Hi 2AND,

I understand how you feel. I too don't like questions that test idioms. However, there are some structures that are more commonly tested than others, and this is one of them. We must be able to take a call on ability of + ing vs. ability to + (plain form of the verb).

Hi Abhishek

You seem to have misread option (D). It nowhere talks about humans or animals "reporting".

Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.

The above sentence means that as per researchers' reports, lotus can keep its temperatures to a narrow range. Humans and other warm blooded animals also possess this ability to keep their temperatures to a narrow range. Hence, lotuses are being compared with humans and other warm blooded animals, in their specific ability to keep their temperatures within a narrow range. Thus, this comparison is perfectly correct.

Hope this helps.

The question that I faced in mba.com has a different option D.

Researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperature within a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.

Bunuel : Can I provide screenshot of mba.com official practice questions or against the rule?

Regards,
Arup

That could be other version of the question. You can post the screenshot if you want.

Like in (D), "lotus" followed by the verb "has" is being compared to "do", a verb, followed by the noun "humans and warm blooded animals. Switch in the form of both entities of which comes first. Can we really switch them? Although (D) is the best choice.

Hello GMATNinja, egmat

Like humans and other warm-blooded animals, researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.

A. Like humans and other warm-blooded animals, researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures in a narrow range.
misplaced modifier --> 'Like humans and other warm-blooded animals' should modify lotus
B. Researchers report that within a narrow range, the lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperature like humans and other warm-blooded animals do.
Incorrect comparison between 'Humans and other warm-blooded animals' and 'ability of lotus'
C. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans and other warm-blooded animals can.
Usage of 'can' at the end of the sentence, 'can' is not a verb and should rather be replaced by 'do' which is typically used for duplicating verb
D. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.
Correct usage of 'do' which acts as verb for 'humans and other warm-blooded animals'
E. As humans and other warm-blooded animals can, researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperature in a narrow range.
misplaced modifier --> 'Like humans and other warm-blooded animals' should modify lotus
Usage of 'can' at the end of the sentence, 'can' is not a verb and should rather be replaced by 'do' which is typically used for duplicating verb

Please let me know if any of my analysis is incorrect.

Furthermore, a generic question:
Even if I don't know the subtleties of idom usage, can I still score decent in SC?

Thanks a lot in advance!

This incidentally reminded me that "ability to" is listed as the first idiom in the (very limited but relevant) idiom list presented in our book EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana .

If you or someone is interested, PM me your email-id; I can mail the idioms section.

lotus has the remarkable ability...as do humans....

I have a question regarding the ellipsis of this question .... I think the ellipsis of (C) and (D) are both wrong and I have read your book and how you covered ellipsis. For ellipsis the parts deducted need to be presented on the preceding clause "as is".

C. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans and other warm-blooded animals can (keep their temperatures to a narrow range)

"Keep" and "their" not stated "as is" - so wrong use of ellipsis, no?

D. Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as do humans and other warm-blooded animals.

D means - Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability to keep its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans and other warm-blooded animals do = (keep their temperatures to a narrow range)

"their" not stated "as is" - so wrong use of ellipsis, no?

I do not want to take out an option just because of idioms, what other error is there in C? GMATNinja can you please help?

The idiom ABILITY TO is probably one of the easiest ways to choose D over C. Another thing you can try, is cut out the second part of the C.

Researchers report that lotus has the remarkable ability of keeping its temperatures to a narrow range, as humans can.

Thanks for trusting our book for your GMAT Preparation. Hope you found it useful.

Could you perhaps PM me the part of the book where the need for the preceding clause to be "as is" is mentioned?

Generally, if there is a "verb tense" change after the comparison operator, we need to explicitly mention the verb after the comparison operator, with the correct tense.

In other cases, there is no strict requirement for every word to be present "as is". For example, following would be correct:

Mike runs faster than his siblings.

Notice that the implied verb (after "his siblings") is "run", while the actual verb present in the sentence is "runs". But this is not a problem.
