Hi Sancharey

Greetings! Your background in journalism and digital marketing brings a unique flavor to the MBA candidate pool. Let's dive into an assessment of your profile:

- On the academic front, you have performed consistently well. With your targeted schools in mind, we suggest aiming for a GMAT score of 680+. Your extra-curricular activities are impressive and show initiative, particularly your role as a founding member of your college's creative writing society.

- Being in the field of digital marketing and journalism provides an interesting mix of creative and strategic elements. However, we'd like to know more about your career goals post-MBA. How does an MBA align with these goals, given your unique professional background?

- You have diverse work experience, including strategy writing at the Election Commission and content strategy at TCS. Highlight the transferable skills acquired from these roles in your application. Nevertheless, be prepared to address questions on your shift from journalism to digital marketing.

- Lastly, your volunteering experience with Make a Difference showcases your commitment to community service, a trait many top business schools value.

- Your immediate task would be preparing for the GMAT. Subsequently, your application needs to paint a coherent story connecting your past experiences, the MBA degree, and your future goals. Consider why you are interested in ISB, SPJIMR, and IIMs specifically - how do their programs align with your career aspirations? This will again connect with your post-MBA goals. We would suggest that you restrict yourself to ISB and the IIMs (A,B,C).

We hope this gives you valuable insights into your MBA application journey. Feel free to reach out for further queries or assistance. Best of luck!

Hi,
Looking for help with profile evaluation

Age - 24 years
Work Experience - 2 years of software engineering experience.
Organization - Publicis Sapient
Designation - Associate Developer 2
Work Experience includes working for US clients and contributions towards internal projects acknowledged for being cutting-edge
Looking to pivot into a Tech PM role or alternatively fintech firms

Graduation- B.Tech from Delhi Technological University (DTU) with an overall Gpa of 8.1/10
12th - 95%
10th - 94%

Gmat Score - 700

Will ISB consider profiles like mine considering background is a General Engineering Male with tech experience?
Or would be better suited to apply abroad for masters

Hi skarmanya,

Based on your profile, it's important to note that your engineering background and tech experience should not be an issue for admissions. While having only 2 years of work experience might be on the lower side for ISB, it shouldn't be the sole reason for rejection. Admissions decisions will depend on a holistic evaluation of various factors, including essays, interviews, and your overall profile.

Your education from a reputed institution with a good academic track record is a positive aspect of your profile. If possible, aiming to improve your GMAT score by 20 or 30 points could strengthen your application.

Both an MBA and a master's degree abroad can be valuable options, but the choice depends on your specific goals and career aspirations. Here are some points to consider:

MBA:

An MBA will provide a broad business education with a focus on leadership and management skills
It can help you transition into roles like Tech PM
An MBA can also provide a strong network and access to recruitment opportunities with top companies

Masters Abroad:

A master's degree abroad will provide you with specialized technical knowledge and skills.
This option may be more suitable if you want to deepen your expertise in a specific area of technology or fintech.
It can open doors to job prospects in international markets.
You may need to build your business and management skills separately since a master's degree is usually more focused on technical aspects.

Consider factors such as the specific skills and knowledge you want to acquire, the type of roles and industries you're targeting and your willingness to study abroad to make this decision.

If you decide to apply for an MBA now, it's essential to showcase impactful contributions at work and highlight significant growth or prospects for growth. Emphasize your achievements, leadership potential and ability to drive results in your essays and interviews. Your interviews will focus on understanding why you would want to do an MBA at this stage in your career mainly to understand whether you are serious about the MBA and genuinely driven to reach your goals.

You may also consider the option of applying to both ISB and business schools abroad, if feasible for you. We at Admit Expert have helped candidates with just 2 years of work experience gain admission to schools like NYU Stern with 100% scholarship. Our team of experts can provide personalized guidance and support to help you highlighting your strengths, achievements and potential for growth in your application to maximize your chances of success.

Hi Sancharey,

You have a strong academic foundation with consistently good scores throughout your education. Your work experience in digital marketing, strategy writing and news writing is very diverse and could set you apart. You need to create a compelling narrative to link your current skills and work experience to your future goals and aspirations and how an MBA fits into the overall picture.

Your extracurricular involvement as a founding member of the creative writing society adds depth to your profile and could be used to highlight your leadership potential.

To strengthen your profile, take the GMAT and aim for a competitive score of 720+

Overall, with a well-rounded profile and diverse work experience, you have a good chance of securing admissions to ISB, SPJIMR and the IIMs, provided you score well on the GMAT and submit compelling written materials.

For a more detailed 1-1 strategy session, please write to [email protected] or fill the form at http://www.admitexpert.com

Hi Sancharey hope this finds you well

Your profile is intriguing, but it seems there is more to be explored. One crucial aspect you left out is your goals, which hold significant weight in the evaluation process of Business schools. The B schools are keen to understand why you aspire to pursue an MBA/PGP and what motivates you to invest substantial time and financial resources. What specific achievements or objectives are you aiming to attain through this educational journey (aspirational or inspirational)? Without that, it's extremely challenging to understand what a content specialist might want to do with ISB or a Top IIM.

It's important to be pragmatic, clear, and authentic about your expectations from an MBA/PGP. Admissions committees have a long memory of applicants with vague/generic goals. To stand out, take time to reflect on your professional background and where you see yourself in 5-10 years, identify areas of growth, and research the necessary skills for any post MBA transitions (if needed).

You can read more about this here -
Fail-proof strategy for acing that ISB Interview

What ISB looks for really? A fresh perspective

Avoid these pitfalls in goals essays

Other aspects these schools will evaluate you on-

1. Growth Progression in your career - Make sure you demonstrate how you attained incremental responsibilities and leadership opportunities with every growth step in your career. Unpack your experiences and construct your stories in a way that shows that working on your projects has given you much more hands-on experience, more experiential maturity, and more capability to contextualize business problems (specific to your area of work, maybe in content strategy or content marketing). Nothing works better than a strong industry focus.

2. A well rounded personality- You mentioned only one current Extra professional activity. For your ECs, I suggest that you think deeper and analyze whether you have missed considering any mundane/ unobvious/ subtle initiatives you may have taken through the years ( travel, learning a new language, certain diversity initiatives at work, for example, raising voice against gender discrimination, voicing strong opinions for diversity in the workforce, providing financial or moral support to someone in need, teaching the underprivileged kids, organizing diversity talks or off-site activities for better collaboration among teams, and so on). In my experience, I have seen that applicants struggle to recall in the early stages of application how they contributed toward the betterment of their community. It could take a little introspection to unravel it all.

3. Needless to say, aim for a solid GMAT

Feel free to reach out should you need candid advice

Hi Sancharey,

Please see below our feedback from ISB PoV:

Pros:
1. Your diverse work experience not just across sectors but across functions along with quantifiable impact
2. Acads: good %s with unique educational specialization (journalism)

Areas to focus/ introspect:
1. GMAT: Given your unique profile, we believe it would still be fine if you end up scoring slightly lower than average GMAT score of ISB's class of 2023 (720). Therefore, you should target a score of at least 700
2. Post MBA goals introspection: These should be aligned with your past experience and through this, you might also want to think about how you would leverage ISB to achieve those aspirations
3. Career Trajectory projection: Given you have 5yr+ of work experience, it is important to show your career progression. These need not be only through promotions, it can be through other achievements like consistent upskilling of certain skill sets across 3 different roles
4. Contribution to ISB: Putting together your enriching experience that you have gained so far, it is important to clearly communicate your value add to the ISB cohort

All the best for your GMAT!

Hope this was helpful! We are a bunch of ISB alums who help potential ISB candidates with profile positioning, essay reviews and interview mocks. Feel free to book a 15 min free session for more discussion- https://calendly.com/reachusfly/15min

Hey Manan, hope all is well. Academics (X,XII,College) look fine, no red flags. Fractal is a recognised brand and the work-experience as you have described it looks impactful. You should try to bring in your team-leading experience as well in the essays from the most recent work-ex. That being said, target a 720+ on the GMAT to make it competitive in terms of candidature. Extracurriculars don't have a lot of meat, so you will need to bring in as much impact as you can from your two work stints. Try to mention any work-awards as well that you have won till date in Zycus/Fractal, in the essays. All the best!

Hi MananShah070296!

It's always exciting to see a data science professional seeking to diversify their skills through an MBA. Your blend of analytics and leadership experience will certainly add richness to your application. Here is our assessment of your profile:

- Your academic profile stands strong with commendable percentages in your 10th and 12th. Your B.E CGPA is also robust and your series of certifications in data analytics only solidify your acumen in the field. On the GMAT front, your current score of 640 is a bit on the lower side for the schools you're targeting. We'd recommend aiming for a score of 680+ to strengthen your chances, especially at ISB.

- As a data science consultant, your professional background will be attractive to schools. Your experience in developing pricing models, deciphering search algorithms, and performing spend analysis are noteworthy achievements. However, it would be beneficial to clearly articulate your post-MBA goals. Are you seeking to advance within data science, shift into another field, or possibly launch a startup? The more clarity you provide on your aspirations, the better your chances of convincing the admissions committee of your motivation.

- Your work experience, both in terms of quantity and quality, seems substantial. Your roles and responsibilities at Fractal Analytics and Zycus Infotech speak volumes about your technical prowess and your potential for leadership. One challenge for data science professionals is translating technical achievements into business impact. Ensure to convey how your work has affected business outcomes in tangible ways.

- In terms of next steps, focus on amplifying your GMAT score and fine-tuning your essays. A compelling narrative that stitches together your past experiences, your rationale for an MBA at this stage in your career, and your future aspirations will be instrumental. Be sure to highlight how your unique skill set could contribute to the programs you're interested in, as schools like ISB and IIMs value the diversity and unique perspectives each student brings to the class.

- You have not raised any specific questions, but if there are areas you want us to elaborate on, please let us know.

We hope this analysis is valuable to you and provides some direction as you navigate your MBA applications. If you have further queries or would like more personalized guidance, don't hesitate to reach out. Good luck with your MBA journey!

Hi Sancharey,

I loved reading about your work, especially the work you have done for the Election Commission. Thats at the state level- and Indian demographics are complex as hell- so I would assume you got to work on some complex stuff here. I would also assume you handled a fair bit of quantitative analysis. If yes, you should highlight it in your applications- through the resume and essays. Your education hasn't included quantitative rigour, so you should use every opportunity to convey to the adcom that you can indeed handle the quant aspect of your MBA courses. This is where the GMAT score would also play a significant role. Aim to score high on the quant sections for the same reason mentioned earlier.

Now, one big piece missing for me, which other consultants have also highlighted above, is your reason for doing an MBA? Why is it essential for your future career? what kind of roles are you after, post-MBA (as in, what are your career goals)? Do they mandate an MBA education? Basically, you will have to make a very convincing case with regards to the goals and the need for an MBA.

Other than this, you are a strong candidate.

Hi,
A GMAT retake is definitely important here. You could check if you want to add anything in terms of extracurricular interests. Although helping juniors to succeed is an important value addition in itself. Rest focus on introspecting your stories well for a strong application. Research your goals post MBA so that you can build a strong connect.

All the best!

Hi MananShah070296,

Your profile has several strengths, including strong academic performance, good work experience in data science and decent extracurricular activities. Improving your GMAT score will significantly enhance your chances of admission to top-tier schools like ISB and IIM A/B/C. Aim for a score of 720+

Additionally, ensure that your application materials and LORs effectively showcase your achievements, career progression and goals. You need to show conviction for your goals and clarity in terms of how the MBA fits into the overall plan. It is also important to highlight what you bring to the table and why the school should pick you over other qualified candidates.

Hi MananShah070296,

Please see below our feedback.

Pros:
1. Work experience: Seems strong (both nature of the work and company that you are working for) but sounds technical. You might want to tone it down when putting it on applications/ leveraging for essays. Quantification of achievements always helps.
2. Acads: Scores seem good. While the engineering college name is not mentioned, please note that graduating from a tier 1 college improves credibility of the candidate and also increases the GMAT score expectations.
3. Extra-curriculars: Your achievements in Maths Olympiad demonstrates analytical capabilities + your mentoring activity coupled with leading a team at Fractal demonstrates leadership capabilties. Both these capabilities can accordingly be weaved into your essays depending on the story line.

Immediate Focus:
GMAT: Basis your strong profile, we recommend you target a score of at least 710 (average GMAT score for ISB is 720).

Introspection required:
1. Your post MBA goals and why you need ISB to achieve the same (along with why MBA now?)
2. Who should provide your recommendation? You have 2 options- Your manager(s) or client(s) (your decision would depend on your rapport with these stakeholders and who you think would provide a relevant reco- aligned with your story)

Net-net, if you are able to secure a competitive GMAT score, your would be a strong candidate for ISB (assuming effective use of your different elements of your profile to generate good essays/ recommendations).

All the best for your GMAT!

Hope this was helpful! We are a bunch of ISB alums who help potential ISB candidates with profile positioning, essay reviews and interview mocks. Feel free to book a 15 min free session for more discussion- https://calendly.com/reachusfly/15min

Hello GauthamManoj

Work ex along with achievements shows good potential for story telling.
Extracurricular look outdated and may not add much value unless you can show them to be relevant even today via good story that connects the dots well.
While past academic record is good, the GMAT does not inspire a lot of confidence considering the engineering background and the over sought role.
Career goals need to be discussed as to how are you planning to transition into product management which is a largely tech background role and your current experience may be in a different kind of product development (but as you said this needs to be understood further).
Are you planning to retake the GMAT?

To add to the evaluation on the IIM forum, you should be a competitive candidate for ISB. Make sure that there is clarity along your goal in product management, and how your prior background and an MBA fits into this. That is critical to building a successful application.

Hey GauthamManoj,

You have solid academics along with a masters degree which will be a big positive, however your test score will be below the class median. Will suggest that you plan to retake the GMAT if there is scope for improvement or take up the GRE in case your score has plateaued after multiple attempts.
In terms of your work experience, given your strong background in manufacturing as an R&D engineer, transitioning to a pure PM role maybe a bit of stretch since you will be competing with other who will have more relevant work ex for a limited set of PM roles, thus would suggest you revisit your career aspirations and maybe think about some good leadership opportunities that will help you transition into a leadership role within allied industries. Sector / function pivot in a 1 year program will become challenging and hence its best you think deeply about your past experience and try to make a connection with your future plans. ISB has some decent leadership development opportunities coming on campus where you may have an edge over others.

Hope that helps? All the best for your upcoming application.

Thank you,

RE APPLICANT

Hello Everyone,

I request a profile review for ISB, I am planning to apply in R1 for ISB

GMAT: 700 ( V35, Q50, AWA 5.5, IR 8 ): Should I re-attempt GMAT? I had a very bad test day. My current plan is to write GMAT in the next few weeks and aim for a better V score.

Current Profile-

Acads:
B.E. EEE, BITS Pilani : 7.77
XII: 92% (CBSE)
X: 10 cgpa (CBSE)

Work Ex:
6 months as a software development intern at a leading MNC
3+ years as Energy Market Analyst at Energy Exemplar ( 1 promotion )

Full-time work ex is in technical customer success role. Worked with clients from different regions across EMEA. Provided customized on-site and off-site training and workshops to them

Ex-Curricular:
Completed 6-month leadership workshop organized by the company
Won company-wide Hackathon in 2021.
Won an ideation event "Futurethon" where we had to suggest another product that the company can add to its portfolio in the next 5 years
Won "Share the future" award - Quarterly CEO award for excellent client engagement
An active member of the Nirmaan organization

Interests:
Reading books, Painting, took up new activities like swimming and surfing

Long-term and short-term goals-
Short term goal is to get into a strategy consulting role, Long term goal is to build something of my own preferably in ed tech or work in a high level corporate strategy role

My questions-
1. I was rejected last year in R2 ( not even waitlisted ), with the same profile. If anyone can provide me feedback as to what may have been wrong, I can work on that ( OFC, apart from my below par GMAT )
2. I am planning to re-take GMAT. What other aspects should I work on?
3. I feel my ex curricular are lacking, any suggestions on how can I improve it over next few months? Or how can I present it better?
4. I got the LOR from my direct manager in India team, should I get an LOR from someone in Europe? ( I work closely with EMEA team and have a manager there as well)
5. I can share my essays in case anyone will be kind enough to review them, as they would have also contributed to the reject.
