FROM Babson Admissions Blog: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
As managers, we are asked to do many things – develop employees, create new products, generate revenue, build strong brands. I would argue that one of the most important factors that determines our ability to do all this well is sound decision making.

Why do smart people make bad decisions?  Have you (or your boss) ever made a bad decision? If the answer is no, then this blog post is not for you. But if it’s yes, then you may want to read on.

This spring, we are offering a great opportunity for students interested in getting a firsthand experience of Babson’s Blended Learning MBA program before they apply – they can participate in a Babson Blended Learning: Test It Out course focused on decision making as a core management function.

The course is taught by Senior Lecturer in Management Dwight Gertz and he generously agreed to offer some insight on the class for this blog post:

“Why do smart people make bad decisions?  Have you (or your boss) ever made a bad decision? These are important questions.  The purpose of the Decisions Course is to help you understand why smart, educated people make bad decisions and how you can ensure that you, and the organization where you work, make good decisions.

We will use case studies of good and bad decisions, the writings of some of the best experts on the topic, and frameworks for thinking about decisions to form the basis for a conversation that will help to make you a better decision maker.

The course will meet for two all day sessions in San Francisco and will have one short online virtual meeting.  In the weeks when there is no course meeting, students and the professor will have on line discussions, which you can enter at a time of your choosing.

The course will be graded based on student work on two short papers, participation in class meetings, and participation in online discussions.  There is no final exam for this course.”

Let us know if you are interested in joining the class – here are the steps to learn more and get started.

[Bonus tip: Back in the day when I was an MBA student at Babson, one of Prof. Gertz’s classes was a big highlight of my learning and continues to influence the way I approach my work as my responsibilities grow.]

We all have our own goals. Live yours.

Hi, I submitted my application March 1st, and my recommendation letter has been submitted on March 4th by my boss, and I do got an e-mail from them on the same day saying they got everything for my application. I am just wondering if anyone who apply for R3 has got an interview invite yet or not? My GMAT is 730, with a GPA 3.61/4.00, I really love Babson as working for a start up or running my own start-up company is always my dream! But I think my drawback is I only have 1 full year working experience after graduation from college. I applied to the 2 year MBA for sure, so if anyone heard anything for R3 application, let me know! Thanks so much!

Submitted on 2nd Mar, but according to Babson some documents were missing. Finished the allegedly missing documents by 5th Mar and got the invitation on 7th Mar.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply. Now, I am starting worried a little bit. I think my GMAT 730 should put me into a good shape on the application of this program at Babson. I really love this school, and I feel my drawback probably is my lack of working experience? But I do have a one full year intern in my current company, and then lead to a full time position after my graduation, and my company is a F500 financial service company, although I am working in the middle office at Brokerage Operation. Do you think I should maybe e-mail them to ask what's happened? I visited campus on the last week of February, and still keep in touch with 2 staffs in the admission team. Thanks again for your reply

To be honest, being impatient can display you in bad light with the admissions committee if you email them so soon. Just I and EntMBAforMe have reported received invitations yet. I am sure they will send out a lot more. I think you should wait patiently, at least for next 10-15 days, and call them then.

When I was getting impatient with my other schools I just called them instead of e-mailing. I did not want to leave a proof of my impatience in written

I applied for the 2 year MBA (R2) with a keen interest to specialise in Entrepreneurship. I was interviewed (which according to me went well) within a few weeks of my application but I have been placed on the waitlist. I have followed the suggestions of the admissions and submitted an additional essay expressing my interest in Babson. My GMAT score is 680 with a strong quant (50) and I have two years work-ex in finance and accounts. I have also carried out an independent event management project (3 months) and run a part time business from home.

I really want to get into Babson since it is a perfect fit for me considering my long term goals.

What can I do to convert the wait list into acceptance????

You have already sent them the additional essay, there is nothing more you can do now, unless there is someone in Babson or alumni whom you know and can refer you. For now just hope for the best!

Good luck :)

If you only have 1 year of experience you can always reapply next year. Even if you get a ding, you shouldn't feel bad since it does not mean you're not worthy of a Babson MBA, but simply it means you might want to get more experience before applying to business schools. Hopefully you get accepted though :)
