I don't understand how this is possible?

I scored about 740 (Q49V41) on May 27th in Exam Pack 1 after studying with Veritas OnDemand so i went ahead and scheduled my exam for this past Saturday (Jun 10th). I took it at a library with essay and IR. As close to exam day experience as possible.

Only time available for the test was at 4pm so the week before the exam i decided to take 2 Veritas Cats after work around 4-5pm so I can focus on my stamina. I scored 680(Q46V37) on the first one and 660(Q46V35) on the second one but attributed this to the fact that i was tired after work and that it was a 3rd party exam.

On the exam day I was ridiculously stressed but managed to calm myself down and decided to take 2 redbulls (bad idea, my heart was beating fast in the Verbal section but i still managed to focus on the exam and not get distracted) and a chocolate with me to consume during the breaks. I felt very confident but I scored 680(Q48V35).

I don't know what to do now. My target score is 730 and idk wether the gmatPrep score was a fluke or other factors affected my score.

I am sorry that the things did not work out the way you wanted. What were your scores in rest of the GMAT Prep tests.
Also, I would be able to help more if you can answer the following questions:

1. Did you complete the OG books?
2. What preparatory course/book did you follow?
3. Did you take any break in the CAT that you appeared for?
4. Did you see some questions in the test that you have already attempted?

1. Yes I have
2. I have finished Kaplan Gmat, Manhattan GMAT strategy books (13 of them), Veritas OnDemand online course
3. Yes. I took brakes and did the AWA and IR section. I tried to make my practice tests as similar to test day as possible. (During the test I unfortunately decided to eat a bar of chocolate and 2 redbulls during brakes which i haven't done before)
4. I think AWA was the same as the last time i took the Gmat. 1 or 2 questions seemed very similar to the Veritas ones but the rest was new

Your actual test score was very similar to your Veritas test score. Exhaustion might not have worked in your favour during the Veritas tests but on similar lines, anxiety plays a big role in the actual test.
Plus, it is possible that your GMAT prep test score was inflated because of familiarity with the question types. Often, you come across official questions on the forum and hence, when facing those in the test environment, you are automatically more at ease and your mind works faster. You may or may not realise this during the test.

I suggest you to evaluate your pain points, work on those and take some more practice tests. Once you consistently start scoring 740-750 in them, retake.

Hi

It Happen sometime when you perform very good at Mock exams but bad in the real thing
it is due many factors, like the difference between the two environments
Sometimes test center are so embarrassing or noisy, you get distracted
the time at which you take the test is also much important

But Dont worry things nor repeats always
put some extra effort increase your stamina, as your Mock exam suggests nothing wrong with you
concept building on the GMAT
Calm Down yourself during the test, Catch up your stress, dont get anxious
Take test at the time your efficiency is 100/100
Take some more tests to strengthen your stamina
Eat good diet, as not as 2 red bull ... :-)
Wishing you best of luck for the second attempt

Good Luck
Cheers :)

Hi nijat12,

First of all congratulations on your score. A 680 is a phenomenal score. I think you will be able to make it to all the business schools on your list provided you focus on and present a strong application. Try to make your application as strong as possible. If, however you feel comfortable giving another attempt, you have a good enough time between now and your application to improve your score. Practice tests while should be taken into consideration, are not perfect indicators of actual testing performance. I am sure you can achieve your dream score with a little more hard work.

You should put more efforts on verbal than on Quant . As for verbal, if you are looking for some great practice, try out the e-gmat Scholaranium. The e-gmat Scholaranium is one of the best verbal practice tools in the market. You can easily track your progress in that you can identify your strengths and analyze and improve on your weak areas. Further to improve your score, taking multiple mocks might help. Apart from the GMATPREP, Manhattan GMAT tests and Veritas Prep Tests in my experience have a good verbal and Quant section and will certainly help you point out and improve your weak areas.

Hope this helps. All the best.

Dude the same thing happened to me! I scored 700+ on my exam packs and scored 680 on the actual exam.... I also drank a red bull before the verbal and completely bombed it.... I was also very stressed with work the week prior to the test.... So i think people should avoid drinking red bull completely because instead of helping you focus it completely kills your concentration levels....

I am going to write again without all the stress and red bull and see how things go.

In my opinion, a drink wouldn't make or break your test score. But, to ensure that you know how any food/drink reacts with your body, it is essential for you to take a few practice tests exactly the way you intend to take the actual test. For some people, the red bull might give that jolt of energy they need, for others, it might kill their concentration. For some coffee kicks it up a notch, for others, coffee makes them run to the loo. To ensure that these small irritants don't mess up your mind during the test, ensure that you know exactly what works for you.
