Last year the range of the annual salaries of the 100 employees at Company X was $30,000. If the annual salary of each of the 100 employees this year is 10 percent greater than it was last year, what is the range of the annual salaries of the 100 employees this year?

(A) $27,000
(B) $30,000
(C) $33,000
(D) $36,000
(E) $63,000

let the lowest salary be x.

Therefore, highest salary is x +30000.

Now salary of each employee is increased by 10%.

Therefore the salaries will remain arranged in the same order as before.

or Lowest salary = 1.1x and Highest = 1.1 * (x+30000)

or Range = highest - lowest = 1.1 * (x+30000) - 1.1x

= 33000, Hence, C

The range of their earlier salaries was 30,000 and now each of their salaries have increased by a constant 10%, so the range will also increase by a constant 10%. Am i going right?

Last year, annual salaries of 100 employees=$30,000
This year, 10% increase than it was last year=10/100*$30000=$3000
so, this year annual salaries of 100 employees=30000+3000=$33000

We can let the lowest salary from last year = 10,000 and the highest = 40,000.

Thus, the new low is 1.1 x 10,000 = 11,000 and the new high is 40,000 x 1.1 = 44,000.

So the new range is 44,000 - 11,000 = 33,000.

Range is the difference between the maximum and the minimum value = Maximum and the minimum.

If each of the maximum and the minimum are increased by the same %, then the difference will also increase by the same percentage.

Therefore if the increase for each employee is 10%, then the difference 30,000 also will increase by 10%

The range is = \(30000 * \frac{110}{100} = 33000\)

Note: Please do not get confused between % and amount. If each of the maximum and minimum are increased by the same amount, then the range will remain the same.

Option C

last year
range= 30000
sya x= highest
y= lowest
x-y = 30000

this year 10% increment for each
so highest would be 1.1x
lowest would be 1.1y
range = 1.1x- 1.1y= 1.1(x-y)= 1.1(30000) = 33000
