Everybody here wants a high GMAT score, but have you ever asked yourself: ” What is the smartest way to obtain it? ”
In my view smartest means efficient, so how can I improve my score efficiently?
Smart=>Efficient=>Less work
But first: how GMAT ranks your performance? Your score is based on percentiles, the percentage of test takers you have outperformed.
ie: 50 Q means that in this section you’ve done better than 93% of the test takers.
In the GMAT “improve you score efficiently” translates into “lesser percentile to climb”.
And here’s where this software helps you: it shows every possible combination (Q,V) to achieve your target score, and the percentile climb required to achieve it.
You can choose the strategy that more fits you in terms of skills and efficiency and plan your study accordingly.
Which strategy would you adopt? They are in reverse order of efficiency.
OVERALL ANALYSIS
The GMAT loves VERBAL
All the scores from 47 to 51 are contained in the last 99 percentile, so just one question right could make a +1 point difference.
If you have little time, just focus on this section, even a small improvement is highly rewarded by the GMAT algorithm.
To make this clear, I wanna use an example: from 40,30 to 750. In this scenario there is a 30 point gap between the V-Strategy and the Q-Strategy!
Overall the Verbal Strategy is likely to be the most efficient one, and this is the reason why.
Balance and strenght points
The balanced strategies are in most cases a good compromise. Unless you plan to get a V51 (pretty rare) my advise to you is to
split your study almost evenly ( the appropriare ratio can be determined case by case). On the other hand if there is a huge gap
between your Q and V percentiles, my advise becomes: focus on your strenght points (doesn't matter if quant or verbal!)
Example: from 48, 31 to 700. In this scenario there is almost no difference between tha all Q-Strategy and the all V one.
It's up to you to choose.
Finally, don't expect any shortcut! There is no special combination that will give your dream score without any work!

EXAMPLE of how the program works: You are currently at 620 (Q44, V32) and you wanna reach 720, insert the data in the program your Q V score and your target (720). Those are some of the results:

TAKEAWAY from the example: The strategy that focuses almost all on quant is not efficient, you see that as the score become more balanced, the gap to overcome goes down. The best one focuses primarily only verbal ( your Q score doesn’t change) – if you are fine with this pick this way – otherwise a balanced study plan is the second best option. Now you know how to plan your study. |
HOW to use the program: 1)Insert your current Q V scores and the TARGET where indicated 2)Press CALCULATE! 3)The software doesn’t work for tot score <400, V<20 and Q<27. The Q V scores that you insert are considered as the min value: the program won't give you combination with lesser score than the ones you've indicated. 4)This is the first version of the software, I wrote it overnight so there could be some glitches. Some data may seem odd, this is caused by the fact that the same Q V score can correspond to a different overall score. I compiled the table by looking at the scores on the internet, and during the years the relationship Percentile-Score has changed. (Don’t worry, those changes are minimal so the validity of the results is not affected) 5)This software requires Java only if you do not download the .exe version, if you don’t have Java here it is. |
