I found this easiest to calculate by writing x|y and v|w on my notepad, then adding a tally mark to the appropriate bucket as I encountered each letter.

Can one of you please tell us why "or" here means sum? Why did the question not use "and"? "x or y" versus "x and y"
I know in statistics, "or" is combination and "and" is multiplication.

There are no boxes marked 'x and y'. Either a box is marked x or it is marked y. We need to consider both.

When I say, either A OR B will come with me, how many options do I have to take someone with me? I have 2 options. 
When we say we need number of boxes marked x OR y, we have 5 + 4 = 9 options.
