Hi I have got 590 in gmat. I am a mother of two year old and is currently working in public sector undertaking ( Government bank) in India for 12 years as special assistant . I have completed my graduation with Bsc Mathematics Honours (51 %). Is there any chance of me getting into HEC for 2025 intake?

sarkarparama87 - The work-ex bracket of the HEC MBA cohort is usually 2-10 years, although there are exceptions with 12-13 years experience who do make it. Your GMAT is on the lower side, I would suggest a retake (or switching to GRE) if possible to strengthen your chances, given that the undergrad score is also low.

What are your goals post MBA i.e. what sector/ function are you looking to transition to? It'd also be important to have a strong narrative linking your career arc to your goals, and how an MBA/ HEC would help you achieve them.

KynnN - HEC MBA alum here. I was part of the Jan intake (J’18) and transitioned to management consulting in the Middle East post-MBA, also did a strategy internship at a German firm from Mar-Jun ’19 i.e. pre-graduation. Both intakes offer opportunities to intern, here’s some differences: For the September intake, there are 2 windows when you can intern: Summer and Winter. For example, if you join the September 2024 intake, you can potentially intern during May-August 2025 or January-June 2026. This can particularly help if you want to explore multiple industries or sectors through internships. It is worth noting here that the September intake participants are required to come back to class for their Specialization (i.e. Second/ Customized Phase) after completion of internship (May-August). In this context, the advantage that the January intake offers is the opportunity to do a long internship (upto 6 months) after completing your MBA course-work in 12-13 months. For example, if you join the January 2025 intake, you have the option to complete the MBA course-work by December 2025 and intern from January-June 2026, with the possibility of joining the same company full-time post graduation (i.e. July 2026). This can particularly benefit candidates who are keen to explore a certain sector/function. By leveraging your MBA learnings, you can do a 6-month internship in that domain and eventually join the same (or similar) company/ role post graduation. Regarding timing, HEC officially maintains that all rounds have equal chances. To be on the safer side, I would suggest applying in the earlier rounds if you can as the scholarship pool/ funds are higher. Broadly given your profile and context though, you could try applying in the Feb round for the Sep intake i.e. it’s not extremely late. Thank you so much! It was really insightful to know.

MBAGuide
KynnN If I may add, I feel it’s the late rounds for the Sept 24 intake, so it may be really difficult to secure a good amount of scholarship. But you could still try and see. If you go with the Jan 25 Intake, you may get better sponsorship, and given you will save some costs, you may even be able to do an exchange in the US (Yale/Stern) if you are interested and explore opportunities there. Also, just keep in perspective that consulting recruitments have been low this year, and I hear from a current student the scene wasn’t great with consulting at HEC, although there were decent opportunities in other areas. So, if you are a non-native/non EU, it’s best to research your fallback options and not just count on consulting. Thank you so much!! Given your advice, I think maybe the Jan’25 is not so bad. Maybe the economy will be better by that time and there will be more consulting opportunities

690 Is the avg of the program, where are you from?
I am from India. I also thought 690 was the average. I am not sure if I should take the test again.

Aiming for 10-20 points above the average score would be ideal for an Indian applicant, given the competitive pool. If you feel you can improve the score, a retake is worth it, especially as the AdCom has indicated you to consider it. A good score would also increase scholarship chances.

Thanks Arvind. I plan to do that and I have sent an email to them saying the same.

My main query is that in case I am not able to improve the score (as this was already my 3rd attempt), does it essentially, indirectly mean a straight no?

yogesh203 - not necessarily. Best case scenario: the score improves. Worst case: you atleast followed their suggestion and gave it another shot. If you have time, try taking the Focus Edition (which has some updates vs the Classic) or switching to GRE. Taking a mock of each can help assess which you find more comfortable.

yogesh203 for your demographic (Indian male) its average at best, maybe even low. Analyze your current split of 690 to see if there is a particular area, quant or verbal, that needs more attention and then focus on that in the retake. Demonstrating steady improvement in the area of concern can help make a good impression on the admissions committee. This is a tried and tested strategy. You can also talk about this improvement in the optional essay to provide context and emphasize your commitment. Proactively show how you are making extra efforts. You may also share about any other relevant courses you are taking depending on what's pulling your GMAT score down.

Best wishes

Vsing - the profile looks good.

Aim to have a strong narrative covering your professional arc (key projects, skillsets gained, promotions?), post-MBA goals (being more specific here can help) and how MBA/ HEC fits in. ECs and personality would also be important to highlight, as HEC has a bunch of essays that aim to extract these.

Feel free to reach out if you need help.

Siak0730 - quite an interesting profile. A few thoughts/ clarifications:

1. Could you clarify if your role(s) were both in the Indian Navy and SG-based shipping company? If so, what was the split/ duration? This par't isn't clear from the description.

2. Your total work-ex/ age is a bit on the higher side (HEC MBA's class has typically 2-10 years work-ex), although there are strong profiles that do make it with 12-13 years work-ex (some even higher). Did you connect with AdCom? It would be important, as an experienced candidate, to discuss your profile and motivations with them and seek their feedback. The "Connect With Us" form on the website would enable you to do this.

3. Are there any particular geographies you're looking to transition to post MBA?

What are my chances for HEC Paris??

Hi Siak0730 all in all, quite an impressive profile. However, your experience is on the higher end, so your GMAT will definitely be an important factor in the adcom's decision. Schools will take in a few folks from the above average experience group in operations, so you will need to show a very thorough approach and adaptability/learning agility, the critical evaluation factors for older applicants. I have 10 years of experience in operations and supply chain and have worked with many applicants in this field. The biggest drawback I have seen with many is the inability to see the big picture in business and things beyond the day-to-day operational tasks they are engaged in. An MBA application is often the first time they are trying to understand the rational or big story behind their actions or decisions. If you want to stand out, you need to show that you have a natural curiosity and an evolved business acumen. Supply chain consulting or design is a very analytical domain, contrary to what most folks with operations experience believe, and having your aptitude at the right level is important if you are pitching SC consulting as your goal. If you feel you dont have time to improve your score, incorporate your research into your goals and the wider understanding of your target domain smartly into your resume, essays and interviews.

Confused what might be the best strategy for your business school applications? Reach out.
Best wishes
