Hi All,

Hope everyone is doing well in their GMAT preparation journey.

I had started my preparation in November last week where I had given my first GMAT mock test with no prep on the official site. After the test, I started practicing quant questions from the OG and referred to various sources such as youtube, books, and online forums for my Verbal Prep (SC Only). Today I gave my second mock test on Veritas Prep. Following are the scores for both tests.

1st Practice Test (Official):580 (Q43, V26, IR2), Did not attempt AWA.
2nd Practice Test (Vertias): 570 (Q46, V22, IR5), I attempted AWA but did not receive any score, the site was mentioning N/A.

Between the tests, I used to study for 1-2 hours (though planned 4hrs for it) not regularly, I could improve my Quant score by 3points while some of the questions got wrong due to some silly mistakes or incorrect interpretation of the question, but I think with a lot more practice I can improve my QUant score by few more points.

My main concern now is verbal, it is becoming a nightmare for me, moreover, the 2nd exams score V22 was by luck (or by fluke) as I was not confident on the options when I was marking them. For the last few days, I have viewed Wizako's SC course available on youtube but I was able to understand all of it. After that, I started using Manhattan SC Book 6th Edition which is quite good but I am still finding some of the topics hard to understand such as how to identify present continuous/present participle. My problem with verbal is that I am unable to comprehend most of the sentences/passage as the topics are not much familiar to me, the topics which are familiar to me I do understand the text but still struggle with some of the questions. I know topic familiarity is not needed in GMAT but reading familiar topics are a little easier than unfamiliar ones. I am planning to enroll in a verbal course but I am not confident whether it will help me or not as my fear of verbal is increasing day by day. Additionally in SC, I am having a hard time identifying the subject and the verb as most of the sentences have multiple nouns and verbs.

I am planning to give my main GMAT in April 2021 and I am targetting 710+ (ISB-India), till the time I have I will not be able to study for 2-3 weeks in Jan as I am relocating to a different city. Also, I am planning to give 1 mock test every week.

I request all GMAT Experts, can you please :please: :please: :please: :please: :please: help me with few tips on how to handle my Darth Vader Verbal Section

Hi muggergammy,

I see that you are not doing your prep in the right way. GMAT is a test of application of concepts. So, your preparation has to mostly focus around the methodologies and the strategies. Mainly, verbal questions can be very tricky as test makers tend to use similar words and make close answer choices. If you are not conceptually clear and if you do not use the right methodology to solve questions, you will very likely end up getting stuck between two answer choices.

Rely on one good standard resource:

You must have heard the saying "Too many chefs spoil the dish". The same goes with GMAT resources as well. It's always better to rely on one good standard resource which can help you with
  • Concepts
  • Methodologies
  • Practice quizzes
  • Detailed solutions
  • A proper study plan

If you follow too many resources, you will eventually get confused with the methods to use. So, I suggest you to stick to one resource and do your preparation in a structured way. You have to be clear of what to study on any given day. Studying from random resources will only result in wastage of precious time and effort.

The path ahead:

As you have the deadline coming, I suggest you follow a strict study plan which can help you with weekly tasks. This will make you GMAT preparation more structured. You can check out the free trial of GMATWhiz and get your personalized study plan. This will help you get an idea of the structure of the course and the right way to prepare for GMAT. Here are a few success stories of students who improved their score significantly by focusing on the right methodologies.

If you wish to know more about the study strategy, I suggest you to get in touch with me over a call so that we can have a detailed discussion over the same.
