career progress, what are your major accomplishments? Without this info it is difficult to say anything.
3. Diversity- Automobile background can get you some brownie points, but it will depend on your overall work history. I've worked with several people from Maruti and they have gone to do well in theri career post ISB/IIMB- but you will need to show the AdCom why you deserve an admit.
4. Clarity of Goals- This factor alone is the most important and can make or break your chances. What is your compelling reason to do an MBA after 9 years in the industry? What are your post-MBA goals. If your expectations are not realistic, AdCom will not be interested to meet you. So again, no info to make any comments.

On a side note, if you are planning to take the GMAT in Aug, when are you planning to apply are R1 deadlines are early Sep and may not give you enough time to focus on a quality application.

Best.

I really like your confidence (in a good way). 760 will really add a lot of weight to you profile.
2. Work Ex- More than your number of years and industry, they are interested in the quality of work ex. What has been you career progress, what are your major accomplishments? Without this info it is difficult to say anything.1. Worked as an EDP Manager in a small firm and opted for MBA after 02 years of experience. Completed 04 Major projects by my own, details I can share if required. If I am understanding this right- you're targeting a 2nd MBA. That will make things slightly trickier as you should be prepared to give a compelling reason as to not just Why MBA byt Why 2nd MBA? Other achievements mentioned will have to be fleshed out really well in your Essays
2. In my second Job , got 50% hike in 03 months due to my performance. Completed 01 Major project within timelines. Good. But why did you get the hike? I'm sure there is a great story hidden behind it. ISB/IIM is more interested in that story than the percent hike you received.
3. Became Team Lead in last three years work. Working as Senior Management in IT. I have details of many projects, which I have completed and received appreciations/certificates from the organisation.
That's interesting. How did you fare compared to your peers?
3. Diversity- Automobile background can get you some brownie points, but it will depend on your overall work history. I've worked with several people from Maruti and they have gone to do well in theri career post ISB/IIMB- but you will need to show the AdCom why you deserve an admit.Noted !!!!

Think more on these lines. If you have done so well in your career all these years, why can't you reach a decision making level if you continue on the same path. Why do you need an MBA? How will it specifically help? Especially when you already have done an MBA in the past

Thanks Varun for Promptly giving me feedback on my details. More details are mentioned in the response for more guidance.

Also if possible, please suggest how much time I need to make an quality application and how I can make it ? It will be agreat help, if you will help me to prepare for my dream. Thanks

How much time is needed is a very subjective question and will depend on each individual. If you are very clear with your Post-MBA goals it should be easier and faster. But if you are still figuring those out, it could take a lot of time to produce a good application. If you wish to have discuss this in detail feel free to call me on the undersigned
