Hi everyone,
I have been thinking of applying to IVEY for next year’s MBA batch. I had got my profile assessment done where I have been found a good fit to the program. I, however, have a few questions as far as post MBA job options are concerned since I have around 8 years of experience which is relatively higher than that of the typical IVEY MBA class.
I have spent 8 years in Automotive Industry doing Sales and Marketing/ Capability building and Strategy. I will be looking for roles where I can use my experience both in terms of profile magnitude and compensation. On the basis of this, I have a few questions-
1. I believe that consulting firms prefer lesser experience (around 5 years) since they offer entry-level consulting roles. Will my Industry experience be a hindrance or it will be seen positively as far as the move to consulting is concerned?
2. Other than consulting, I am really interested to change Industry and function and target Strategy/Digital Marketing/Product Management. However, approx 70% of the batch is placed in Consulting/Finance. Does this mean that there are limited opportunities at IVEY as far as Strategy/Digital Marketing/Product Management are concerned?
3. I am currently part of the leadership development program in my organization and understand the opportunities of being one. Which of the companies hire for their Leadership Program at IVEY and what kind of experience do they look at?
Don't think the experience band would be too much of a roadblock. I received my admit a couple of weeks ago, and I have close to 8 years of work ex in sales and business across industries. Largely in the SaaS domain.
1) Not completely true. Ivey, with its higher average age - the folks head out as Senior Consultants as compared to Consultants from schools like Rotman. If you've stuck with the automobile industry for 8 years, with a lot of domain expertise - I don't see how that would be a blocker at all.
2) A HUGE chunk of the class change 1/3 pieces (Industry, Domain, Location). I know alums in startups in sales, and in places like GM in business and operations. So IMO that wouldn't be a limiting factor as well. You can tailor your opportunities as you wish. The college has a great standing and warrants a lot of conversations from alums, or directly as well.
3) Leadership roles are very subjective IMO. 8 years of experience in another domain and country, will translate to much lesser when you move geographies and industries. Leadership at startups/mid size orgs is different from leadership at a new project at Deloitte/PwC etc. Highly doubt companies will come in hiring for leadership roles fresh of the boat. But Ivey should leave you in good stead with respect to setting the platform to reach there in a few years.
Hope this answers your questions?
