Gave an official GMAT test today. Verbal: 13/36 incorrect and a score of 31 Quant : 8/31 incorrect and a score of 49
does verbal penalize more for incorrect answers? I expect to get atleast 35 with 13 incorrect. Incorrect questions were 1,12,13,15,18,23,25,26,27,28,31,32,35 Or is it because I got a series of incorrect in the middle that my score got reduced tremendously?
However, yesterday i took Kaplan test to get 15/36 incorrect and a score of 39 Incorrect questions 6,8,11,13,16,17,20,22,23,25,27,30,31,34,35 Please help me understand this. My exam is in 2 days.

It is very hard to tell. It depends on what order and which question that is wrong. The first 10 questions are far more valuable than the last 10, meaning that it is important to get them right. You are also given extra points for scoring several correct in a row I believe. There is also evidence suggesting that SC/RC/CR are not valued equally much.

Yes, I think you have already understood that rather than just looking at the absolute number of inaccurate questions, it is important to look at the level of the difficulty, timing etc before you could infer anything about your verbal score. For e.g. The penalty is very severe on getting a easy question wrong.
I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. To reiterate, your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. Rather than spending time worrying about the GMAC algorithm, you really should focus on the things you can control, and the number one thing you can control is getting better at the GMAT. If you get to a point at which you can dominate the GMAT, the specifics of the scoring algorithm won't matter because you will to have the skills that you need to get an amazing score, right?
With that said, when is your GMAT? What is your GMAT score goal?
