730 (Q48, V41, IR 4, AWA 5) - Should I retake?

Question

Hi all,

This monday I scored a fantastic 730 (Q48 V41) in the GMAT (I am super happy for it, and I will post a debrief on the following days) but my Integrated Reasoning was 4 (it dropped from a score of 6 in the last attempt).

To give some background, I have been studying hard for last 4 months or so, and I think I have exhausted all the materials (to be honest, I did not pay a lot of attention to both IR and AWA).

My target schools are LBS, INSEAD, IESE and HEC. I know the IR is not weighted as much as the overall score Q/V, but what do you guys think? Is my GMAT a red flag in those programs? Or since I am above the median and average score, should I be confident with it?

I do not see myself doing again the GMAT just to score 3/4 points more in the IR (however, I am confident I could do that since my average in mocks was 6/7).

Hi EchizenHS,

First off, a 730/Q48 is an outstanding Score - and with it, you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. Many Business Schools have publicly stated that they do not use an applicant's IR score when evaluating an application, so you likely have nothing to be concerned about. However, if you're interested in what a specific School/Program thinks about the IR score, then you should research that School directly (you might also consider contacting the School to ask). Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

Consider casually reaching out to your intended uni(s) and asking them what their thoughts are. Perhaps some alumni/current students if you can find some, too.

I had a 730 in my first attempt and decided to retake basis the following:

1. If you are from a competitive applicant pool, then every extra point helps - typically staying 30-50 points above the school’s average GMAT helps 
2. If you seek scholarships
3. I knew I could score more basis my mocks

For the schools you have mentioned, your current score seems good. But you really must look into it in conjunction with your profile

730 is a very nice score! Since it beats the averages at your desired schools, I think you should be fine with your IR score. WIth all this said, if you want some further clarity, I’d reach out to the folks in admissions so you can discuss all this in detail.
