A. Like humans and other warm-blooded animals, researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.
>> X = humans and other warm-blooded animals and Y = researchers, are compared. Nonsensical.
B. Researchers report that within a narrow range, the lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperature likehumans and other warm-blooded animals do.
>> like is used to compare nouns, not clauses.
C. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans and other warm-blooded animals can.
>> ...lotus has...ability....as humans......can => parallelism issue. Also, 'of keeping' is wrong here, better is 'to keep' (VAN rule)
D. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.
>> X, as Y => correct idiom
E. As humans and other warm-blooded animals can, researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperature in a narrow range.

This questions fundamentally tests 'as' vs 'like' comparison concept.
(A) WRONG because 'researchers' follow 'Like humans and other warm-blooded animals' .
(B) WRONG because 'like' is followed by clause. Also, 'within a narrow range' i snot positioned correctly.
(C) WRONG because 'ability of' is unidiomatic
(D) Correct.
(E) Same comparison error as in (A)

Only A, C and D can be negated by using the idiom ABILITY TO.

Option B has error of the usage of like following a clause.

Hi sivasanjeev,

Thank you for your question. Since the entire sentence is underlined, let's go through each answer on its own to figure out what the problems are:

A. Like humans and other warm-blooded animals, researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.

The problem with A is that the modifier is placed next to "researchers," suggesting that the researchers are "like humans and other warm-blooded animals," which is ridiculous. This isn't true - the modifier is supposed to apply to "the lotus." Therefore, this is INCORRECT.

B. Researchers report that within a narrow range, the lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperature like humans and other warm-blooded animals do.

This phrase "within a narrow range" applies to the temperature, NOT the research or the lotus. Therefore, we have another misplaced modifier which makes this INCORRECT.

C. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans and other warm-blooded animals can.

This one is close to correct, but uses the wrong idiom "ability of" instead of "ability to." Therefore, it is INCORRECT.

D. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.

This answer is CORRECT because all modifiers are placed correctly with their antecedent, and there are no idiomatic problems.

E. As humans and other warm-blooded animals can, researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperature in a narrow range.

This answer is INCORRECT for the same reason as answer A - the misplaced modifier suggests the researchers are not human or warm-blooded animals (which is untrue and ridiculous). It also uses the wrong idiom "ability of" instead of "ability to."

Though I got the correct answer (D)

Why is (D) written as " ...... as do humans and other warm-blooded animals" and not "...... as humans and other warm-blooded animals do"?

Here's an OG question on a similar concept and the answer is (B)

More than 30 years ago, Dr. Barbara McClintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can "jump," as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.

(B) like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another
(C) as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others
(E) as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other

A quick way would be to know ability of vs ability to

Ability of is incorrect.

A,C,E are out.

Like is not followed by a verb when used for comparison, hence B is incorrect.

B. Researchers report that within a narrow range, the lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperature like humans and other warm-blooded animals do.

IMO use of like here is right as like is followed by a clause. Ability of lotus is compares with the same ability of humans and other warm blooded animals. This option is wrong because of meaning change with the wrong placement of " within a narrow range"

Experts, plz clarify my understanding on the use of like in the option.

But, Option B has an "ability to" present in it.

Are we not removing B because lotus has an ability to keep temperature like humans and other warm-blooded animals do.

It should be "as" rather than a "like" to compare actions.

Kindly correct me if i am wrong.

Experts... egmat GMATNinja EMPOWERgmatVerbal MartyTargetTestPrep is it correct to eliminate A,C,D solely on the basis I've highlighted below?

A. Like humans and other warm-blooded animals, researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.
C. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans and other warm-blooded animals can.
D. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.
Must be either plural "lotuses have" or "the lotus has" but NOT "lotus has" without the article. If singular, must be "its temperature" instead of "its temperatures." Also errors in the comparisons "like/as."

B. Researchers report that within a narrow range, the lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperature like humans and other warm-blooded animals do.
"like" used incorrectly to compare actions instead of "as"
"to keep its temperature" is nonsensical, it needs a description like "keep its temperature stable"

E. As humans and other warm-blooded animals can, researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperature in a narrow range.
Correct SV Agreement and use of "as" comparison.

A. Like humans and other warm-blooded animals, researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.

The modifier issue is clearly an issue. "lotus has" could be OK. "it's temperatures" is probably wrong, but is not a strong decision point.

Quote:
C. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans and other warm-blooded animals can.

The decision points that you have highlighted are not that strong.

A stronger decision point in that version is "lotus has ... as humans ... can." "has" and "can" do not work together logically.

Also, "has the remarkable ability of keeping" does not make sense.

Quote:

This answer is correct. So, those weak decision points got you into trouble.

The "as' construction is correct. "As" is used in comparing clauses. "lotus has ... as do humans" or "lotus has as humans have" or "lotus has as humans do."

Quote:

Those are strong decision points.

Quote:
E. As humans and other warm-blooded animals can, researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperature in a narrow range.
Correct SV Agreement and use of "as" comparison.

Don't let the correct SV agreement and correct use of "as" fool you. "As humans ... can ... the lotus has" is illogical.

look at choice C.
"can" in choice C is wrong because there is no "can" or "could" in the preceding clause.
I want to repeat what Ron said

if there is a form of to be in the second clause, the preceding clause need a form of to be
if there is did, do in the second clause, the preceding clause need an action verb
if there is a helping verb in the second clause, the preceding clause need the same helping verb ,which possibly in different tenses.
