Plant oils do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912.

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
Incorrect. It needs to refer to 'an attempt' but here it refers to 'a new attempt to replace fossil fuels' which is incorrect as we can't say that the attempt made by Rudolf diesel was new.

(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one
Incorrect. here the same one seems to be referring to 'an attempt' that was already mentioned earlier. But no such attempt is mentioned and thus this usage is incorrect.

(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
Correct. This sentence properly uses the idiom Not A, But B. Also the use of one to refer to 'an attempt' is correct.

(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
Incorrect. This choice changes the meaning and suggests that the plant oils are itself an attempt and they were made by Rudolf Diesel. This choice is thus incorrect.

(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
Incorrect. It needs to refer to 'an attempt' but here it refers to 'a new attempt to replace fossil fuels' which is incorrect as we can't say that the attempt made by Rudolf diesel was new.

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it (it is singular and is referring to plant oils which is plural)
(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one (The same one can refer to both plant oils or fossil fuels. Hence the meaning is not clear.)
(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that (Meaning issue. The meaning conveyed by this statement is that plant oils represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels but plant oils represent one that was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912. The plant oils can't represent the one that was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912.)
(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that (Correct. Meaning conveyed is clear. Plant oils are not a new attempt but the attempt was already made by Rudolf Diesel)
(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it (Same as A)

Option A - though the use of semicolon is right (to join two independent clauses), the pronoun IT refers to fossil fuels and messes up the meaning. So Eliminate A
Also, option E suffers from same pronoun issue. So Eliminate E too.
Option B uses "the same one" post semicolon. This does raise some ambiguity about which ONE it refers to. So Eliminate B.

Option C is perfectly fine. Going by the sentence construction, THAT refers to the attempt since the first of the sentence is formed in a way that the attempt is the one to be modified.

Option D messes with the meaning relatively by dropping the word represent.

So the answer si option C.

My Answer: C

Option A: It is not clear what it is referring to.
Option B: This presents a meaning issue. Plant oils themselves are not an attempt. They represent an attempt.
Option C: This seems correct. represent is used. but one that clearly refers to attempt.
Option D: Same as B.
Option E: Same as A. Also not new as an attempt seems to be idiomatically incorrect.

Plant oils do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912.

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
Incorrect: 'it' cannot refer to anything before the ; as all of the nouns are plural

(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one
Correct

(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
'represent not' doesn't make sense

(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
Now I'm wondering if this was the correct answer...

(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
Again wrong use of 'it'

Original Sentence:
Plant oils do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912.

Let's evaluate each option below:

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
* The use of "it" at the end of the semicolon seems to be a bit vague and unclear. "It" doesn't have a clear antecedent, so it's not clear what "it" refers to.
(eliminate)

(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one
* The phrase "the same one" is awkward. We don't know what 'the same one' refers to.
(eliminate)

(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
* "Represent" sounds a bit awkward.
(let's keep it for now)

(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
* It seems that there are no grammatical errors.
(let's keep it)

(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
* The phrase "are not new as an attempt" is awkward and unclear.
* the pronoun "it" after the semicolon sounds awkward.
(eliminate)

Between C and D, D seems to be a better option and is more concise.
I will go with D.

Notice the subject-verb agreement
"plant oils" is plural, while "was" is singular> Therefore, "was" modifies the subject "an attempt"
Also, "plant oils" are not "an attempt" but represent an attempt -> B, D, and E are wrong

A. Correct. This answer conveys the intended meaning. Pronoun "it" also refers to "attempt" without confusion
C. Meaning is confused.

Plant oils do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912.

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one
(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it

One major error in the original underlined phrase is use of pronoun 'it' which is used in the second clause after semicolon.
The sentence is not correct because of a subject-verb disagreement. The subject "Plant oils" is plural, while the pronoun "it" (which acts as a subject in the second clause) is singular. This creates an ambiguity of what is 'it' referring to here? Ideally it should be referring to Plant oils as for using a semicolon, the second clause needs to be an independent clause and using a pronoun to sync the two independent clauses should be synonymous to the main subject in first clause.

However, the intended meaning here is that the idea or the attempt to replace fossil fuels with plant oils was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912. Hence it should refer to the idea or the attempt. Hence the ambiguity.

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
As discussed above it is INCORRECT

(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one
Similar ambiguity as highlighted in option A. Use of 'the same one' is ambiguous here. Also it doesn't make the second clause independent and hence use of semicolon is wrong. INCORRECT

(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
This answer choice correctly uses SV agreement as plant oils is plural and is followed by plural form of verb 'represent'.
Also the word 'but' is a coordinating conjunction that is used to introduce a contrast or opposition between two ideas.
Let's keep this

(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
Here using 'are' is a simple way to state that using plant oils as a replacement for fossil fuels is not a new idea. However it kinds of create an ambiguity when linked with the 'but one that' as the intended meaning here sounds like as if plant oils are the one that were already made by rudolf diesel. INCORRECT

(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
Similar ambiguity as highlighted in option A. Also the first clause changes the intended meaning completely. INCORRECT

Hence option C is the CORRECT choice

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it

This option maintains the original sentence structure but adds a semicolon before "it." However, the use of a semicolon in this context is not appropriate. A semicolon is typically used to separate two closely related independent clauses, but "it" is not a complete sentence on its own.

(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one

This option introduces the phrase "the same one," which is redundant and awkward. The sentence already conveys the idea that plant oils were not a new attempt, so the addition of "the same one" is unnecessary.

(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that

This option changes the verb "do not represent" to "represent not," which is an awkward and less common construction. The use of "but one that" is also unclear and does not fit well in the sentence.

(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that

Option (D) retains the original sentence structure and provides a clear and concise statement. It conveys the intended meaning without any redundancies or awkward phrasing.

(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it

This option adds the word "as," which changes the meaning of the sentence. It suggests that plant oils are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels, but this contradicts the original sentence's meaning, which is that plant oils do not represent a new attempt.

The most effective sentence is D:

IMO C

A) The pronoun it is problematic here. It seems to refer to the attempt, but the correct contrasting meaning is not clear.
B) "the same one" seems to convey the meaning that the attempt made in the present is exacrly the same one that in the past.
C) Correct - This choice conveys clearly the contrast.
D) Plant oils "are an attempt" is nonsensical.
E) Same as A.

Plant oils do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it was already made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912.
the intended meaning is - Plant oils do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels. As the attempt to replace fossil fuels was already made by RD in 1912.

(A) do not represent a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
Correct - It refers to "the attempt to replace fossil fuels". The intended meaning is correctly conveyed in the original sentence
(B) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels; the same one
Incorrect - The first IC conveys that Plant oils are not a new attempt which is illogical in literal sense. Plant oils are not an attempt but they represent an attempt.
Also, in the second IC - the same one implies the same attempt to replace fossil fuels which is incorrect and distorts the meaning.
(C) represent not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
Incorrect - Option C changes the intended meaning though it is grammatically correct. It means that plant oils represent an attempt (though not a new attempt) which was made by Rudolf Diesel in 1912.
(D) are not a new attempt to replace fossil fuels, but one that
incorrect - Option D has the same error as explained for option B and C
(E) are not new as an attempt to replace fossil fuels; it
Incorrect - Option E does not convey the intended meaning properly. Also, Plant oils are not new as an attempt is awkward.
