Hi
I have used private tutor from Manhattan in London. I am quite good in math but did poorly in verbal. After a few unsuccessful attempt I decided to give it a final try. My tutor is Marcus and he is really passionate and helpful. I had 5 hours total with him and we went through all the basic verbal principals. I think most importantly he guided me to develop an efficient game plan and directed me the areas to focus. I think all the drills and practice I did is quite helpful.
I think if you need some help in verbal, the Manhattan strategy book is critical but the private tutor is helpful in helping you identify your weaknesses. In the end I didn't do as well as I prepared, but I am fine with what I got 710 (Q51, V34) and very pleased with MGM's help.
I always thought I was good at English. Verbal in GMAT is also English. Therefore, I thought I was good at GMAT verbal.
Which of the following will most likely weaken the author's conclusion mentioned above:
1. The author was high and blabberred anything.
2. The author is an engineer and generally engineers know nothing about English.
3. Thinking something about oneself does not trully make it a truth.
4. GMAT verbal is also written in English but is not neccesarily in English.
5. The author scored miserably in verbal last time he took his GMAT.
Well, what's the right answer guys? The point is verbal is entirely different from English. And I was shocked to see V28 the last time i gave the GMAT. I knew I had to look at this part of the exam from a different perspective. I started looking at some online courses that taught GMAT verbal in a way that is easier to comprehend and apply. That is how I bumped into e-GMAT verbal online course.
RC - No quick shortcuts from e-GMAT here. They want us to read properly and break down the passage into sentences. I learned that if I could focus on the subject and verb of each sentence, I undertood the passage more clearly. Yes, their approach takes time to absorb, but once you are comfortable with it, it becomes second nature. Before you realize it, you will be comprehending passages better and faster. Try it.
CR - I wish i could use this part of their course more aggressively. I did learn their prephrasing technique though. They ask us to think about the argument in our native language.
SC - This product is just amazing. I have been consistently scoring above 85% in SC. The SC part starts with the components of a basic sentence structure. I realized that once I had gone through their course, I could find more pearls from the Manhattan SC guide as well. I had read the Manhattan SC guide earlier, but could not grasp the advanced concepts. e-GMAT presented those concepts in a very easy way. That, I guess, is their motive too - to present SC concepts to non natives in a way the would understand well. Again, I recommend this product, even if one doesnt want to try RC and CR.
Hope my review helps others too. All the best for your GMAT.
I highly recommend the full set of Manhattan GMAT self-study materials, as well as MGMAT tutors. In particular, MGMAT helped me raise my quant score significantly thanks to its difficult Quant sections on its online CAT exams.
After several months of intense self-study using prep materials from other providers, I first took the GMAT in March 2013 and scored a 700. I debated sticking with the score, my quant/verbal split was very skewed (63rd percentile quant/93rd percentile verbal), and I felt that with more effort/dedication through a structured prep program I could bring up my quant score.
Initially I enrolled in a full 9 week MGMAT course, however when I took a diagnostic test and discussed the results with my instructor, he recommended I consider tutoring instead and focus on quant alone (since my verbal score was already high). MGMAT allowed me to transfer my course credit with relatively little hassle, and I met for ~5 hours of tutoring spread over 2 months.
My tutor did a great job working through difficult problems with me, helping me develop strategic approaches to test-taking, and analyzing the results of my practice tests to give me personalized feedback and problem sets based on my weaknesses. In particular, my tutor helped me understand the importance of time management on the Quant section, and gave me several useful strategies to improve in this respect.
I retook the GMAT in Aug. 2013 and scored a 760, with an 81st percentile quant/99th percentile verbal split. I think my improvement from a good to great score is a result that speaks for itself in terms of the quality of MGMAT materials and instruction. Thanks Manhattan GMAT!
If you are looking to get above a 700 on the GMAT, Manhattan GMAT is definitely the company to choose. It is not the cheapest on the market, but certainly the best - and you receive a TON of resources. I have always had difficulty with standardized tests, and after using MGMAT Prep, I scored in the 98th percentile!
Very methodical organized instruction. Included with their live online classes and tutors are practice tests, practice problems, tips, application suggestions, etc. The company gives a real holistic overview of not just the GMAT, but the entire MBA application process.
Their customer assistance is fantastic, and it is so easy to tailor the tutoring sessions or self-studying schedule to your specific needs. Dmitry Farber is a fantastic tutor -- patient, personable, and very encouraging.
High high high recommendation!
I have been preparing for GMAT for a couple of months already now. I started my preparation with MGMAT strategy guides.
However there was something missing and I signed up for Magoosh. So far it has been an amazing refresher. The videos are amazing and the UI is neat.
The practice questions are top notch. I would recommend everyone try Magoosh and then decide whether it is fit for them.
My only advice for Magoosh is to include more practice questions and explanations. There are ton of nice questions in GMAT Club, which must be discussed by Magoosh.
Being a person who has studied with an English native speaker teacher and has done a self-studying course, I find the e-GMAT verbal online course a great source of studying, especially for non-native speakers like me.
I think you can consider the e-GMAT verbal course as a complement, since every concept is explained in full detail and you are given quizzes at the beginning and the end of every 'chapter', that help you identify your weaknesses and strengths.
I said as a complement, since I think it is important to have an instructor and do a lot of extra practicing to aim for a high verbal score. I am pretty sure you can also have an instructor in e-GMAT, I just haven't tried any live sessions, but I bet they work.
As someone told me, to reach a good score on the verbal section you must practice, practice and practice.
Just started studying, but it has everything I need in one convenient place. They give you hundreds of sample problems and video explanations of how to solve each one. They are very thorough explanations and if you need further review they have related lessons attached so you can quickly review the concepts that you may have forgotten or not know.
I travel a lot for work so this is great for me because I don't need to carry around a review book and can log in and do a few problems whenever I have some downtime in my hotel room.
Before e-GMAT, I performed horribly low on the verbal and really bad on the SC part. I used to get 26-29 in my mocks even after finishing entire OG. I knew there was something wrong.
Finally on a friend's recommendation, I registered for e-GMAT. The best thing about e-GMAT is that they have presentations which you can access anytime. Before and after each section, you have quizzes which tell you if you understood the concept well or if you need to go back.
I finally scored a 40 on the verbal in my actual GMAT exam (730 overall). Thank you e-GMAT!
Magoosh touches all sections neatly with their tailored lessons. Their adaptive practice tests are very useful in building confidence. Their explanation at the end of each question helps determine your weaknesses and strengths.
Magoosh has a tailored 6-week program that helps get to the target. I have yet to take the GMAT test, but my confidence is booming every day with the Magoosh practice tests and lessons.
Magoosh keep your motivation alive with a mixed set of exercises. Apart from Magoosh one needs to follow the OG religiously and GMAT Club questions. With these three I am sure to reach a very good score.
I got to know Magoosh GMAT through my friend who was using the program and improved his GMAT from 590 to 680. During my study time, I realized that my study plans have changed and developed a lot. I no longer have to look for theory from different sources, everything is in Magoosh tutorial videos. With quant or verbal questions, all the explanations are very easy to understand and apply. I also followed the 1 month study plan in Magoosh which helps me not only to manage my schedule, but also to balance my study and my work.
I think I'm much more confident to take the GMAT this time.
