"Navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain, in 1911 Roald Amundsen and his four-man crew began their groundbreaking expedition to the South Pole, and they were equipped only with four sleds and basic provisions."

Issues in the original sentence:

The introductory phrase "Navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain" is awkwardly placed at the beginning of the sentence.
Now, let's analyze option (B):

(B) "In 1911, Roald Amundsen and his four-man crew began their groundbreaking expedition to the South Pole, navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain equipped only"

Reasons for choosing (B):

The sentence begins with a clear introductory phrase "In 1911," providing a chronological context to the events.

The main action is placed immediately after the introductory phrase, making the sentence more straightforward and easier to understand.

The phrase "navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain" is well-placed to describe the action of the expedition.

The phrase "equipped only" appropriately modifies the expedition, specifying the limited provisions.

Overall, option (B) offers a more concise and grammatically correct structure, addressing the issues present in the original sentence.

Option (C) is the best because it starts with "In 1911," which gives a clear timeline. The phrase "navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain" fits well to describe what Roald Amundsen and his crew were doing. The sentence flows smoothly, and the part "and they were only equipped" finishes it off neatly. The other options either have awkward structures or don't flow as well.

A is gone due to misplaced mod.
B's equipped modifying wrong entity.
D & E are also wrong for their modifier positioning.

Answer is C

Option (A): The phrase "navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain" should be placed closer to the subject "Roald Amundsen and his four-man crew" for clarity. The phrase "they were equipped only" is awkwardly placed at the end of the sentence.

Option (C): The phrase "navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain" is placed in a way that suggests the crew was only equipped with the terrain itself, which is not the intended meaning. The phrase "they were only equipped" is also awkwardly placed at the end of the sentence.

Option (D): The phrase "Having navigated the unforgiving Antarctic terrain" suggests that the crew had already completed the expedition at the time mentioned in 1911, which is not accurate. The phrase "they were only equipped" is also awkwardly placed at the end of the sentence.

Option (E): The phrase "Roald Amundsen and his four-man crew, in 1911began their groundbreaking expedition to the South Pole" lacks proper punctuation and is not grammatically correct. The phrase "navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain" is placed after the mention of the crew, disrupting the flow of the sentence. The phrase "equipping themselves only" is not the most accurate phrasing, as it implies they were responsible for their own equipment, which may not be the intended meaning.

In summary, option (B) provides the most appropriate structure and phrasing for the given sentence.

Navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain should come after began their groundbreaking expedition to the South Pole, otherwise it changes the meaning of the sentence. Only B & E does that.

B has incorrect usage of equipped with which modifies Antarctic.
Hence E

(A) Navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain, in 1911 Roald Amundsen and his four-man crew began their groundbreaking expedition to the South Pole, and they were equipped only (Modifier misplacement. (B) In 1911, Roald Amundsen and his four-man crew began their groundbreaking expedition to the South Pole, navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain equipped only ( navigating the unforgiving Antarctic terrain equipped only should modify the Roald Amundsen and his four-man crew)

A) Present participial phrase is illogical. They cannot begin their journey while navigating the terrain at the same time.
B) This seems to convey a clear idea.
C) Same as A.
D) If they have already navigated the terrain then how can they begin the expedition after? Logical flaw.
E) Are they navigating and equipping at the same time? Why are they two actions separated as if they are unrelated? Subtle, but logical problems are there.

meaning wise Navigating the unforgiving antart.... should modify the expedition

A. How can they be navigating when they start the expidtion ?? meaning is off
B. makes most sense modifer place ment and meaning wise
C. Sentence says The team was navigating terrains when begining the expedition, so this is awkward in meaning
D. Having navigated... can not be done when the expedition is beginning.
E. placement of the navigating modifier is correct, but equipping and navigating both are treated on the same levels, but meaning wise it makes sense to say that they were equipped while navigating..

B is the best choice

This one is another where I used the end of the stem to guide me, but will give other reasons why I think it is B as well

A - 'and they were only equipped' is awkward and 'navigating the unforgiving arctic terrain' does not make sense as an intro for the sentence since it does not set the stage or bring up the most important point

B - 'navigating the unforgiving... equipped only with' definitely flows the best into the end of the sentence and dramatizes that they navigated the terrain with few resources. The start of the sentence stem also flows alright with no extra words

C - again, weird placement of 'navigating the unforgiving arctic terrain' and the 'and they were equipped only with' is wordy and repetitive

D - the semi colon/breakup of the two clauses is not necessary and makes things clunky

E - 'roald amundsen and his 4 man crew, in 1911 began...' introduces the time awkwardly and creates a run-on sentence with little connection between subjects and objects. bleh
