Choosing What's Right for You: Insights from INSEAD and IESE MBA Students

Delving into the realm of MBA admissions, our experts who have firsthand experience at INSEAD and IESE business schools share insights that can guide your decision-making process. Badih and Krishnendu provide valuable perspectives on how to make the most informed choice.

Q: Why did you choose IESE business school for your MBA?

A: “I made my choices based on a combination of factors that resonated with my goals and aspirations. Firstly, student feedback played a significant role in my decision-making. IESE MBA had consistently positive reviews, indicating student satisfaction with their programs. Moreover, it stood out as one of the first schools where I heard people genuinely praising the academic experience. This intrigued me as I wanted a strong academic foundation alongside practical learning.

The school's emphasis on the case method teaching style intrigued me, allowing for active learning in class. IESE’s location was also particularly appealing since I had limited European exposure. I saw it as a chance to immerse myself in a new culture and gain international experience.

Furthermore, the school had robust networks in the consulting sector, which aligned with my career focus. Speaking with alumni further reinforced my decision as they expressed high levels of satisfaction with the outcomes of their programs. I was confident that the condensed program duration would suit me well. Coming from a data and technology background, I wanted time to grasp business essentials like finance and accounting. The 19-month duration allowed me to balance academics, internships, and full-time work effectively. Ultimately, the combination of strong academics, global exposure, sector-specific networks, and program flexibility made these schools the right fit for me.”~ Krishnendu

Factors to Consider in Business School Selection

When evaluating potential business schools, a multitude of factors come into play. Here's a concise list of 10 essential aspects to consider, as highlighted by our experts:

  1. Student Feedback and Reviews: Look for schools that consistently receive positive feedback from students.

As Krishnendu points out, "Almost everyone I spoke to had really good reviews about the program."

  1. Academic Excellence: Seek out institutions where academic quality is highly regarded. According to Krishnendu, finding schools where people "rave a bit about academics" can be an indicator of a strong program.

  2. Global Exposure: If you're seeking international exposure, choose a school in a location that aligns with your goals.

  3. Sector-Specific Networks: Prioritize schools with robust alumni networks in your desired industry. As Krishnendu noted, having a "pretty good network in the region, especially in the sector" is a significant advantage.

  4. Career Outcomes: Investigate employment rates and the types of companies that hire graduates from the school. Speaking with alumni can provide valuable insights into the outcomes of the program.

  5. Program Flexibility: Consider if the curriculum allows you to tailor your education to your needs. This flexibility is especially important if you come from a different background.

  6. Cultural Fit: Reflect on the school's culture and whether it aligns with your values. Feeling comfortable in your environment is essential.

  7. Duration of Program: Evaluate the program length and structure as per your specific need. As Krishnendu says, “Coming from a data and technology background, I wanted time to grasp business essentials like finance and accounting. The 19-month duration allowed me to balance academics, internships, and full-time work effectively.”

  8. Resources and Facilities: Check if the school offers state-of-the-art facilities and resources to support your learning journey. Having access to such resources can enhance your educational experience.

  9. Financial Aid and Scholarships: Investigate available financial assistance options to manage tuition costs effectively.

Navigating these factors ensures that you choose a business school that aligns with your learning style and career objectives and will aid in making a well-informed choice that aligns with your ambitions and aspirations.

Determining the Right Time for MBA Application Preparation

When it comes to initiating the journey of MBA application preparation, timing plays a pivotal role. Beginning your MBA application process well in advance is crucial for a successful application to be made. Reflecting on this, Krishnendu and Badih offer insights on how early to start the process to ensure thorough research and well-prepared applications. Krishnendu’s insights suggest that a three-month window preceding the application deadline is ideal for reaching out, researching schools, and preparing for the journey ahead. Aspirants would do well to heed this timeframe to ensure comprehensive research, effective networking, and successful application submission.

As Krishnendu elaborates, "I began my internal school research about a quarter before the actual application deadline."

This preliminary groundwork involved compiling a list of potential schools and reaching out to current students for insights.

Given the importance of these interactions, Krishnendu wisely accounted for the students' busy schedules, allowing ample time for responses. “They're people who have been very busy themselves; they would take time to respond.”

As an applicant targeting schools in Europe without a pre-existing network, Krishnendu recognized the value of an extended research period.

"I allotted approximately six months to engage with various schools, connect with different individuals, and gauge career outcomes," he explains.

With a target application deadline in September, he began actively reaching out around March. This strategic approach aligned with schools' interview prep timelines, allowing applicants to grasp the essence of the recruiting cycle and expectations.

Navigating the School Selection Process

The process of choosing the right business school extends beyond a mere decision; it's a comprehensive endeavor that MBA and Beyond terms "Content Gathering." This journey mirrors your identity, aspirations, and life's goals, revealing why embarking on an MBA application is essential. It involves thorough introspection and understanding your desired pivot. Often, candidates aren't certain about the exact path they seek, and this is where the intricate layers of school selection come into play.

To maximize the value of your MBA admission experience, the focus is not only on landing a job but encompasses embracing a community, aligning with the curriculum, and determining your preferred direction. Paridhi, the co-founder at MBA and Beyond, underscores that these aspects delve into whether you resonate with the school's community, whether the curriculum's approach suits your learning style, and whether you desire an academic or practical inclination. Choosing between longer or shorter internships and a one-year or two-year program further shapes your decision-making process.

Before delving into specific schools, answering these fundamental questions is paramount. It forms the bedrock upon which you build your school selection. Engaging with alumni and admissions committees is key in deciphering whether a school truly aligns with your aspirations.

As Krishnendu says,"Student feedback held a lot of weight for me. When everyone raves about a school's program, it's a strong indicator of its quality." It's an intricate process that requires time and effort, all grounded in the answers you seek through an MBA.

In essence, the journey is a two-fold process: first, understanding the questions you aim to answer with an MBA and then embarking on the work of finding the school that resonates with your goals and values. Aspiring candidates are advised to embark on this comprehensive path, acknowledging that choosing a business school is a culmination of self-discovery, alignment, and meticulous research.

Q: What factors led you to choose INSEAD for your MBA journey?

Badih: “My decision-making process involved reverse engineering of my career aspirations and goals. I wanted to relocate to the Middle East, so I weighed options between finance and consulting. Engaging industry experts from the region convinced me of the benefits of a consulting career. This prompted me to assess schools with strong placements in the Middle East. INSEAD MBA stood out as the perfect fit due to its placement track record and my goal alignment. Speaking with alumni and industry contacts, including a trusted connection in Seattle, further solidified my choice. The January intake better suited my career switch plans, emphasizing the value of an internship opportunity. My journey was marked by extensive soul-searching, ensuring my selection was driven by my aspirations and not mere reputation. It's a crucial reminder that choosing a school involves understanding what one aims to achieve, aligning it with the right fit, and embarking on a purposeful journey.”

School Selection Beyond GMAT/GRE Scores

In the realm of MBA applications, it's vital to recognize that a candidate's potential isn't solely defined by their test scores, especially when compared to school averages.

As Paridhi highlighted, “Individuals from overrepresented applicant pools have successfully secured spots in competitive schools even with scores that might seem lower. The key lies in shining through with distinctive attributes that align closely with a school's values and requirements.”

Q: Did you also consider improving your application for dream schools with higher average scores by highlighting qualities like leadership and strengths beyond your GMAT score?

Krishnendu: “While scores are important, they're not the sole determining factor for admission, especially in highly competitive dream schools. These schools are well aware that candidates bring a diverse array of experiences and backgrounds to the table. For instance, someone who has demonstrated a strong commitment to social impact or community service might be unable to dedicate as much time to standardized test preparation. Admissions committees understand that applicants lead real lives with professional and personal commitments. This is particularly true for those applying to European schools a few years into their careers. Schools acknowledge that the application process isn't just about showcasing grades and scores and sharing compelling stories highlighting unique strengths and experiences. So, even if your scores are slightly lower than a dream school's average, your distinctive profile can still stand out through a robust narrative that aligns with the school's values and mission.”

Success Story at MBA and Beyond

At MBA and Beyond, we had a candidate with a GMAT score of 670 who submitted an application to  INSEAD MBA. While this score might fall below the INSEAD MBA average, what truly distinguished this candidate was their exceptional commitment to community service and their valuable contributions to national-level governmental initiatives in India. INSEAD MBA, known for its emphasis on global exposure, recognized that the candidate's hands-on engagement in community projects demonstrated the exact leadership qualities and principles they value in their student body. Through a compelling display of consistent community involvement and an unwavering commitment to societal advancement, the candidate effectively counterbalanced the potential impact of their lower GMAT score.

The wisdom here is to pinpoint your unique brand, position yourself accordingly, and offer narratives that genuinely resonate with your target institution. This example serves as a reminder that an MBA application isn't merely a numbers game. While scores are important, they are only one part of a much larger picture. Schools often seek candidates who can contribute unique perspectives, diverse experiences, and a genuine commitment to their community and the business world. Remember, success isn't solely hinged on scores but on presenting a holistic profile that captures your essence and aligns with the school's ethos.
