Thus, the new fuel efficiency standard should be supported precisely because they discourage the manufacture of full-size cars.

McBride’s and Leggett’s statements commit them to disagreeing about the truth of which one of the following?

a.The manufacture of full-size cars should be discouraged.

b. Fuel conservation is less important than safety in the event of a collision.

c. When a full-size car and a subcompact car collide, the occupants of the full-size car are less likely than the occupants of the subcompact car to the seriously injured.

d. Reducing the number of full-size cars on the highway will reduce the frequency of collisions between automobiles.

e. The new fuel-efficiency standards will encourage automobile manufacturers to build more subcompact cars.

OA Soon. With Ans, please mention the type of question (for e.g. assumption, strengthen etc.)

I must admit the argument is not that difficult to comprehen its the stem and strong paraphrase of the answers that is making it more difficult.

Ok , I do not know whether my answer is right or wrong , but i will analyse the argument.

Argument says that manufacture of the full size cars are deemed to decline because of the new fuel efficiency regulations. Than, two persons discuss the implication of this law with respect to the safety of the passengers.
Mac says the full size cars help the passengers to protect them from accident involving sub compact and full size cars.
Legett says Its the full size cars that is responsible for the accident

Mac commits himself to the fact that full size cars are not a threat for the safety of its own passengers, infact it helps them. But it nowhere commits that it is dangerous for the passengers of the other cars.

Legget commits himself to the fact that full size cars are the cause for the accidents.

But both does not seem to discuss about the central issue ie decrease in the manufacture of full size cars with the reduction in fuel efficiency.
I did not find any answer to be close but ended up selecting E

Consider Kudos if my post helps!!!

The answer is A.

McBride says when talking about the possibility of the manufacture of full size cars being discouraged, "This prospect is troubling...." . Thus it implies that McBride does want the manufacture of full size cars to be discouraged.

On the other hand Leggett says on the same prospect, "new fuel efficiency standard should be supported precisely because they discourage the manufacture of full-size cars". Thus this implies that Leggett wants the manufacture of full size cars to be discouraged.

So McBride and Leggett differ on whether the manufacture of full size cars should be discouraged or not.

I think this question may be classified as an Inference question because we can infer from the statements of McBride and Leggett what they mean and disagree upon.

IMO :- C

Option B :- Neither MB nor LG say that fuel conservation is more important than safety, infact both agree that safety is more important - not correct
Option E :- for the sake of argument lets consider there are only 2 types of cars, full size and subcompact. Both MB and LG agree that fuel standards will discourage one type of car so we can infer that they both agree that fuel standards will encourage other type of car - not correct
Option D :- Both MB and LG are concerned with the seriousness of a collision not with number of collisions - not correct

IMO, the question asks about a choice which is true and which is a point of disagreement between MB and LG
Option A :- Although both MB and LG disagree on the whether manufacture of full size cars should be discouraged, it cannot be true.

Option C :- In collision between Full size and sub compact, people in Full size are safer than people in subcompact. This statement is true and also the statements of MB and LG seem to disagree on this point.

Dear Archit,

We are looking exactly for what they disagree upon and they disagree upon whether the manufacture of full size cars should be discouraged or not.

I do not see any special connotation for the word "truth" in the question. Whether you disagree on a statement or on the truth of that statement it is the same.

Hi Sarvana
Legget disagrees upon the fact that Full sized cars manufacturers be encouraged
Mcbirdie agrees that manufacturers be encouraged ie..he disagrees that manufacturers be discouraged ....what option A says...Hence A cannot be the right answer as it is exactly what Mcbirdie disagree upon......but it is opposit of what legget disagrees upon.
...so how can the answer be A

Dear Archit,

Statement: Manufacture of full size cars should be discouraged

McBride says "NO" to this statement

Leggett says "YES" to this statement

So aren't they disagreeing on the statement?

Hi sravana
i thnk i misunderstood the stem....I was thinking that we need to find an answer that shows the disagreement to each's thought...but actually we need to find a statements that highlights the point to which each disagrees upon...

May this question rest in peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McBride: The proposed new fuel efficiency standards, if implemented, will
discourage the manufacture of full-size cars. This prospect is troubling because
when a subcompact and a full-size car collide, the people in the subcompact
are more likely to be seriously injured than if theirs had also been a full-size car.
The new fuel efficiency standards should therefore be opposed.

Leggett: But whenever any two cars collide, it is more likely that someone
will be seriously injured if one of the cars is a full-size car than if neither of the
cars is full-size. Thus, the new fuel efficiency standards should be supported
precisely because they discourage the manufacture of full-size cars.

McBride’s and Leggett’s statements commit them to disagreeing about the
truth of which one of the following?

(A) The manufacture of full-size cars should be discouraged.
(B) Fuel conservation is less important than safety in the event of a
collision.
(C) When a full-size car and a subcompact car collide, the occupants of the
full-size car are less likely than the occupants of the subcompact car to
the seriously injured.
(D) Reducing the number of full-size cars on the highway will reduce the
frequency of collisions between automobiles.
(E) The new fuel-efficiency standards will encourage automobile
manufacturers to build more subcompact cars.

We should find the option to which both of them disagree right ?
I am not able to get the question stem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
you are right that we have to infer the stand of two from their statement..
lets look at the choices..

(A) The manufacture of full-size cars should be discouraged.
we can see from the coloured portion that Mcbride is disturbed on the prospect of manufacture of full-size cars being hampered whereas legget proposes that the new legislation should be accepted to discourage manufacture of full-size car. OPPOSING VIEWS... Correct
(B) Fuel conservation is less important than safety in the event of a
collision.
Cannot be said clearly as both lay emphasis on safety
(C) When a full-size car and a subcompact car collide, the occupants of the
full-size car are less likely than the occupants of the subcompact car to
the seriously injured.
Both agree on this point
(D) Reducing the number of full-size cars on the highway will reduce the
frequency of collisions between automobiles.
out of scope
(E) The new fuel-efficiency standards will encourage automobile
manufacturers to build more subcompact cars.
Both agree on this point..
ans A
Hope it helped

First I went with B. Looks pretty straight forward.

After reading the question again "Leggett" never talks about Fuel conservation or safety.

McBride says the manufacture of full size cars to be discouraged.

On the other hand Leggett says on the same prospect, "new fuel efficiency standard should be supported precisely because they discourage the manufacture of full-size cars".

The answer is A.

Correct A. One says the manufacture of full-size cars should be discouraged, and the other one says otherwise.
B. not mentioned in either statement
C. They both agree on this
