A road declines 30° from horizontal over a distance of 60 feet, as measured by a tape on the road's surface. At the base of the incline is a hole 7 feet deep. What is the difference in elevation between the top of the incline and the bottom of the hole?

A. 126
B. 37
C. 23
D. \(7 + 60\sqrt{3}\)
E. \(7 + 30\sqrt{3}\)

Given: A road declines 30° from horizontal over a distance of 60 feet, as measured by a tape on the road's surface. At the base of the incline is a hole 7 feet deep.

Asked: What is the difference in elevation between the top of the incline and the bottom of the hole?

Let the elevation of top of the incline be x
sin 30 = 1/2 = x/60
x = 30 ft

Different in elevation between the top of the incline and the bottom of the hole = +30 - (-7) = 37 ft

I hope this image illustration helps. Note that the road was originally horizontal before it declined by 30 degrees with respect to the horizontal. And at the base of the 60ft decline is a hole which is 7ft deep. We are to find the change in elevation from the top of the incline to the bottom of the hole.
