HI DarkAssassin,

First off, 710 is a great score! So, do not be devastated OK? I know you are not satisfied but I do think you can improve your score on your next attempt. Also, keep in mind that Q49 is a great quant score ,so you should not be too upset about that either.

Regarding your GMAT score, assuming that you took your official practice exams under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than 710. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves, stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Although I’m unsure of how you prepared, it’s possible that, in your preparation, particularly in verbal, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your preparation, particularly for verbal, probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new quant and verbal materials, so take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses. You also may find my article with more information regarding
how to score a 700+ on the GMAT helpful.

Hi All,

I’ve been preparing for the GMAT for a few months now and have given earlier in 2015 where I got a 730 (Q50, V39)

Since that score has expired and I’m applying to business schools this year, planned to retake it. Prep was going by smoothly both on quant and verbal and I got some extra prep time with then pandemic and I decided not to give the test online with the online whiteboard. Recently centres opened up where I am so gave the test today.

Had a completely horrible test day experience where I got 710 (Q49 V37) - my lowest ever score. I cancelled my score. When I took my first official mock in February with zero prep I got a 710. This is 20 points lower than what I scored 5 years back - and then I had prepared only for a month.

I’m completely shocked at this score. My last 2 mocks this week have been 770 (Q51, V42) and 760 (Q51, V41) and the last 4 mocks before that have been twice 770 (Q50 V44) and once 760 (Q50, V42) with the exception of one mock where I got 730 (Q50, V38), which was an anomaly in verbal I felt.

In the last few mocks i consistently only got 0-2 questions wrong in quant. In verbal I used to 0-2 questions wrong in CR and RC and a few in SC. In the best mocks I’ve gotten only 4-6 questions wrong in verbal. I was completely confident of my verbal skills especially in CR and RC and in SC - while a few tough ones always had me guessing, have had an accuracy of 85%+.

Given the history above, I was optimistic of getting a 750+ score and was hoping for a good verbal day that would inch my score to 44+. I ended up with a devastating 710 (Q49 V37). This is my lowest score in both quant and verbal. To top it off, i got IR5, which is also my lowest (always got 7-8 in all mocks so far).

I am completely devastated. In the test centre I had to wear a mask and gloves (optional but recommended) so maybe that affected it a little. I also was really conscious of not making mistakes in the quant section in first 10 questions which led to me losing time. However I thought my practice in verbal would be a pillar and I could still salvage the test. However I ended up getting a 37 in verbal, which is my lowest. I can’t figure this one out.

In my cohort of applicants, I need a 740+ to even be considered by top 5 bschools that I’m aspiring for. I’ve exhausted almost all OG and all the mocks given I’ve been prepping for 4 months now. I’m completely lost as to how to recoup and retake this exam. Want to give it again in 1-2 weeks so I have momentum.

Any advice will be tremendously helpful.

Happened with me as well. Bad days do occur. You should retake.
