Like Mr. X and Mr. Y, you will write in gmat club forum.
This will write is not only attributed to "you"; it (will write) is also attributed to Mr X. and Mr. Y
So, will write MUST be matched with Mr. X and Mr. Y, otherwise the sentence will be faulty construction.
The verb report MUST be matched with "humans and other warm-blooded animals". Do, do you think that the verb report goes with "warm-blooded animals"? Is it possible to report by "warm-blooded animals". How "warm-blooded animals" report in real life?
Are you saying sentence is incorrect because Animals do not possess the ability to report ?
As mentioned earlier, you approach to tackle this sentence is incorrect Yes, Researchers modifying Human and animals is incorrect ...but not for the reason you are assuming
Like X and Y, researchers report that Z has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range. -- here also Researchers modifying X n Y is incorrect ...Intent is to compare X and Y to Z not Researchers ...not Reports .... not X's or Y's ability to report
I hope you understand the flaw in the below sentence:
Like Men and Women, researchers report that mice has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.

"Researchers" doesn't modify anything here. I did not assume anything in my comment.

Yes, if x, y, z indicate
"human", "warm-blooded animals", and "lotus" respectively (according to correct choice D).
But, according to choice A---> "x and y" is going to be compared with "researchers", here.

Do you think that this sentence is wrong (apart from official question; on the basis of "comparison part")?

--> Yes and No both. I just want to say that you can easily cross out choice A by seeing the word
report, which doesn't match with "warm-blooded animals" (
Animals do not possess the ability to report). That's it. You can cross one choice by several way. I just used one way in my above explanation.
Quote:
A. Like humans and other warm-blooded animals, researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.
--> In this choice, the author mistakenly compare "humans and other warm-blooded animals" with "researchers". So, you can cross it this way.
--> Another way: the word
report doesn't go with "warm-blooded animals". So, you can cross it by this way, too.
Quote:
D. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.
--> This is the correct choice. Here the whole thing is compare between "lotus " job and "humans and other warm-blooded animals" job.
