How do so many people already get in Fuqua already....? Did you guys have interview? My applyyourself page shows Submitted. But I haven't heard anything from Fuqua for interview or missing documents. I am pretty sure that all the required documents have been sent in already?

This is weird.

1. You need to check your status here - https://applicants.siss.duke.edu/ , not in app.applyyourself. You must have got an email regarding this, if not, there is a problem and you should call Duke immediately.

2. I can safely sy that no one from R2/R3 (whichever had its deadline on 5th Jan) has not been admitted yet. In fact, no one has even received an interview invitation. Duke's admission process in last few years as observed by me is a testimonial that they do not issue invites and decisions on rolling basis but on the fixed date.

3. If you can log in the link i gave above, and see the status as 'Application Received' or 'Application Complete', you have nothing to worry about. On the other hand, if you see 'Application Incomplete' you need to follow up and submit the required documents

Hope that was helpful :-D

Hi everyone, now that the Class of 2017 application cycle is one round from being over, I know many of you are debating between offers or just want to learn more about the Fuqua MBA. I'm a current second year MBA student at Duke and maintain a blog that focuses primarily on my MBA experience.

I'd like to "crowdsource" topics for future blog posts from readers of this thread.

I've had readers request I write about some topics in the past, and find that they are more relevant to what readers want to read about. I'd like to open this up to everyone who is reading this thread. I'm graduating in a couple of months, so now is a good time to reflect on what you all want to learn about the experience. You can find my blog here to see what topics have been covered in the past.

Please shoot me a PM and I would be happy to find out what you're curious to learn about the Duke MBA.

FROM Fuqua Current Student Blogs: I Chose Fuqua: How the Minority Workshop Helped
As an underrepresented minority, choosing a place to invest two years of my life and personal development meant choosing a school that values my unique experience and creates a sense of community around that. When I attended the Duke MBA Workshop for Minority Applicants (Workshop) as a prospective student, I came to the understanding that Fuqua was that place. Though my research on Fuqua had heavily contributed to my desire to apply to the Daytime MBA program, attending the weekend-long Workshop is what sealed my decision. Now as a first-year student at Fuqua, having the opportunity to help facilitate this weekend for the next batch of prospective students has been one of my greatest experiences thus far.

The Experience
The Workshop is put on by the Fuqua Office of Admissions and the Black and Latino MBA Organization (BLMBAO), of which I am a member. It’s BLMBAO’s largest event of the year, and typically has around 80 prospective students, and 50 alumni returning to Fuqua to take part in the programming. The weekend consists of workshops that introduce prospective students to as many aspects of Fuqua as possible through the lens of an underrepresented minority student. Some of the workshops include, a student panel consisting of both first- and second-year Fuqua students, industry-specific career panels, mock classes, and informational sessions with the admissions office. Prospective students planning to apply in that same application year also have an opportunity to conduct their admissions interview during the weekend.

Before attending the Workshop, I had a lot of questions around exactly what business school would entail, and how it would fulfill my career and personal needs. I wanted to understand the class structure, career recruiting, what it means to have a “student-run” program, and exactly how much travel I could fit into two years. Not only did I get all of these questions answered, but I also got to meet other prospective students, alumni, and current students that would be a part of my journey if I did choose Fuqua.

The People

Though there are many informational aspects of the weekend, the thing that most impacted my decision to come to Fuqua was the people. Nothing displays “Team Fuqua” more distinctly than the relationships formed and witnessed during the weekend.

The Prospective Network:

The Workshop was my first visit to a business school to research an MBA program. I was excited to meet the other prospective students and hear some of their opinions of Fuqua and other schools that they had visited. For me, the weekend was a great opportunity to learn from those on a similar journey and provided helpful connections to current students with related career aspirations. Many of the friends that I made during the weekend are now my classmates. Sharing this experience with them—almost a year before the first day of school—gave me a small network of students to communicate with over the summer in preparation to come to Fuqua.

The Current Student Connection:

Before even arriving at Fuqua for the Workshop, you’re assigned a current student buddy who reaches out to you via email to make themselves available for questions or general chats. Having a person who you know will be looking for you in the crowded room at the first event gives you a sense of security and “Team Fuqua” from the beginning. My buddy was an amazing resource, as she connected me with other current students pursuing my desired career path as well as students involved in the school organizations that I wanted to learn more about. The best thing about the buddy relationship is that it doesn’t end after the weekend. When I came back to Fuqua for Blue Devil Weekend, it was my buddy from the Workshop that helped me find my apartment! The current student involvement in the weekend is unmatched and really gives you a sense of the investment the Fuqua community makes so that prospective students feel at home, and understand the nature of the school.

The Alumni Support:

Posing with one of my 2016 classmates as we host the Workshop closing dinner
As I stated, the most impactful aspect of the weekend on my decision to come to Fuqua was the people, but specifically the alumni. When making the decision of which business school was best for me, and worth the investment, Fuqua stood out largely because of the involvement and support of its alumni base. As a prospective student visiting Fuqua, I expected to meet the returning alumni, but never expected to develop such robust relationships. Throughout the weekend, each Fuqua alumnus that I met took significant time to understand why I wanted to be at Fuqua and whether it was a good fit for my assets. They were also eager to talk to me about their current careers, and how to go about starting my own in similar industries. When I left the weekend, I had gained relationships with Fuqua alumni open to making time in their busy schedules to speak with me during my application process, give me advice, and coach me on how to secure a seat in the Fuqua’s next incoming class. I knew that if I received this type of support as a prospective student, that to be a part of this strong dependable network would be worth the investment over a lifetime.

FROM Fuqua Current Student Blogs: Adam Smith and J.B. Fuqua—Champions of the Free Enterprise System
“What effects do the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank interest rate policies have in the developing world?”

“What are the economic consequences of unprecedented monetary expansion to U.S. businesses?”

“What happens when some firms are ‘spared’ at the expense of secured creditors during a financial crisis?”

These are the types of questions the three of us set out to answer when we founded The Adam Smith Society chapter at The Fuqua School of Business in the fall of 2013. As we set out to scale these discussions from the school’s small team rooms to a larger forum, we set three guiding principles: Team Fuqua is paramount; economics is center; and value creation is key.

Our solution was to examine Fuqua’s history and focus on its namesake, J.B. Fuqua, who celebrated free markets on a global stage, partner with an organization that is actively working toward similar ends as he once did, and to create a unique forum where students are able to explore the benefits of free market economics and the links between the economy, government and society.

Team Fuqua is Fuqua, and to stay true to our community we agreed that any initiative we created would be explicitly tied to our school’s culture and heritage.

During the beginning of our second year, we had all read Fuqua: A Memoir, by J.B. Fuqua, and were inspired by the story of our school benefactor building relationships in the midst of the Cold War in order to exclaim the virtues of free markets. J.B.’s mission to cultivate a relationship with Russia predicated on free-market system education, was as visionary as it was successful. And it was his passion and unprecedented success at using philanthropy to create global change that is inspirationally ‘off the charts.’

“… this program [with Russian managers] has been the most satisfactory philanthropy I have ever done.” – J.B. Fuqua

Every time you walk by J.B. Fuqua’s bust in the main Fuqua hall, one can see and read his vision: “Benefactor, advisor, champion of free enterprise and business education, and valued friend whose magnificent generosity and keen vision have contributed to the legacy that is The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University.”

As we celebrate Fuqua’s 25th Anniversary of involvement with Russia, we are reminded that about this time last year we were working to build a system with The Adam Smith Society that is very much a continuation of J.B.’s original mission.

“Capitalism, or the free enterprise system, is often said to produce an unequal distribution of wealth. Frankly, I have been one of the very fortunate. While the wealthy are seldom applauded in this country, without the donations of some very generous people we would be short on educational institutions, churches, museums, hospitals, and many other things that enrich and distinguish our society from those of socialist countries.” – J.B. Fuqua

Economics is the center of the discussion because it is the language that enables one to understand, and more to the point, apply lessons from the likes of Smith and F.A. Hayek, across industries, functions, and situations.

And this is why The Adam Smith Society is so popular at Fuqua: no matter where you came from or where you are heading, the discussion is there to educate, challenge, and inform you.

Value creation is a core tenant for each of us. We strive to create value in everything we do, and this principle is our foundation as well as guidepost, throughout our lives.

Receiving the Best New Chapter award from Paul Singer
The Adam Smith Society was very successful during its first year. We welcomed speakers to campus that included Marilyn Fedak, vice chair emeritus at AllianceBernstein and founder of The Marilyn G. Fedak Capitalism Project, as well as John Stosselof Fox Business Network, and James Copland, director of the Manhattan Institute’s Center for Legal Policy. These were impactful events that encouraged additional dialogue about the free-market approach via Smith’s “invisible hand” methodology, as well as created unique opportunities for people to enjoy one-on-one meaningful discussions with such accomplished people.

As a result, Paul Singer, founder and CEO of hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation & chairman of the Manhattan Institute, presented our team with the “Best New Chapter” award at The Adam Smith Society National Meeting in New York. Subsequently, our club’s success became nationally recognized and we were invited to the SkyBridge Alternatives Conference (SALT) in Las Vegas as members of their “Leaders for Tomorrow” delegation to see, hear, and meet some of the most influential global leaders and thinkers in business, politics, and philanthropy.

As we worked to learn from these rich experiences, one thing was clear: the culture of “Team Fuqua” helped make this happen. None of this could have been possible without listening to the wants and needs of our peers, collaborating with fellow classmates, and leveraging Fuqua’s engaged and supportive faculty.

My application was completed just yesterday. They had extended the deadline to 29th Jan 10 AM ET for furnishing the incomplete documents, so that my application can be considered for round 2. The missing information of my application was a recommendation that was sent yesterday at 10.15 ET. I emailed admissions to check whether I could still be evaluated in round 2, only to get a one-liner reply- "Your application is now complete." I don't know what to make of it. The coldness of the reply did not leave a good vibe. May be they've already made a decision without the second recommendation. Or may be they're just extremely busy as they've been saying in all their emails. Only 4th Feb will tell.

Looking back at the updates from R1 applicants in this thread, Fuqua released interview invites the day before they said they would (19th Nov rather than 20th). Maybe we'll receive news of R2 interviews earlier than Wed... the nerves are killing me!

I'm confused on the timing of when we'll hear - the website says by midnight on February 4th, but would that mean midnight as in 00:00 or 24:00?

Hoping for some good news this week!

Not sure... hopefully the 4th is an upper limit and we'll hear back sooner!

For those wondering about interview invites, in R1, all interview invitations were sent by email ("an application update has been posted" or something like that) about 2 days before the deadline on the website (in this case the deadline is Feb. 4 I think). They were sent all at once around ~1 p.m. EST. Waitlists/Dings were NOT sent until the final decision date. R1 was a bit weird because it also had the open interview period, and some people got "not invited to interview" after they had open-interviewed, which drove some people crazy.

that magical "1 pm two days before deadline" is approaching, anyone checking their SISS lol?

Hi All -

I may be a little late to the punch on this, but is it appropriate to ask the scholarship committee to reconsider your scholarship status on the basis of offers received from other schools? If so, what is the protocol for this? I'm very interested in Fuqua but am trying to decide between Fuqua and 2 other schools, one of which did not offer any scholarship money (like Fuqua), the other of which did (1/3 tuition). Thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

i think it will be different in terms of which school you have been accepted.
what are other 2 schools that you got scholarship?
