Decoding the mind of Adcoms during the MBA Admissions process

We would like to understand better how your experiences would help us to shape and grow our diverse community. Please respond in 250 words or less.

This is where most applicants need help deciding whether to write one, as it is an optional essay. But why miss an opportunity when you have an open window to show your skills and talent?

The question seems very straightforward but choosing the right example is a task. To brainstorm a topic for this answer, consider the core elements of your identity and what has already been addressed in your application. Finally, keep the essay's purpose in mind, which is to demonstrate the adcoms your passion and capability to deserve a spot in their school.

You can choose different routes that will guide you in the right direction. In this, you can take help from your close ones to describe you and their feelings about your best qualities and skills. Then, jot down the points and create combinations in which your personality shines.

Approaches

We understand your eagerness and concern in deciding the right topic, as you might have many things to put in this essay. We will share with you some approaches that will guide you in writing NYU supplemental essays.

Community approach

  • Brainstorm a list of communities you belong to, like places, interests, actions, activities, and circumstances.

  • Once you choose a community, use the STAR approach to generate the content for the essay. The flow starts when you talk about the situation you were in and what tasks you had to accomplish. Then you need to describe your actions and results. This format makes your essays concise and develops an interest in your story for the admission committee.

Identity/perspective approach

  • Brainstorm a list of ways to identify the range from ethnicity or nationality to activities (baker, gamer, reader) or interests (poetry, zoology), etc.

  • Describe why these identities reveal different sides of you.

  • Consider addressing an important identity that hasn’t shown up in your application.

Tips to Excel in Essays

  • Stand out with your opening statement.

As you know, the word count is very limited, so make your opening statement attractive with hints for readers about what they can expect from this NYU supplemental essay. For example, you can start by mentioning the most extraordinary contribution you made, like a TED talk, any international competition, work goals, etc., or you can start by telling how you are as a person and what your plans are to add value in school.

  • Imagine you being in school.

This is the part where you tell adcoms why you need to do an MBA and how MBA from NYU will help you grow. Of course, this will need authentic research that you can take from the website, reports, and magazines. Still, our expert suggests you go the extra mile by meeting officials or alums of NYU to show adcoms how passionately you want to be part of their community.

To help you create a strong application, be a part of our coffee chat which we do every alternate week, where you can have a chance to talk to alums of top B-schools and clear all your doubts and know your future classmates!

  • Bring colinearity

Collinearity is connecting the dots between your work experience and short-term and long-term goals throughout your application. This helps business schools understand two important things:

That you have the fundamental skills and expertise to achieve your goals and be successful after MBA

Their MBA program will rightfully bridge the gap between your current knowledge to your short-term and long-term goals.

  • Diversity Experience

The NYU supplemental essay is a great opportunity to show your international experience. Admission officers want to know if you are the right fit for this diverse environment. They want to ensure that you will be a strong addition to the batch and that you can contribute in a diverse setting and not be a passive participant.

If you do not have any past international experience, then chances are high that you will feel alienated. You must demonstrate that you can understand and learn from different perspectives and cultures.

You can give examples of your experience outside the country or how regularly you interact with a multicultural community or team.

NYU Supplemental Essays Example

Identifying the need for change is inexpensive, but bringing the change demands courage. I was the first girl in my town to step out to build a career. I broke gender stereotypes and even fought with my family to do so. However, my journey did not stop at my success, and I strived continually to chart a path for many girls like me, empowering them to drive their change. Propelling a change transformed my life, so the word resonates with me.

Visiting the oilfield for the first time, I discovered that even necessities such as rig-site washrooms were only available for some women. In addition, all Personal-Protective-Equipment coveralls and boots were designed per men's size and specifications and were extremely uncomfortable for women. A significant reason for fewer women in oilfield jobs was that “inequity” became visible to me.

I advocated for change and approached every pertinent stakeholder with ideas to improve this inhabitable ecosystem. Having spent only eight months in my professional life, I got discouraged and jested by many on this “bold” move. However, my firm’s Health-Safety-Environment officer and two remarkable women leaders encouraged me to move forward and extended their support. I organized awareness sessions to introduce reform. Our three-month continuous efforts showed results, and my firm procured customized PPEs and installed rig-site washrooms for women. That year, 22% more women visited well sites, and the duration of their stay at the field was 15% longer.

My passion for the oil&gas industry and my vision to take it to net zero inspired me to change the focus to sustainability and profitability. While leading a team to develop an economic strategy for an oil-field development, to save eight trees, I convinced the management to spend an extra 10k USD and acquire an alternate land location for drilling.

I also made it a contractual obligation to our third-party drillers to treat the drill cuttings before disposal chemically. This first-of-a-kind initiative helped prevent soil contamination which potentially leads to land barrenness.

Propelling stepwise changes can take the industry closer to net zero, one firm and one field at a time.
