I would go with C on this one.

Scientists previously realized something - 1st event (Use of past perfect with 'they had')
Now they found new piece of evidence demonstrating a more direct relationship - 2nd event (Use of simple past tense with 'have found')

A and B are out for modifier reasons.

E doesn't have a comma preceding which

D than that which had been is wordy; not clear who realizes previously;

Even though 'they' in C is technically pointing to multiple plural parties, the most logical is scientist. Pronoun ambiguity is something one should see at the last after eliminating using other options.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

As written, this sentence implies that a partially preserved dinosaur tail was shopping at a market. This sort of confusion is a common problem we should look for when a sentence begins with an -fog verb. In this case, we need to change the wording so that the subjects who were actually shopping—scientists—directly follow that phrase.
This means that we can eliminate choices (A) and (B), so now we are choosing between (C), (D), and (E).
When we read them all, we see that (C) is the clearest and most straightforward.

The correct answer is Choice (C).
