Hello Gnpth,

I want to use the Error Log, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about it. Could you please help me with the instructions/how to use it?

Thank you.

Guys, I have uploaded the newer version of the log. The updates includes,

1. More sources including OG 2017.
2. More Tweaks on the formulas.
3. Mock Test Sources.

Hi Gnpth,

Thank you so much for the log. It looks really promising. One thing I added to my version of the log is the source question number so that it helps me to get back to source question at any point of time in the preparation, even after few days.

The above thing was an easy thing (I just inserted an additional column :P). However, it would more helpful if you can also give timing stats against question type and topics just like the ability and accuracy stats.

If these 2 points make sense to you, you can add these updates along with others in your next version.

Once again, thanks a lot!

Cheers!

Not sure. Nobody reported it yet. What version of Excel do you use?

where should I put questions of combination?

I was thinking of Sets or others.

I just did the Free GMAT Diagnostic Test and I am putting the questions there.

Thanks for the error log

You need to use counting as your area and sub-area should either combination or permutation.

This is good improvement suggestion. I will see the feasibility of adding timer inbuilt to the new update version. So that we can get the timing stats.

GMATCLUB Members,

I have put together a new Error for preparing for the GMAT. It is a simple excel based error log. The main difference from other error logs is that you can calculate your ability for each topic.

How to calculate weights/Difficulty level: To find the accurate ability for each section, it is really necessary to put correct weights for each questions. Sample way to enter the weights for the questions.

I have segregated the questions based on following,

Easy(500 Level)- 2
Medium(600 level)-4
Hard(700+Level)- 6.

In many test prep companies online question banks- the questions are segregated with the difficulty level. So you can use that measure to enter the weight in the Log.

If you are using GMATclub forum to answer the questions- You can find out the difficulty level of the questions using "tags" or more appropriately use the GMATclub timer feature. Since it gives the difficulty level questions based on the attempts.

If you are using OG Online tool to practice- The questions are segregated using the difficulty level as well. So use that feature to enter the weight.

Now about the log.

Ability to answer 700+ level questions gets your high score on the GMAT. The ability is also mentioned in the ESR. So, I felt it is good to have an error log to calculate our ability as a main measure instead of accuracy.

Attachment:
Error_Log_Ability_Accuracy.xlsx

This error log focuses on that aspect.

In egmat workshop i got the formula sheet which was used to calculate the ability on that workshop questions. So i used that logic to make this error log. Thanks Egmat!! :-D

Also the scholaranium of egmat uses this ability for the questions. Give it a try.

Below are the screenshots from this error log.

Please use the error log if you feel it will help you in your preparation. Thanks.

Gnpth - this might be a silly question, but do you recommend logging all of your questions right or wrong? After all, is called an "error log" so I thought it was worth clarifying.

Thanks,

Hi there,

Thanks very much for building this error log tracker.

I'm just starting to use an Error Log as part of my studies, and I just want to confirm that using yours I should basically be entering all questions I'm going through, whether I got them right or wrong? So in essence, the tool would be more than just an "error" log, right?

Should I also use an actual "error" log on the side, or just filter the 0s when wanting to understand where it is I struggle?

Last thing: I see the column to reference the source, but not column to reference the actual question # or the page where this question is. Is it on purpose? Or should I use column A to enter in the question # based on the source?

Thanks again!

Hi there,

Thanks very much for building this error log tracker.

So in essence, the tool would be more than just an "error" log, right? - GNPTH Answer- This is not just to mark 0's and 1's. You need to do get into data analysis mode to find your errors. I do a pareto chart based on my ability on the topics to improve the process of my problem solving skill.

Should I also use an actual "error" log on the side, or just filter the 0s when wanting to understand where it is I struggle? - GNPTH answer- You should use it regularly. I use it weekly to see where I need focus more based on my previous week attempts.

Last thing: I see the column to reference the source, but not column to reference the actual question # or the page where this question is. Is it on purpose? Or should I use column A to enter in the question # based on the source? GNPTH answer- You can put the source question #. Logically it makes sense to go back to that question in the source.

Thanks again!

Hey Gnpth - thanks for the recommendation. I've been tracking every question the last few weeks (right or wrong) and the data are starting to show me some insights I otherwise wouldn't have found if only logging wrong answers.

One question for you - and for any ther GMAT Clubber for that matter - are you aware of where I might be able to find a table listing out each OG question by type and subtype? I would like to build a function into the error log that would auto-populate this data each time I add a new question.

Thanks for the consideration.

Thank you so much for this log. After hearing from so many people about the importance of an error log, I think this is going to help me pretty well.
I have doubt though. How is the ability and accuracy measured here? On what basis? Can you please explain?
Thanking you in advance! :-)

Ability is calculated based how many tough questions you can get correct. For example- If you get 70% in 600 level questions and more than 90% in 500+ level questions then you have better chances of retaining your score in 600 level. So

Accuracy- Just % out of how many questions you got correct vs attempted.

Ability is an important factor here. If you can get at least 60- 70% ability in 700+ questions and more than 85% ability in 500 & 600+ question. You can expect your scores to range from 650 to 700. So simply, more your ability % for difficult questions, the higher you can expect the score but provided you don't make mistakes in easy and medium level questions.
