710 GMAT Profile Eval, do I retake?

I am a 29 year old Finance Professional and Entrepreneur from India, with experience in the rural and social sector.

I have a 710 on my GMAT with a Q44 V44 split.

I have a Undergraduate Degree from the University of Madras and have completed my Chartered Accountancy.

My target schools are Tuck, Ross and Duke, and my safety schools are UNC-KF, Drucker School of Management and Vanderbilt Owen.

As a re-applicant, would it be advisable to retake the GMAT?

Hi Aanand

While a 710 could work, a higher score will help for your target schools, given you are a reapplicant. There seems to be some scope for you to improve on the GMAT given that you have Q44 (if you can increase that to say a Q49 V44 it will translate to a 760).

Yes, you should raise that score because you need a quant subscore as close to the 80th percentile as you can get it, and while your overall score is in line with Tuck, Ross, and Duke as an Indian male you are competing with applicants who typically beat their target schools' median GMAT. That said, given that you an accountant your 710 should be enough to get admitted to one or more of UNC-KF, Drucker, and Owen. So, the 710 from India is tough- not impossible for some programs but looking more likely top 15 or lower- but with the right "why" mba and "why" this school you have a shot. I would not say UNC is a safety with a 710. Drucker- most likely safety and possibly Owen too but not UNC. You will have a shot- but you'd also have to shine somewhere else- are you first class with grades? Excellent promotions and at least 4 yrs work? Maybe...

Certainly your odds go up with a little bit higher score and in your case it is the quant you want to boost a bit more.

Thanks for sharing.

As a re-applicant, evaluate how your profile has improved from the last time you submitted the application. If it hasn't, then you would need to work on improving the execution of showing your motivations and fit. Retaking the GMAT and improving your scores here is also one way of improving your profile and distinguishing yourself.
