IMO it is between C and D, and the correct answer should be D

(A) Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.

This option is incorrect as the hills were not dug; copper mines were.

(B) Dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with many hundreds of copper mines.

Same problem as in A

(C) Hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, are dotting the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona.

This one is good, but present continuous seems to be off here. Eliminate.

(D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.

In this option, 'them' could potentially be a problem, but the closest plural noun here is 'mines', and there seems to be no ambiguity that 'them' refers to 'mines'.

(E) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of which aredug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.

'are dug' is incorrect because it happened a century ago.

(A) Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.
This sentence is grammatically incorrect because it lacks a clear subject in the first clause

(B) Dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with many hundreds of copper mines.
The placement of the phrase "dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago" at the beginning of the sentence is slightly confusing.

(C) Hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, are dotting the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona.
The use of 'are dotting' is wrong here

(D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
This is correct

(E) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of which are dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
"are dug" should be "were dug" to correctly use the past tense.

Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.

(A) Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.

The modifier "many of them dug" should modify "copper mines". Here, it's modifying "hills". Why do you want to dig hills when you have copper mines around :dontknow: Eliminate A.

(B) Dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with many hundreds of copper mines.

Option B faces the same issue as in A.

(C) Hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, are dotting the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona.

In option C, it seems Copper mines performing the action of dotting the hills. Instead, the hills are dotted with 100s of mines. Moreover, the action of dotting may or may not be happening at this very moment so present continuous is not required. Eliminate Option C.

(D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.

Perfect. "Cu mines" is next to "most of them dug" , "Arizona" is next to "The hills to the east of Death Valley". Moreover, the sentence makes sense i.e. the hills are dotted with 100s of Cu mines.

(E) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of which aredug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.

Run on error. "Most of which are..." We don't need verb "are" as it creates run on error. 2 independent sentences can't be placed together with just "comma". Eliminate Option E.

Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.

its clear the sentence is talking about the copper mines which have been dug during a certain era. In the sentence's current state, "them" can also refer to hills. same goes for option B. both option A and B do not eliminate the ambiguity regarding THEM pronoun. So, if we find a better option we can drop these 2.

Option C eliminates the ambiguity and correctly points to the mines dotting along the hills. So we hold on to C, and we eliminate A and B

Option D is as good as option C except that in option D, them might refer to hills, since its the nouns preceding mines. This is not wrong per se but we have a better choice with option C as all ambiguity is eliminated. So, we eliminate D and hold on to C

Option E uses "are dug" which is present perfect tense. The mines are still not being dug, so eliminate E

Therefore answer is C

(A) Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.
- the phrase "Many of them" could refer to the hills, the copper mines, or the people who dug the mines.

(B) Dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with many hundreds of copper mines.
- the phrase "Many of them" could refer to the hills, the copper mines, or the people who dug the mines.

(C) Hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, are dotting the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona.
- Incorrect usage of "are dotting". It is in the present tense, but the phrase "during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago" is in the past tense.

(D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
- Correct!

(E) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of which are dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
- The phrase "most of which are dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago" is awkward and grammatically incorrect. Also, "are" is incorrect tense form.

(A) Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.
This states that the hills were dug, and not the mines. Hills cannot logically be dug.

(B) Dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with many hundreds of copper mines.
Same issue as A and, "with many hundreds" is wordy and a better alternative is "with hundreds."

(C) Hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, are dotting the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona.
Removing the subordinate clause one is left with "Hundreds of copper mines are dotting the hills..." This does not make sense. It would be better to say that the hills are dotted with.

(D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
Clear, concise and corrects the initial errors.

(E) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of which aredug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
There is an issue with tense in: "most of which are dug". "Are" cannot be used as this is something that occurred in the past.

(A) Many of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines.

Incorrect placement of modifier. The hills were not dug during Greenwood copper boom.

(B) Dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with many hundreds of copper mines.

Incorrect placement of modifier. The hills were not dug during Greenwood copper boom.

(C) Hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, are dotting the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona.

The use of present continuous tense gives a meaning that the copper mines are dotting the hills as we speak. Illogical.

(D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.

Correct. The modifiers are placed correctly and the meaning is clear.

(E) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of which aredug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.

Run on sentence. Two Independent clauses are connected via a comma. Eliminate

A & B are out due to incorrect reference of the modifier to the hills.

C is out because of usage of present continuous tense.

E out due to usage of simple present tense while presenting a case of century ago.

D is correct.

(B) Dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with many hundreds of copper mines
Dug here modifies the hills rather than copper mines
(C) Hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago, are dotting the hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona.
Them here refer to mines but the active voice change the meaning of the sentence as if mines are dotting the hills rather than hills are dotted (meaning marked) with
mines
(D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
Answer. Them here refer to closest noun mines and refer to the action being dug done during a century ago and seems correct
(E) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of which aredug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.
Here it seems there are two sentences which are connected by comma rather than a FANBOYS conjunction. Hence it seems incorrect

The correct response is, (D) The hills to the east of Death Valley, Arizona, are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, most of them dug during the Greenwood copper boom a century ago.

This sentence correctly communicates the intended meaning of this sentence. It has a logical flow, as it is clear that it is the hills that are dotted with hundreds of copper mines, and that most of these copper mines were dug during the boom. It leaves no room for confusion about whether the hills or the mines were dug. This sentence is also equipped with all of the proper modifiers and tenses.
