I had enrolled myself into Wizako Training. At this time i was in chennai. I must say, the quant classes helped me a lot. As someone from an engineering background, quant was my strength. The classes at Wizako levelled it up to the next level. Verbal was my weakness( as it is for the majority of Indians). After 2 months of preparation at Wizako, I took my first GMAT exam on 28 March 2022 and scored a 520 (Q50,V12). I was devastated. Not the score I wanted to see after 2 months of preparation.
At this point, I realised that the batch class will not help me as I needed a lot of help in verbal (V12 speaks for itself). I started looking into various test preps for 1-2-1 training. Top one percent GMAT training,
target test prep, etc. However i was still not convinced with the program as majority of them were not catering to my needs. Around this time, I saw an ad on Youtube on ScoreLeap. I had never heard of this company before. Was way too sceptical. But after having a conversation with their counsellors, I decided to go forward with them. Somehow, they sounded promising.
I was transferred to Bangalore from my office, this was a bonus to me as ScoreLeap has its office in Bangalore. We kick started our classes and I must say, the very first day of the training , I knew I had made the right decision by joining them. Kalyan sir (My verbal trainer), is not a teacher. He is my mentor. I have never seen anyone focusing on every detail of the student’s preparation. He made sure all my basics are strong. We started off with SC. The rules taught here are very convenient. It focuses more on the elimination process. (I thought I followed the elimination process too, until Kalyan sir showed me how exactly the elimination process works). My basics was very weak but kalyan sir gave me what i needed. He was super supportive not just in terms of academics but also mentally. In the midway of my preparation, I had a medical emergency. He was supportive even then. He gave me a plan which we would execute once I felt better. These tiny gestures gave a lot of confidence and always pushed me to do more.
He gives a lot of homeworks and be ready to get imposition if you don't complete it. HE WOULD FOLLOW UP ON THE HOMEWORKS and make sure I complete it on time and come back to class with lots of doubts. The way ScoreLeap deals with RC is definitely not the conventional way. Focus is more on Key points, keywords and of course the FIRE Strategy is the LIFE SAVIOR. I used to take 15 mins to solve an RC passage. After lots of practice, I could solve it in 5 to 8 mins. Thanks to the FIRE Approach.
I was always good at logical thinking maybe thats why CR was the easiest section in verbal for me. I was always very comfortable with the CR questions. In a weeks time from the last class, i took my first mock test. It was a shocker. I scored a 510 (V20,Q44). Verbal had increased ofcourse, but quant shook me. Kalyan sat down to analyse each question with me. It was majorly the timing issue. He has a template that you need to fill after each mock test. This helps us understand what exactly is going wrong. He advised me to attend the verbal section first and then the quant section. In my second mock , I hit a 670. One thing I observed was, kalyan wouldn't be happy even if you get the majority of the questions correct. He would want to see how we solved it , if there was an easier and faster way to solve it. From a month’s time from my second mock, we booked the exam date. I was advised to take the mocks at the same time as my actual exam. In all my 6 mocks, I was ranging anywhere between 640 to 700 in the mocks.
I scored a 610(V22,Q50) in my actual exam. I had a severe headache in the middle of the exam due to which I messed up the second half of the exam. Frackly, I had not expected even a V20 on this exam as I was suffering so badly with the stupid headache. Kalyan sat down with me and analysed the ESR. He gave a new plan for the second attempt. The plan was so good, all I had to do was, just follow it 100%.
I took my second and the FINAL attempt after 20 days. Kalyan would constantly follow up with me to see if I am following the plan. I stuck to the process taught in class. I was hitting 700+ on my mocks. Guess what? The exam date was actually my birthday date! I can say, the 730(V39,Q50) that I scored was a gift to myself! I was extremely surprised and happy to see a 730 on the screen. Maybe I was a lot calmer this time as it was also my bday! I realised the key to your dream score is a) Stick to the strategy b) STAY CALM.
You have to hold your nerve and not let any question bother you. As Kalyan would say don’t be greedy. Ditch the questions you dont know before the question ditches you. My advice to all my fellow GMAT test takers is to make sure your basics are strong. Stick to one strategy. Thank you Scoreleap, thank you Kalyan for being the best mentor i needed!
