Here’s some of the latest news and reports about business school admissions and the current MBA landscape from media outlets across the country. From a jump in the number of applications of full-time MBA programs to a troubling small decline in the number of female applicants overall, there’s a lot to explore!
Leading off…
GMAC reports overall spike business school applications
- Are happy days here again? According to a report by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), the makers of the GMAT, most MBA programs are reporting significant growth in their full-time business school applications. 61% of global full-time two-year MBA programs that participated in the survey say they have seen application growth, up from 50% in 2013. Another way to look at it: 2014 is the first time in five years when a majority of schools reported a spike in full-time applications. One big surprise that GMAC’s research found: Six out of ten business schools with one-year programs reported a decline in business school applications this past year. GMAC reports slight drop in female business school applications
- While it may be good news that the overall number of full-time business school applications increased this cycle, there’s also a troubling statistic in the findings to report.GMAC also found that the number overall female applicants has declined. The proportion of women in the MBA applicants pool decreased to 37% this year from 39% in 2013.On a positive note, however, GMAC reported that the most recent testing year was the fifth consecutive year that women surpassed the 100,000 mark in the number of GMAT exams taken. Beyonce means business
- Beyonce’s latest album release was the focus for students at Harvard Business School, who did a case study on it. They found some pretty amazing things.Regarding Beyonce’s meeting style, one associate of hers reports: “[Beyonce] doesn’t often sit in her office. She usually walks from one office to the other, speaking with the staff. She’ll come to my office and talk to me, or she will sit in the back and give notes on projects we are working on…. She has got a really good sense of the business side, but she doesn’t like to live there always.” (Billboard)
MIT, Harvard Business School, etc., hit the high seas
- If you enjoy numbers, creativity, strategic planning, luxury … and you also dream of sailing the blue waters of the Mediterranean, then attending a top business school may be just right for you. This past weekend, 400 students from several top-ranked MBA programs traveled to the Italian Riviera to network on some very expensive boats. It was the Rolex MBA Regatta, which took place in the Italian city of Genoa. (Think: Christopher Columbus.)The team from MIT’s Sloan School of Business came out on top, beating other competitors from Harvard Business School, University of Chicago, Booth School of Business, Columbia School of Business, and the host MBA program, the Milan-based SDA Bocconi School of Management. Parents need to butt out of the business school application process
- Do you get the feeling that your parents may be over-involved in your MBA application process? Then it may be time to lovingly but firmly rein them in. Business school admissions officers want students who are able to lead … something hard to demonstrate if your parents are at your side and speaking out at every step. (U.S. News & World Report)
