redskull1 I have worked with many 780 applicants who were dinged from top schools, many of them MBB. Once I reviewed their application materials, it was easy to understand why.

redskull1
Ya. Spot on. I worked in drilling previously. Right now I am in production where we separate oil, gas and water and pump it to refineries, gas plants etc.

All my time I have spent in the field.

Thank you man. Booth is definitely tough. I mean I once saw an 800 get denied. I shouted "COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!" that day at the top of my voice.

I'll pop in and say hello. I am applying for R1 along with Harvard and Wharton. I am delighted that at least Booth matches the HBS recommendation topic, I really hate asking people to write all these different essays for me.

I think I saw that Booth interviews a lot of applicants compared to other schools which I think should go in my favor as I think I interview reasonably well if I were to make it that far.

Definitely looking forward to hitting submit on this application, hopefully it is the last one that I have to do I don't have to revisit with more schools in round 2!

Good luck to everyone else submitting!

Sure.

White male from Western Europe.
GMAT: 780
GPA: Went to UG in my home country (Top 100ish worldwide), GPA was bad probably translates into the low 3's for US. Have a one year graduate degree from a well known US school with 3.8
Work Ex: 4 years in FP&A for a well known F100ish company in the US.
ECs: nothing spectacular compared to what I have seen in example applicants
Passed all 3 CFAs

UG GPA is my biggest issue by far but that doesn't get included into the schools stats as it is not in the US 4.0 scale so hopefully that helps, I also think I have done everything possible to mitigate against it with a good grad school GPA, strong GMAT and passing the CFAs.

I find it tough to tell what my chances are sometimes I am suffering from huge imposter syndrome and others I think I should have a decent shot. Anyway, time will tell!

Hi Marger, yes, the acceptance rate at Booth is more generous than HBS and Wharton, so you have the right idea here.

I just want to say for you and everyone: make decisions about Round 2 applications now. You won't have a decision back from the schools until a week, sometimes two, before Christmas and all the applications for top schools are in the first week of January.

So that makes it impossible if you are busy around the holidays and frankly, I don't think you can scramble together quality applications (researching the school, contact alums and such) in such a short period. Maybe 1 or 2 that are closely related to R1 apps if you have a lot of time off? but its playing with fire.

Keep in mind that interview odds are generally 50/50 and the people who are not selected never predicted that.

Hi again Marger, I sincerely would not trip about your UGPA. You have a 780 GMAT! That negates all sins from college. The GMAT is a better predictor of your classroom performance and trumps the UGPA; low 3's is not a big deal and your masters will help mitigate any concerns about your seriousness. If you have an interesting optional essay story about why the lowish grades maaaybe share it but if it is just like drunk all the time missed class than just say nothing.

The greater concern is quality of work experience, proof of leadership and impact inside and outside the classroom, proof of contribution inside and outside the college campus, proof of problem solving on the job, diversity and international exposure. And of course, communicating who you are in a way that makes you loveable to the adccom.

Marger

Going for three in R1. Yeah I hate asking my recs to give up their time even though they seem happy to do so. Thankfully Booth and HBS have the same questions. Hopefully I don't have to ask them for more in R2!

What schools round 1? Are you calling it quits if you get one of the three?

Going for Harvard, Wharton and Booth. I will definitely take one of them if I get manage to get an offer. My thought process was to submit my top options in round 1 and then if I don't get anything go for more of a spread with a safety in round 2. I would have submitted to Stanford as well but I didn't feel like my application was ready. I am pretty aware that shooting so high in round 1 means there is a very good chance that I don't get in anywhere and have to go again in round 2 but its something that I have already come to terms with if that is what happens.

What about you? How many and which schools for round 1?

I was going to ask about Stanford. Good rationale. Best case scenario you get into all 3, where are you going?

I would recommend selecting R2 schools with a common letter of recommendation now and queuing that up. You wont find out results from R1 until early to mid December and recs are due for top schools the week of New Years. This is usually not an ideal time to ask for support from colleagues who might be vacationing. Everyone should be prepping talking points for recommenders big mistake to just pitch it over the fence and hope for best. BIG mistake. Whenever results are disappointing this is the common denominator, for me.
