HI jxav,

A Q38 and a Q41 are fairly similar performances, which means that you treated those two Quant sections in the same general way (you do certain things consistently well, but you also make certain consistent mistakes). To raise this type of score to a Q49+, you have to make sure that you have all of the necessary knowledge (formulas, rules, etc.), strong basic math 'ability' (you can do calculations by hand, manipulate equations algebraically, etc.) and proper critical thinking skills (Tactics, pattern-matching ability, knowing more than 1 way to answer a question).

There's some question as to whether a 'book heavy' approach will be enough to get you to that level or not. Even the best books are limited in what they can teach you; they also can't force you to approach questions in a certain way and their explanations are often one-sided. This is meant to say that you might need more than just a book (or multiple books) to achieve that goal.

1) What is your overall goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hey, thanks for the reply, to answer your questions:

1. I aim to get around 690-730
2. Will take the exam within a month from now
3. Planning to apply straightaway after my exam if I got a satisfactory score
4. Ideally I would like to get admitted to Said or Judge, but it will be 5th or 6th round by the time. (I wonder if applying on later rounds will have an effect on the decisions).

Since 1 month isnt that much of time, I hired a tutor for my verbal and since then i've much improved understanding on how it works so I'll be worry more about the quant.

Yeah, I realized that I need to master the concepts of each topics to the point that I can solve the problem no matter how GMAT twist the questions, but I wonder what will be the most effective ways are. Will doing difficult OG questions and do CAT once a week to track my progress good enough?

Hi there,

I'm new to this GMAT club and I just took a GMAT official test with little preparation to see on which level I am and scores a meager 530 (38Q and 23V) on 28 february, since then I read the 5 Manhattan prep Quant books and just took MGMAT free CAT (under exact exam conditions) and scored 580 (41Q and 30V). I realizes that a lot of difficult GMAT quant questions are a mixture of fundamentals, concept and understanding the questions itself.

My target score for Quant is around 49-50, I wonder if someone can give me suggestions on what kind of practice or quant books I should have in order to improve.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Mgmat tests are one of toughest CATs for gmat esp quantitative portion. Take those questions for learning the concepts and practicing the stress on Exam day. Go through remaining Mgmat books as well as they are the best to brush basics.
Don't forget to analyze the test completely.
Thanks for the reply!

I think the quant sections are definitely tougher compared to the ones from GMAC, I heard from a lot of people that MGMAT quant scores tend to be lower than the ones from GMAC themselves, is it true?

Hi jxav,

I have a few questions about how you took these CATs:

1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you plan to take your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?

Unfortunately, the goal to raise your current scores to a 690+ will likely take more than 1 month to achieve (it will likely take at least another 2 months of consistent, guided study to get to that level). Beyond that issue, unless you have a really strong OVERALL profile, applying to School during these later application Rounds might be difficult. There will certainly be fewer "spots" available and you'll be in competition with a large pool of "wait-listed" applicants. This is all meant to say that giving yourself more time to study for the GMAT and applying for Round 1/2 next cycle might be in your best overall interest. Remember that the REAL goal is to get into your first-choice School - and 'rushing' to try to make an application deadline (and submitting an application that is not as good as it could be) is counter to that goal.

I took those CAT at home but at an exact time and conditions for real exam (2 8-minute breaks). I'm doing the AWA and IR too with no repeating questions at all.

Regarding your opinion on applying on later rounds is very helpful to me, I dont believe my profile is exceptional, I have only 2 years of WE but my performances have been pretty solid to the point each of my superiors on different companies are willing to give me professional references (I'm only 23 this year btw). Considering the competition though, realistically im kinda short of meeting the requirement except to cover it with above average GMAT scores.

Hi jxav,

Test Day is a rather specific 'event' - the details are specific and they matter, so you have to train as best as you can for all of them. The more realistic you can make your CATs, the more likely the score results are to be accurate. The more you deviate, the more "inflated" your scores can become. As such, as you continue to study, you have to make sure that you're taking your CATs in as realistic a fashion as possible. Taking your CATs at home is NOT realistic, so you should plan to take your future CATs at some exterior location (a library, office space, etc.).

Have you looked at the detailed analysis of the questions you got wrong. For example, in my case, i tend to miss out checking a few extra points in DS which leads to a trap answer. So although the question maybe a lower difficulty one, 'cause of the careless error, you may end up getting it wrong!

Hi jxav,

No worries!
You can surely hit at least 49 or above just like 90% of our students as long as you follow our study guide properly. It will take 2-3 months to hit your target score.

Please note that mock test scores may tend to be higher than actual GMAT scores and we don't recommend for our members to solely rely on mock test scores.

Based on your mock test score, it seems like you lack basic math skills. If you are weak in basic math skills, your PS won’t be good. If your PS isn't good, you will have hard time in forming equations in DS. So, your DS may not be good. Hence, it is very crucial for you to build solid basic math skills first, which you can learn from Math Review, a part of our course package. After that, we highly recommend learning our world's first unique approaches. Since GMAT takers are busy for their work and don't have enough time to study, you don't need to learn all about general math skills including the ones that don't appear on actual exam.
We teach 'must-know' math skills that are required for GMAT math. We don't teach something else.

With our unique approaches of Variable approach for DS and IVY approach for PS, you can significantly save time, and will have 10 minutes to spare on exam.

For instance, with our approaches, you can solve questions that normally take 4 minutes in 1 minutes and 30 seconds, and 2-minute question in 30 seconds.
Also, You can solve DS questions 100% with Variable approach and 30-40% of PS questions with IVY approach.

If you would like to try our approaches, Please try Trial Pack (4 hour lesson) that reveal our secret approaches of DS+PS core theory that you have never seen. You can test whether you like them or not before you enroll.

Additionally, the below is a useful article featured in GMAT Club for your reference. This will be helpful for you. You can see what sort of questions you might encounter on actual GMAT.

That's actually a lot of improvement in a very short period of time! I'd advise you to stick with a more limited set of resources for now, and then take another GMATPrep after a few weeks.
