Hi I posted an answer for this .But I am not sure about the reason I chose for cancelling option D i.e unlike shouldn't be followed by a phrase .
Can someone see if my explanation is correct.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

Could anyone please elaborate further on why E is right and why all the other options are wrong? Honestly I don't even know where to start with this one.

HI

the parallelism in C seems to be the correct one. Also it is C in many forums as well.

Kindly recheck.

Thanks

Unlike most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinder are very difficult to tell apart.

A. Unlike most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinder are very difficult to tell apart.
--Incorrect comparison

B. Unlike most Red Grinder species, the gender of the speckled Red Grinder is very difficult to distinguish.
--Incorrect comparison

C. Unlike those in most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinders are very difficult to distinguish.
--Those refers to "male and female speckled Red Grinders" and NOT TO "male and female". Had the sentence been "Unlike those in ....., the male and female IN ....", the sentence would have been correct.

D. It is very difficult, unlike in most Grinder species, to tell the male and female speckled Red Grinder apart.
--Information present in between the 2 commas becomes non-essential.

E. Speckled Red Grinders are unlike most species of Red Grinder in that it is very difficult to tell the male and female apart.
--Correct. The comparison is correct i.e. between species

Unlike most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinder are very difficult to tell apart.

A. Unlike most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinder are very difficult to tell apart.- Incorrect, species compared with gender of other species
B. Unlike most Red Grinder species, the gender of the speckled Red Grinder is very difficult to distinguish. Incorrect, species compared with gender of other species
C. Unlike those in most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinders are very difficult to distinguish. Incorrect comparison
D. It is very difficult, unlike in most Grinder species, to tell the male and female speckled Red Grinder apart. - Contrast is missing
E. Speckled Red Grinders are unlike most species of Red Grinder in that it is very difficult to tell the male and female apart. - Correct

In comparison questions, most important part is to compare 2 logical entities - Apple to Apple, Species to Species, etc.

In E, the comparison is between 2 species, which is logical and hence is the correct answer.

Kudos if you like my post :)

This question is a rip off from the original question Gmat paper test. The variant is discussed here : https://gmatclub.com/forum/unlike-most- ... 01083.html

Option A incorrectly compares “Red Grinder species” to “the male and female…”. B incorrectly compares “Red Grinder species” to “the gender…”. C has a broken //, it compares ‘those in…” to “the male and female…”. “unlike in” is unidiomatic, so Option D is not correct.

Thus, E is the right answer.

This is how I interpreted the statement - the gender of speckled Red Grinder is difficult to tell apart unlike most red grinder species.

And I thought B perfectly kept the meaning of the statement.

Please help explain what is wrong with B.

A. Unlike most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinder are very difficult to tell apart.
B. Unlike most Red Grinder species, the gender of the speckled Red Grinder is very difficult to distinguish.
C. Unlike those in most Red Grinder species, the male and female speckled Red Grinders are very difficult to distinguish.
D. It is very difficult, unlike in most Grinder species, to tell the male and female speckled Red Grinder apart.
E. Speckled Red Grinders are unlike most species of Red Grinder in that it is very difficult to tell the male and female apart.

Hi,

Lets's start with the meaning of the sentence .
The speckled Red grinder (a particular species of the Red Grinder)is compared with other Red Grinder species.
This particular species is different from the other species because in this species it is hard to distinguish b/w male and female.

A has an comparison error. Species must be compared to species not to male and female of a species.
B again has an comparison error.
C those is plural and seems to refer to male and female .
Unlike male and female in X , the male and female Y are very difficult to distinguish.
In is missing before Y. not parallel.
Also unlike must be followed by noun not a phrase. hence it's wrong----can someone confirm this
D. again unlike in is a phrase.
E. is the correct answer
Comparison between species is correct.

Yes, similar to "like", "unlike" is followed by a noun, pronoun or noun phrase only. The ones in option C and D are prepositional phrases.
