Hi,
I'm a French 4th year BBA student on the double degree between a top 10 European B-School (non-french) and a top 3 Hong Kong Uni.
My GPA in the B-school is 8,3/10 and in HK is 3,2/4.
I got a gmat score of 710.
I did one Audit internship in a Big 4 (in HK), one Transaction Services internship in another Big 4 (in France) and one Private Equity internship in a Luxembourg Investment Fund.
I was in one of the university sport team in Hong Kong (2022-2023).
Target job: Investment Banking / Private Equity.
My target school are:
HEC, ESSEC, ESCP, INSEAD, LBS, LSE, NUS

Do you think I've got a chance of getting in or is it going to be complicated ?

👋 Hey kingu,

Here is a detailed profile evaluation for you:

Your Strengths:

👉 Double Degree Program 🎓: Studying in both a top European B-School and a top Hong Kong University is unique. It shows you're globally-oriented and adaptable.

👉 Strong GMAT Score 📚: A 710 is a competitive score, especially for your target schools.

Relevant Internships 🏢:

👉 Audit Internship in HK: Demonstrates your analytical skills and your ability to work in a demanding environment.

👉 Transaction Services in France: Further showcases your hands-on experience in finance.
Private Equity in Luxembourg: This is a great boost given your career goals in Investment Banking or PE.

👉 Athletic Involvement 🏐: Being part of a sports team indicates teamwork, discipline, and commitment.

Areas of improvements:

👉 GPA: Your GPA is decent but might be slightly on the lower side for some ultra-competitive schools. However, your GMAT and work experience can help offset this.

👉 Work Experience: While your internships are valuable, some schools (like INSEAD) appreciate a bit more full-time work experience.

Your Chances at Target Schools:

👉 HEC, LBS, INSEAD: These are very competitive schools. Your profile is strong, but they also look at leadership, extracurriculars, and international exposure. Focus on your essays and recommendations to stand out. 🌍🏆

👉 ESSEC, ESCP, LSE, NUS: You have a good shot at these schools given your profile. Your international exposure, GMAT score, and internships should be highlighted. 🎉

Key Tips for Application:

👉 Narrative: Link your double degree, internships, and sports involvement to create a narrative on why you're interested in Investment Banking/PE. 📝

👉 Recommendations: Get strong letters from your internships that highlight your achievements and potential. 💌

👉 Essays: Focus on your career goals, and how the target school's MBA program will help you achieve them. Dive deep into the school's curriculum and culture. 📘

In Conclusion:

You've got a solid chance! While some schools will be competitive, your unique background and strong GMAT score make you a compelling applicant. Remember, it's not just about the stats but how you present your story.

MiM Profile Evaluations [Master Thread]: Post all Profiles Here [#permalink]
Hi all! I would love your input on my chances of admission to the INSEAD, HEC and Bocconi.

Background and Undergrad
21, Female, Eastern Europe

Currently pursuing a double degree:
- top5 University in the UK - BSc Psychology (current grade: 80%/4.0 GPA)
- a new university, unlisted - BSc Business (current grade: 89%/4.0 GPA)
I have been living in 3 countries outside of my home country for the past 3 years while pursuing those degrees.

GMAT
I have not taken the official test yet but have been scoring around 700 on practice tests and am continuing to practice.

Work experience and leadership
- student entry role and a mentoring program mentee at MBB (with a specialisation in sustainability)
- part-time role as a project mentor in an international education startup with a focus on sustainability for the past 2 years (Mentoring students developing their social projects in 20 countries)
- Summer internship at an automotive company in ESG Reporting
- 3 social projects focusing on sustainability/community created in affiliation with the university (I was responsible for UX Design)
- currently working on an education startup with an award for the best technological startup at a pre-seed startup conference

Post Master goals
I would like to enter the sustainability side of business, potentially in ESG Reporting or maybe consulting.

I would love to hear your thoughts about my chances of getting into those schools and about any other schools I believe I should consider. Thank you!

👋 Hey esteeFF,

Here is a detailed profile evaluation for you:

Your Strengths:

Strong Academic Background 📚: Pursuing double degrees, especially one from a top 5 UK University, showcases your dedication and academic prowess. Having grades at 80% and 89% respectively is commendable.

International Experience 🌍: Living in 3 different countries in such a short span is impressive. It shows adaptability and a global perspective, both highly valued by top business schools.

Work Experience 💼:

👉 MBB Involvement: Even in a student entry role, association with MBB is a big plus, and your focus on sustainability aligns with global business trends.
👉 Part-time Role: Mentoring in an education startup focusing on sustainability adds depth to your profile, especially mentoring students across 20 countries.
👉 Summer Internship: ESG Reporting is niche and aligns with your post-MBA goals.
👉 Entrepreneurial Spirit 🚀: Working on a startup and gaining recognition at a pre-seed startup conference is a great achievement. B-schools value this entrepreneurial mindset.
👉 Social Initiatives & Leadership 🌱: Creating 3 university-affiliated projects and focusing on UX design showcases creativity, initiative, and leadership.

Areas for improvement:

GMAT: Your practice scores are promising, but it's essential to target a 720+ for schools like INSEAD and HEC to strengthen your application.

Work Experience: While varied, it leans towards internships and part-time roles. Highlighting the impact you've made can help offset the relative brevity.

Your Chances at Target Schools:

INSEAD: It's one of the most competitive schools globally. Your international exposure and sustainability focus are pluses. Work on getting a high GMAT score and stellar essays. 🌍🏆

HEC Paris: A good fit given your profile. Your academic background, international experience, and startup involvement align with what HEC looks for. Aim for a compelling narrative in your application. 🎉

Bocconi: With your grades and diverse background, you stand a strong chance. Your focus on sustainability and the entrepreneurial spirit will resonate well with Bocconi's ethos. 🇮🇹

Recommendations for other schools:

ESSEC: Given its strong reputation in Europe and focus on sustainability.
Warwick, LSE: Given your UK connection and its strength in entrepreneurship and consulting.

In Conclusion:
You have a rich and varied profile with a clear passion for sustainability. To further boost your chances:

👉 GMAT: Aim for a score above 720.
👉 Essays & Recommendations: Emphasize your achievements, international experience, and dedication to sustainability.
👉 Interviews: Be ready to discuss your passion for sustainability in business and your entrepreneurial journey.

With a solid application, your chances are bright!

1.Would help to know which country, since the schools would encourage diversity. In other words, students from under-represented countries face less competition than from those with over-represented demographics.

I have been living in 3 countries outside of my home country for the past 3 years while pursuing those degrees.

2. While only ONE of the double degrees will really be counted, it is important to be able to talk about your pursuance of a double degree in your story, and highlight your exceptional academic calibre this demonstrates.
3. The exposure that can only come through living in 3 countries OUTISDE of your own, gives you a unique strength; don't forget to capitalize on that in your application.

4. Important for you to target higher scores for more rewarding results, not just in terms of higher admissions likelihood, but also better chances at scholarships.
5. Also, practice tests of different brands are of different complexities. Important for you to check how much does the 700 on your brand translates into a real score.

As already explained above, the goals work very well. However, it will be key
7. to articulate how your goals align with your past and demonstrated evidence of your passion
8. to show the maturity and clarity on your goals ahead.

Chance of getting in? Most definitely YES.
Your GMAT score however is on the lower side, and will need add-ons AND a compelling storyline to demonstrate your suitability for IB & PE, and by extension, to the schools you talk about.
So, two important suggestions:
1. Consider your Career Goals well; either modify them to align with your profile, or show WHY would these stats attract a PE/IB recruiter post your Masters (Hint: These stats would NOT)
2. Apart from considering retake in the GMAT to improve your scores, can also plan to strengthen other parts of your application with factors that will help you overcompensate the lower GMAT.

Hi everyone, could I ask for a profile evaluation for LBS GMiM program? Thanks!

Background:
I'm a 21 year old man from Indonesia. Did A-Levels in Malaysia, Uni in London

Undergrad Information:
I've just graduated this year with a first-class degree in MEng Mechanical Engineering in Imperial College London. Particular areas of specialization include: Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Machine Learning, Sustainable Energy.

GMAT/GRE:
Have not taken it, but expecting about 750+

Work experience:

1. 3 months summer internship in a design and manufacturing company.

2. Currently working at a multinational construction engineering consultancy in Bristol as a graduate engineer. I've been working for about 3 months so far, main reason for working here is to learn more about sustainability and carbon emissions.

Extracurricular:

1. Secretary for Malaysian Society, big society of 200+ members, with quite a large amount of sponsorship money

Post Master Goals:

A bit of a unique one, my family has a decently large manufacturing business back home, and I am planning to join the business once I've completed this masters (if accepted). Not to brag, but the expectation is for me to take over at some point.

I believe I have clear short term and long term goals, which I would be able to explain well in essays/interviews. A big reason for taking a business masters is to integrate my engineering education with business knowledge to achieve these goals. I've not worked in the business, since I want to gain experience working abroad in technical roles, but I would say I have decent knowledge of the operations and the industry.

Would like to know if this is an advantage or disadvantage for the application, and whether this is something to highlight or avoid. Most applicants I've seen are aiming to go to finance/consulting, so would like to hear any opinions about this.

Anything else?:

Another big reason for choosing this programme is the 1 year in Shanghai in the second year. I am interested in learning more about business in China. I've had experience visiting companies in China in similar industries to the family business, and I would be able to contribute some insights and perspectives in interviews/essays.

cmsanjata,

Your rationale overall seems alright. While it's true many transition into consulting/ finance/ tech, staying true to your goals can help you ascertain if this is the right next step, and also have authentic essays and interviews.

A candidate going back to entrepreneurship/family-business is less uncertain/ risky from the B-school's perspective, so in my view, it isn't a red-flag, as long as the professional arc is clearly mapped out i.e. past experiences, transferable skills, skill-set gaps and why & how MiM fits in. The other equally important part is 'why now' i.e. the opportunity cost of investing in an MiM vs in the business.

👉 ACCA Progression: Completing a significant portion of the ACCA papers adds value, demonstrating your commitment and expertise in finance. 💼

🏏 Extracurricular Activities:
👉 Diverse Interests: Your background as a Guinness record holder, a district-level cricketer, and a winner at an International MUN conference demonstrates a well-rounded personality. 🌟
👉 Leadership Roles: Holding captaincy and secretary positions shows leadership skills, a critical aspect for management programs. 👨‍💼

🎯 Career Aspirations:
👉 Finance and Investment Banking: Your career goals align well with your academic background and internships, making a strong case for your chosen programs. 🏦

📈 Recommendations for Improvement:
👉 GMAT Improvement: Consider retaking the GMAT to push the score closer to or above the 700 mark, which is more aligned with the average scores of students at LSE and LBS. 📝
👉 Further Internships: Additional internships or projects in finance or investment banking can strengthen your practical exposure. 🌐

🏫 Target Programs Suitability:
👉 Global Masters in Management (LSE): Your academic background and internships make you a suitable candidate, but a higher GMAT score could enhance your chances. 📈
👉 Masters in Management (LSE & LBS): Both programs are competitive. Your diverse extracurriculars and leadership roles add significant value. A slightly higher GMAT would be beneficial. 🏆

Overall, your profile is quite competitive for the programs at LSE and LBS. You bring a strong academic background, relevant work experience, and a dynamic extracurricular profile. Focusing on a slightly higher GMAT score and continuous engagement with the finance sector will further bolster your application.

With a solid application, your chances are bright!

Srijay, some thoughts on your profile:

1. Acads are good, given your undergrad pedigree and CGPA. The GMAT score is a bit on the lower side, particularly considering the Indian Male Perspective. Looking at 10-20 points above your target program's average would be ideal.

2. Work-ex (internship) sounds interesting, particularly the Goldman brand. What were your other internships in? Linking your past (academic and professional) experiences to your career goals, and identifying how the MiM (and specific program) fills in the gaps would be important to have a strong narrative.

3. ECs offer decent talking points for essays. Any more recent ones? Would suggest highlighting the key skills you picked up from these activities, and how these would translate to your journey in/ post MiM.

Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Background and nationality: From the UK (speak Spanish fluently and French at a conversational level), currently doing a year abroad - so I've completed 2 years of my degree and will be applying for masters in September 2024.

Undergrad Information: BSc Economics undergrad from a target/top uni (think UCL, Warwick). Got 69% in my first year but due to personal problems got a 53% in my second year (I have mitigating circumstances at my uni for second year grades). So my two year average is about ~3.3 GPA, which I'm worried will be a problem.

GMAT/GRE: Did my GMAT over the summer and got 740, I have time to re-do it, but I'm not sure I could score much higher, so is it worth it?

Work experience and leadership: Two internships at start-ups within business and finance. Summer internship in IBD in London and planning to do another internship in London during summer 2024. I had an executive position at my unis consulting society.

Community and others: Very involved in voluneer programs for two NGOs.

Post Master goals: Would like to work in finance/consulting within Europe. My dream would be to attend HEC, however, I'm interested in HSG, SSE, IE, LBS, INSEAD and some of the other European masters (open to suggestions).

I'd really like to get a bit of an idea of what my chances are for getting into these programs and where I should target. My main concern is GPA as my second year results are quite bad regardless of my mitigating circumstances.

Thank you.

Hello Srijay,

Apologies for the delayed response but we hope this finds you in time still.

You have a number of talking points in your profile; if presented in compelling manner, you will have a good chance of making it to your target schools; the GMAT is the weak link, though. We would recommend that you work towards boosting your GMAT score; a higher GMAT score together with a strong overall application will give you a good chance at making it to your target schools.

All the best!

Hi guys, I’m planning to apply for masters this year (2024 intake), target programs are LBS MFA, MIT Msc Finance, Oxford MFE, LSE Msc Finance and Imperial Msc Finance. Specifically interested if it worth to apply to MIT and Oxford, given my profile

Nationality - Azerbaijan
22 years old

Undergrad - Bachelor of Finance from top university in my country, graduated in 2023. GPA 97/100

Haven’t taken GMAT yet but expect 700-720+

Worked in Audit in EY during last year of my bachelor’s. After graduation got into Deal Advisory Valuation in KPMG (which is top destination in finance career as there are no invest.banks in my country) and now working here.

From extracullars - have volunteered in international soccer tournament, have been selected and participated in program organized by one of the largest local companies (included case competition etc.). Now taking part in the CFA Research Challenge.

Also have ACCA FA and FR, CFA Level 1 ( above 90th percentile), IELTS 8.

Hey Murad1122,

Your profile is commendable with a high GPA from a top university in Azerbaijan. Your expected GMAT score of 700-720+ aligns well with the requirements of these top-tier institutions. The fact that you have worked in Audit at EY and are currently in Deal Advisory Valuation at KPMG adds significant value to your profile, demonstrating practical experience in finance.

Your extracurricular activities, like volunteering at an international soccer tournament and participating in a program organized by a major local company, showcase your teamwork and leadership skills. Participation in the CFA Research Challenge is particularly noteworthy as it is directly relevant to your field of study. Having ACCA FA and FR qualifications, along with a CFA Level 1 certification with an impressive percentile, further strengthens your application, evidencing your commitment to finance and your analytical abilities.

To enhance your application, I recommend focusing on the following:

- First, ensure your GMAT score aligns with or exceeds the average scores of admitted students at your target schools.
- Second, in your application essays and interviews, articulate clearly how these programs align with your career goals, especially given the absence of investment banks in your country.
- Highlight how your experiences at EY and KPMG have prepared you for advanced studies in finance.
- Lastly, consider obtaining recommendations from supervisors or mentors who can vouch for your skills and achievements.

Given your strong profile, Oxford (MFE), LBS (MFA), and LSE (MSc Fin), seems worthwhile. Considering MIT, it may be a stretch due to a competitive pool and extremely low acceptance rate, but you still vouch for it.

For a higher chance of acceptance, target a mix of 6-8 schools. You can also look at Chicago Booth, HEC Paris, Rotman, and INSEAD.
